Well I hated the Youngstown State defeat too. I absolutely loathed the loss that should had never happened to the best team in the nation. But then, I see it as an unfortunate blip. Yes, the social scene in Michigan most probably could see sport, particularly football dominating the whole college, but I just do not feel that it’s the main reason why people come to Michigan (at least for me). It could be past achievements, top-notch faculty, blah blah.

I am concerned with Michigan’s economic conditions. Without a strong Detroit (and auto industry), almost everything in Michigan will have to go through funding cuts, which most likely compromises effectiveness of Michigan’s good programs. But I have great confidence that with the current administration, perhaps I can see the light at the end of the tunnel — finally, there could be a revolution, a restructuring in the automative industry that really reshapes it, and eventually, reshape the great state of Michigan.

Michigan has top-notch engineering programs thanks to its approximity to Southeast Michigan, the famous automotive powerhouse. Then its social sciences programs are also well recognized, for its public good.

I sound ignorant and naive because I love Michigan, not only as the most successful college football program in the nation, but also as the one-time most successful public college ranked #8 in the nation, comparable to the Ivies, as late as 12 years ago. Michigan improved, and its endowment fund has also increased, but the growth of other colleges is even more rapid. Nevertheless, in my state of mind, Michigan is always ‘the best in the (public colleges)’ and will always be - just that for now, somehow, it has little ability offer solutions to really improve the whole ‘depressed’ state in general.

While there are quite a few social sciences programs that are excellent on their own, like those of Stanford, Chicago, Princeton, Rice, Texas… We try to make good essays to clearly state why Michigan is so distinctive that you want to go. Not just ‘Go Blue’, not just ‘Best of the West’, but I am seeking and I am still seeking the distinctive spark that makes UM-Ann Arbor special.

I have not yet applied to UM-Ann Arbor (I am actually a freshman in a college/university based in the United Kingdom), but I am here because I am definitely interested in UM-Ann Arbor, despite my deepest concerns for its future as the best public college for the public’s mission.
