07/12/09 FALL 09 STERN UNDG.REG.& SVCS.FEE $1,564.50
07/12/09 FALL 09 STUDENT HLTH.INS.PLAN-BASIC $487.00

is anyone else's meal plan repeated twice?

yes mine was. under the “Debits” section mine says
FALL 09 HSG - FALL 14 MEAL PLAN $1,925.00
FALL 09 HSG - FALL 14 MEAL PLAN $1,925.00

exactly.

but on the other column “Credits” where all my FA is deducted, it has the meal plan again and subtracts the extra $1925. I think it was an accident… but I’m not really sure. Try calling Bursar, even though they’re all jerks w/ attitudes pshh.

Right, look for a credit. If you don’t see a subtraction equaling the total of one of the meal plans, call the Bursar–and make sure you have ALL your information and are assertive but polite, because they can be rude but tend not to be if you are prepared and give definitive answers.

If bursar won’t talk to you, have your parents call. Seriously. As a last ditch resort, it helps.

Personally I think that the bursar data could really use some improvement. Each year (well, this is just year 2, but…) I copy and paste into excel the data from each link, e.g., current activity, last bill, etc. Then I sort through it; always seems like some have activity the other doesn’t have. They make it way harder for their customers than it should be. Last year we had SO much + and - of the same things. Then I remove the items that were backed out and get to the essence of what I’m paying for. I make sure the net I come out with agrees with their balance. Then call if you’re still being overbilled. Pays to check.

also don’t forget that they add the health insurance in automatically if you didn’t opt out.

Do you have to opt out each year, sueinphilly?

It all just seems so insanely confusing and difficult… you think they’d make it easy. I mean my original FA award letter came with this paper that had a breakdown of what my aid would be used for. Of course it was just an estimate… but the paper had tuituion, fees, housing, books, transportation, and personal expenses which all added up to my total FA.

But my real bill is nothing like that… personal expenses & books? thats coming out of my own pocket. just odd how they give you x amount of money and tell you what itll be used for, then you get the bill for different expenses, adding up to even more money…

I’m glad I checked the bill, as that health insurance charge was on there. Guess you have to tell them every year to opt out.

Freshman year is the worst for the tuition bill, as they do alot of estimates and there’s numerous charges, reversals, revised charges, etc. It was way better this time around.

yes, you DO have to opt out every year.

[NYU > Student Health Center > About SHC > Student Health Insurance](<a href=“Health and Wellness”>Health and Wellness)
you can do it thru a link here

the other thing they do is ASSUME that you will not receive the full amt of the stafford loan because of withheld fees by the lender. In my case, they credited about $41 less than the full amount. I paid that much less and will leave the ‘balance due’ until the loan is disbursed for the FULL amount because the stafford lender I use doesn’t withhold any fees (not a NYU recommended lender, Discover)

I officially hate the bursar office, but it does pay to check.

I was just wondering if anyone knew when the loans you’ve taken out will be applied, since i’m doing the tuition pay program and wanted to have that taken care of by then. NYU confirmed receipt but the bill hasn’t reflected it, and i know you guys say that the bill will continue to change. I just hope it gets far simpler by the end of this semester.

I think my stafford Lender sends the check on 8/30. There won’t be any problem if you show up for welcome week and the loan $$ haven’t come in. If you didn’t use a HESC lender (we used Discover), then you might have to actually go to the bursar office to sign the check (they will send you an email about this, so be sure to be checking your NYU email even before school starts)

Be prepared for your bill to be almost constantly in flux between now and the beginning of the semester, and even after that.

^ Why? That sucks! I took out a loan for the amount I thought would cover tuition for the whole year. If it fluctuates, I hope it doesn’t go over my estimation! >=|

Come on NYU!

I love the $1,000 registration & services fee btw…

^ yeah for real… what the heck is the $1,089.50 service fee for. probably just another way for nyu to get more money out of us.

@ya-alim:
i’ve been having the same issue. didnt get my PLUS loan so im trying to get a private one and for the last week and a half i dont know how much to get it for! i keep calling nyu bursar & housing & financial aid and telling them how ridiculous it is that I have to wait til the very last minute to get out a loan.

and also… thank god i looked into the health insurance plan because although its about $487 first semester, its $770-ish for 2nd. So thats an extra $300 to consider. How are we supposed to get loans when we dont know how much our bill is now, much less the whole year?! really annoying.

oh and @sueinphilly:
im getting worried about my stafford loans because I signed the promissary notes and everything, but they havent been deducted from my bill yet… and Ive called HESC a million times to make sure everything is ready and confirmed. When will NYU send us a final official bill with exact housing amount and all loans included?

NYU owes me $5220.93

i dont mean to hijack this thread, it’s just it’s another tuition bill question.

will NYU cut my famz a check for this amount? obviously we would just put it towards paying loans, etc.

heyitzerin- Yeah! It’s so annoying! I kept the Student Health Plan but I’ll definitely opt out for next semester. Or I might just opt out for Fall semester too on Monday when I call the Bursar’s office. I HATE calling NYU FA and Bursar now. This one guy isn’t helpful, I think his name is Gary…

In any case, I HOPE my bill doesn’t fluctuate. We’re in the same boat heyitzerin. My private loan hasn’t been approved yet either and I’m FREAKING out! It’s been like 6 days! But NYU FA said that it takes up to 10 days sigh

Oh and don’t worry. I called the Bursar’s office about the deduction based on the additional $4000 Stafford Loan. They said it takes a while for them to update it. Just call FA and make sure they DID get your additional unsubsidized Stafford though, because they checked for me and they did get it. Isn’t this whole process annoying? My summer is being ruined!

stephenn- Yes. NYU will mail you a check back home after August 31 when the disbursements for all your loans will be sent and they deduct how much will cover tuition.

thank you ya-ali :)
