dhtmiller and hischoolstudent: I am very sorry to hear that. It must be really disappointing and looking back, it makes my post seem even more ungrateful, which I apologize for. I guess the only answer is that USC’s pool is extremely competitive this year, and that although we didn’t get what we had hoped for, we shouldn’t regret our experiences. USC truly is an amazing univeristy, and we are indeed very luck to experience the ‘wine-and-dine’ of Explorer. I do wish that you and your families the best and am sure that we will all end up where we are meant to be. And like my host said, even if we don’t attend, we’re still Trojans in spirit, so let’s carry that fighting spirit to our next schools, yeah? (:

I’m confused. Do recipients of Trustees/Presidential/Deans scholarship receive a separate mailing of a standard legal-sized envelope in addition to the big fat envelope with the red admissions folder? Is this true for National Merit Presidential Scholarships, too?

Thanks for pointing it out, I guess 1/4 scholarship is better than what most people got. We just wont qualify for financial aid…we fall in the middle, we have a stable business but not enough for two kids in private universities. Does anyone know if my s can get other money??? Town and gown?? any other ideas? He would still love to attend USC. Thanks

I don’t know about Deans, but T/P receive their offers in a regular business envelope. No big package (the students should have already received those in January/February before attending Explorer).

As for NM Presidentials…no clue. Funny enough, that’s not the one I received; I received the regular Presidential.

Mihcal1: There was a group of students admitted in January and invited to come out in February and early March for trustee and presidential interviews. The letters talked about here are for that group. They all got admission in the big red folder in January. I believe, as Madbean said, that scholarship notices for this group come in regular size business envelopes. Those are beginning to arrive for this group today. These are for those that interviewed on campus for trustee or presidential scholarships. NMF, who were not invited to interview are a different group. If they are admitted, accept admittance and attend USC, naming it their first choice with National Merit, they automatically get a presidential 1/2 tuition scholarship (without having to interview) , plus the 1000 a year (or 2500 single payment) from NMF. They are NOT being notified now of that scholarship, so would only get the big red folder, and not a separate letter. But that scholarship will be theirs (yours?) if admitted and name USC as your the first choice school.

Actually, I’m curious. Are the Morks and Stamps scholars supposed to notified this week as well? An earlier post on this thread stated that they are announced next week, and I believe someone last year was notified much later.

dhtmiller - if you completed the FAFSA (and the CSS Profile), you may still be surprised that you could receive some financial aid. All students who complete the FAFSA are offered Federal student loans. We, too are in the ‘middle’ area and I will have three in college next year. If you completed your FAFSA you should have received an EFC (estimated family contribution). When you have more than one in college your EFC is more or less split between them. For example, say this year you only had the one child in college and your EFC was $60,000. Assuming nothing changes in your financial picture other than having two in college, that $60,000 would be $30,000 for child 1, $30,000 for child 2 this next year. If child 1 attends a university that is $30,000 or less you would not be eligible for financial aid for child 1, but if child 2 attends USC (and for sake of ease we’ll say the tuition, room and board is $60,000), you would have financial need of $30,000. USC may meet some (or most or all) of this via loans, grants, work study. So even if your finances haven’t change from last year where you may not have qualified for any aid with one child in college, you may qualify for some this year. BUT you must complete the CSS Profile (for USC and some other private schools) AND the FAFSA.

Regarding Town & Gown and alumni scholarships - the list of other scholarships is on the financial aid website (or admissions) but the deadlines have past I believe for all. they require separate applications. They also changed the policy this year and many of those scholarships that freshman applicants used to be eligible for are now reserved for returning students only. Check this link:

Got the Trustee and will be attending USC this fall. Hope to see some of my fellow CCers come with.

Congrats Stevenf!

Although I interviewed for the Presidential scholarship, I received the Dean’s scholarship. I won’t lie, I’m disappointed. I’m really trying to look at the bright side and remember it’s an honor to be accepted and receive any sort of scholarship, but my decision to attend USC really depended on this scholarship. Now I’ll have to wait to receive my fin aid papers and hope for the best.

For those asking, the Dean’s notification comes in a regular business envelope as well.

I interviewed for Trustee and received Presidential. My interview was good until I bombed one question and my response really shed me in a negative light. I feel a little disappointed, though I would not have attended USC even with the Trustee scholarship.

My envelope also came in a regular business envelope.

"…though I would not have attended USC even with the Trustee scholarship."

Really? Then why did you apply?

For the experience. How many times in your life will you have the opportunity to interview for a full-ride scholarship to one of the best universities in America? My mom is also a USC alum so it was a great way for her to reconnect with the university.

loldanielol: Though I don’t want to judge before I fully understand you, could you please explain what you meant by “I would not be attended USC even with the Trustee scholarship”? As of right now, it sounds almost…offensive, or at least, I’m offended that you applied if you had no intention to attend even with the scholarship.

Sorry, I didn’t mean for it to sound that way. USC was originally on my list but after visiting the campus I decided otherwise.

I’m not even the worst. I met someone who had several other full-ride offers from top schools and still came to Explore. He was collecting full scholarships like baseball cards. Nothing wrong with that, I suppose.

Why would this offend you?

loldanielol: I have nothing against you attending Explorer even if you had other offers from top colleges. “Collecting full scholarships like baseball cards” isn’t the problem as long as the person is sincerely considering the school. However, it’s another thing entirely if one knows that he isn’t going to attend and goes through the process anyway, knowing that he might very well take the scholarship offer from another student. I have nothing against you personally, but I am against what you (and I’m sure some other students) did.

314159265: I am offended for reasons stated above. Maybe it’s not the most accurate term, but I am upset that students who frankly have no desire to attend go through the process and take the offer from other possible recipients–students whose attendance may very well depend on such a scholarship. It would have been another matter entirely if the person didn’t think of attending, attended to get a feel of the school anyway, and ended up liking it enough to consider it.

Yes, there is something wrong with that. Taking up a place and a scholarship that you don’t intend to use is keeping someone else from the spot.

D1 is waiting to hear about a Presidential. We are in Texas so I am thinking that tomorrow would be wishful thinking. I suppose Friday would be the earliest.

I understand the disappointment in those who did not receive that for which they interviewed and wish the best for all.

Any idea when the complete financial aid offer will come out?

I also agree with phuynh94. I know that there are plenty of students, including myself, who would kill for a scholarship. After hearing about several cases where people have been bumped down, I feel less confident but I guess I’ll know by tomorrow :)

teaberry: I’m in your boat…and anxiously awaiting scholarship news on the east coast! I’m hoping for Friday afternoon? maybe? best wishes to everyone, I understand how nerve-wracking this is!
