If you qualify for a tuition exemption in Oct, would that change your fin aid package you already got? Also I see the the housing bills are available..how do you pay with finaid or is it automatically taken out of it?

It’s automatically taken out once it pays your tuition bill.

From the financial aid, will they take out the total amount due for housing or just the amount due per semester? I’m a bit confused on how they handle this.

^ They will start deducting from your total bill (8500~ish) until you run out of financial aid. Remember though that most loans and grants are disbursed 1/2 now and 1/2 in the spring. So if your fall part happens to cover more than the fall part of housing, it will start to cover the spring part too.

Wait, so it won’t just pay what you owe for the fall and then give you the rest to pay for books and stuff?

Right. You are technically billed all 8500~ (or w/e it is) in the fall, but you can pay just the fall installment in the fall and wait until the spring to pay the spring installment.

It’s the same amount of money either way. This way you will have to pay less in the spring, so you can just use that to buy your books in the fall.

(also, props for getting so much financial aid. unless it’s loans, then the kinda sucks)

So you can pay half housing bill in fall then other in spring? They wont automatically use all your finaid to cover the whole bill at once?I would like some left over for books and stuff in the fall.

I would like some left over to pay for books as well, which is why I asked. I’m hoping they’ll deduct only the fall installment from the financial aid. I’m not sure how to indicate that’s how I’d like it to be done so I can actually have money left over for the fall semester rather than have more than what I’d need for the spring semester.

Technically you “owe” the whole thing immediately, the university is just nice and lets you pay 1/2 in the fall and 1/2 in the spring (the fall 1/2 is actually larger, it includes taxes and your internet, etc) without any additional interest/TVM charges.

When the school receives financial aid/grants/scholarships/loans in your name, they apply it to your bills first, before disbursing it to you. That’s the point of financial aid, you’re not really supposed to have extra and get cut a chqeue, unless you just took our a loan larger than you really need to. (Or you misreported scholarships, and got scholarships money that the school didn’t know about beforehand so they could adjust your financial aid package correctly.)

Alright, thanks. What you said does make sense,Y2K. I was just asking because the financial aid I got covers a bit more than the tuition and housing. Lol, I didn’t misreport scholarships either.

So then fin aid isnt for purchasing text books also?

Why Two Kay is mainly referring to those people who are staying on-campus. If you are staying off-campus, and, you are receiving financial aid to pay for it- you will get a check or money deposited into your account to pay for your housing on your own. But technically you can use that money on what you want to (books) as long as it has to do with your education at UT. Which they have a whole list online of things that are justifiable uses of financial aid money.

if you are living on-campus & you have fin aid left over after housing & tuition is paid, that money is still supposed to go only on things of an educational purpose…such as books.
