Trouble writing essay: What's unique about U michigan ann arbor?

Describe the unique qualities that attract you to the specific undergraduate College or School (including preferred admission and dual degree programs) to which you are applying at the University of Michigan. How would that curriculum support your interests? (500 words maximum)

This is the supplementary essay for u-m. What would be a uniqueness or strong part of u-m that i might write about??

Why do you think you want to go there? What attracts you? That is what you should write about. If you don’t know anything about the school start. Start learning about the school and you may find something that you can write about.

Have you visited? And what is your intended major?

i’m gonna take economics. Unfortunately, i wasn’t able to visit the school. I don’t live in the US

I see.

The unique thing about UM is really making use of limited opportunities given by the Michigan state government to create value for the state and even the nation. This pertains to your choice of major… How to make the most out of a state government that really has its hands tied on the underperforming auto industry?

ruennsheng: you’re really off base –

The UMich has (along with the other public universities in Michigan) seen some of its state support diminished (but so has practically every other public institution in the USA). But it’s done fine. To contrive some essay about how poor old UMich is surviving while the auto industry has decimated the surrounding state and state government – would sound extremely trite and banal. I live in MI and the UMich doesn’t reflect that sort of attitude whatsoever. If I read that as an essay from an international student, I’d say “He doesn’t know what he’s talking about”

For the Int’l student who hasn’t visited, I’d focus on how UM continues to attract some of the best and brightest from the USA and from tons of other countries. It’s an amazing gathering of cultures and people. It has world class resources that attract top international science students and kids from the heartland of the USA who want the “Big Ten” school experience. A very nice combination.

Heard their psych is really good.

That’s because UM is living off its endowment… and thriving with the building of the funds that UM is given.

And yes, UM’s Social Science is generally good… :D

ruennsheng: my taxes support the running of the Umich and about 13 other state universities. You’re mistaken about UM’s operating costs’ source. But feel free to put whatever you wish about how UM is being run.

You’re rather confident about UMich being there in Singapore, I would say.

I read between the lines that you at least worry for the financial state of the state of Michigan as well as being ok in what UM is run…

Yes, Singapore has a lot of Michigan students, but most attend Engineering courses there.

Michigan is unique because almost everything it does, it’s the best…

I hope Michigan will keep it this way.

I shall never forget, though, that Michigan was ranked #8 nationally 12 years ago. Now?

Well if you say I do not know about Michigan, I wish I am even more ignorant enough to not care about the precarious condition of Michigan esp. UM-Ann Arbor. How can they keep fulfilling its social mission for the state?

How can they continue to fulfill its social mission for the state? Like the other public instate colleges, it offers an affordable (relatively) and fantastic education for MI high school seniors.

As for my connection w/UM, I grew up in MI, applied and was accepted at UM (did not attend), after college I worked there, bought my first house in Ann Arbor and my youngest daughter was born there. I still live in MI and thus, am aware of its stature in our state and elsewhere – as well as its overall financial health. Oh, I enjoy going to football games there too.

It’s not in decline despite the depressed economic state of the state. I recruit for another top college and our biggest competition for great applicants is the UMich.

Good luck with your application to UMich.

T26E4, thanks for sharing some of your thoughts about Michigan. You sound like a true football fan, having endured the Youngstown State game a couple of years back and still saying you enjoy going to football games there… I would love to attend a football game at the Big House… hopefully if my son gets accepted there, I will some day.

My son loved the 3 campuses and how the picturesque town of Ann Arbor seemed to be an extension of the campus. As a prospective Engineering student at Lurie, he loved the amazing facilities that are located on North campus. He loved the unique array of buildings all throughout main campus, and how each of the 3 campuses seem to have there own identity and purpose and made this big school seem somewhat smaller in size.

The last two games I went to were Youngstown State and Toledo – the first time UM ever lost to a MAC team. I’m Jonah. I think if they saw me coming to another game, security would shoot me! LOL

Ann Arbor is a great town. You’d love visiting a child/student there.

Well I hated the Youngstown State defeat too. I absolutely loathed the loss that should had never happened to the best team in the nation. But then, I see it as an unfortunate blip. Yes, the social scene in Michigan most probably could see sport, particularly football dominating the whole college, but I just do not feel that it’s the main reason why people come to Michigan (at least for me). It could be past achievements, top-notch faculty, blah blah.

I am concerned with Michigan’s economic conditions. Without a strong Detroit (and auto industry), almost everything in Michigan will have to go through funding cuts, which most likely compromises effectiveness of Michigan’s good programs. But I have great confidence that with the current administration, perhaps I can see the light at the end of the tunnel — finally, there could be a revolution, a restructuring in the automative industry that really reshapes it, and eventually, reshape the great state of Michigan.

Michigan has top-notch engineering programs thanks to its approximity to Southeast Michigan, the famous automotive powerhouse. Then its social sciences programs are also well recognized, for its public good.

I sound ignorant and naive because I love Michigan, not only as the most successful college football program in the nation, but also as the one-time most successful public college ranked #8 in the nation, comparable to the Ivies, as late as 12 years ago. Michigan improved, and its endowment fund has also increased, but the growth of other colleges is even more rapid. Nevertheless, in my state of mind, Michigan is always ‘the best in the (public colleges)’ and will always be - just that for now, somehow, it has little ability offer solutions to really improve the whole ‘depressed’ state in general.

While there are quite a few social sciences programs that are excellent on their own, like those of Stanford, Chicago, Princeton, Rice, Texas… We try to make good essays to clearly state why Michigan is so distinctive that you want to go. Not just ‘Go Blue’, not just ‘Best of the West’, but I am seeking and I am still seeking the distinctive spark that makes UM-Ann Arbor special.

I have not yet applied to UM-Ann Arbor (I am actually a freshman in a college/university based in the United Kingdom), but I am here because I am definitely interested in UM-Ann Arbor, despite my deepest concerns for its future as the best public college for the public’s mission.

Everybody would love the town Ann Arbor but I believe anywhere is as good as its supposed ‘weakness’.

ruennsheng: UMich is remaining a great university despite the economy of the state of MI. Everything in the USA has suffered, and MI especially. But NOT the UMICH.

One other thing: You should end your citation of UM football being the best team in the nation: that just screams your lack of knowledge of the current state of UM football. Frankly they are in a drought and unless things turn around this year, the coach will be fired. Best team in America? They aren’t the best college team in the state of Michigan.

They are “most successful” by the sole measure of most wins. They surpassed Yale a few years ago. But this has little relationship to current success.

gamjamaru, if you are interested in economics, UMich has not only got the Economics Dept in the LSA school, but the Ross School of Business which also has an undergrad program. There are so many opportunities at Michigan which has connections and reach all over the world. I think if you are having difficulty with this, you haven’t done your research.

Thank you mhc48 for getting us back on topic. So how specific should I be when writing this then? Like should I mention specific courses, clubs, or professors?

whatever information you have dtothelu (as long as it’s accurate and timely) would be appropriate because it would show that you’ve done your homework and have a sincere interest in UMich, and are not sending the same generalized application to every school.

T26E4, you sound like MSU might be the school you recruit for. I sincerely hope that this past Saturday made it just a tad more difficult for you. The next two weekends will be interesting for both Michigan schools.

hey im oso applying to university of michigan ann arbor- economics too!!! hope to see every of u guys ^^
