Since the Loyola board is dead...
I know you guys are biased toward Tulane (I am too...:)), but any opinions on Loyola (the one next door) and/or how it compares to Tulane?

Tabbyzmom can tell you more. I have heard they have an excellent music department.

thanks, alongfortheride! Do you know anything about the biology and/or history departments?
Tabbyzmom...have you ever visited Loyola? I heard that the school has a very "Catholic" atmosphere; can you confirm that? Also, I've heard that Tulane's UG reputation has been declining while Loyola's has been rising. Any comment on that statement?
Thanks!

Thanx for the vote of confidence, along~!

These web sites should be helpful:
http://music.loyno.edu/
http://www.tulane.edu/~music/
The music department's web site for the two schools, plus
http://www.uno.edu/~music/ UNO has a strong jazz department

LAgal - I have not at all heard anything negative about Tulane's UG reputation; on the contrary, I hear wonderful things. Loyola and Tulane are quite different; I don't know that much about Loyola, frankly. I know more kids who have gone to Tulane than Loyola, but I think that's because of what they're majoring in. Loyola does not have an engineering school, an architecture school, or a business school of the caliber of A. B. Freeman School of Business at Tulane. Also the pre-med kids I know go to Tulane; although Loyola does have a pre-med program, Tulane has a med school. I have known a few music majors to go to Loyola.
Loyola's majors:
http://www.loyno.edu/counsel.career/employer/progstudy.htm#ba
You can see from accessing that site that Loyola's focuses deal with
College of Arts and Sciences
College of Business Administration
College of Music
Pre-Professional Programs
City College
School of Law
Graduate Degrees of the Colleges

Tulane's majors:
http://www2.tulane.edu/academics_dept.cfm
Tulane has: Architecture | A. B. Freeman School of
Business | Engineering | Law | Liberal Arts and Sciences | Medicine |
Public Health and Tropical Medicine | Social Work | Graduate School |
Newcomb College | Tulane College | University College

I know that Loyola has long been popular with stucents from Latin America and that it has good Music school and performing arts facilites. It is a smaller school than Tulane both in size of student body and physical plant. The two schools quite literally abut each other which is something you don't see too often. Oddly when you do see it they are often odd couples - Washington & Lee - VMI or Naval Academy - St John's. I don't know if that is some kind of law of physics that when schoold abut they must be very different but....

In any case Tulane and Loyola both share a reputation as hard drinking party schools. I think the reputations might be a little overdrawn. I know I have been assured by alumni that even the students at BYU have been known to party hardy when the elders aren't looking and Dandt Don Merridith went to SMU - allegedly the driest place this side of Bob Jones U. Kids like to play up their reputations whether it for wild parties or homely co-eds.

by the way..re "a reputation as hard drinking party schools"....ever heard of LSU??!

LSU - isn't that the place you have to go to if you can't get into Tulane?

thanks, tabbyzmom!
lol, patuxent...i hate LSU! :p
anyone know more about bio and history at the two schools?

...any other opinions?

Perhaps Concerneddad can tell you more about the biology at Tulane. His son is premed.

LAgal, I've always heard excellent reports about the bio at Tulane. The student with whom my S stayed on his overnight visit to Tulane is a bio major planning on med school. He's an excellent student and had his pick of schools. Another friend of my S is a freshman majoring in bio w med school plans; she also was super-intelligent and could have gone anywhere. Also several doctors we know did undergrad and med school at Tulane.

please keep in mind that everyone's post, including mine, about a school is relatively bias.

Many here probably know how i feel about Tulane's Cell and Molecular Biology Department.

As for Loyola, I have haerd from many many students that it is not really strong, aka it's bad. If you have to pick between tulane or loyola and am planning on majoring in cell and molecular biology, pick the lesser of the two evils and go with tulane.

hnbui, i agree completely about the biased posts...
are you a student at tulane? (if you don't mind answering :)) are you majoring in bio? do you have any specific reasons for why tulane's bio beats loyola's bio?
