Tulane vs. Loyola New Orleans

I got into both, but Loyola is giving me more money. I know Tulane is a better school, but how much better?

In terms of academics, a whole lot. And Tulane is much more diverse. Loyola usually draws the in-state crowd.

Professionally though, Loyola has a better music program, and they have journalism and film classes (I think).

In terms of facilities, Loyola students come to events at Tulane, but not the other way around. You're more likely to see Loyola students at the University Center or the gym at Tulane, and the comparisons of the two's dining halls are kinda biased. They're about the same, but the argument is that Tulane's should be way better.

If you plan to (or live) OOS, going to Tulane is a better option.

I am kind of assuming that the 2 schools use the same food company, because you can eat at either place using your Tulane meal plan, and same for Loyola students. Trojan's comments are right on, and the other problem with Loyola (even if this is a bit silly) is that there are a whole bunch of Loyola's out there and so no one ever knows for sure where you went. Tulane is much broader in terms of majors and faculty, has a higher quality student body academically, which I think is one of the keys to a good university experience because you get challenged more, and is more highly thought of around the country.

Also, sometimes high school GPA is used to compare the two, and Loyola's (in past years) were a tad higher. It's hard to say, but you have to remember how Tulane draws the OOS crowd, and that Louisiana schools are pretty behind the national standard...

And with this year's app pool, this might change.

yeah, GPA is a worthless tool unless the applicant pool is of the same basis when it comes to who is doing the grading. Translated: I agree with Trojan, Tulane's applicant pool comes more heavily from Northeast and Midwest schools that generally are more stringent in their standards.

Not complete reciprocity between meal plans fallenchemist, only Tulane wavebucks work at Loyola, not the one swipe=one meal option within the Tulane meal plan.

roamingcooks - OK, they weren't clear about that on the tour. They said you could eat either place. Technically true, just not quite as inclusive as they made it sound. Not a big deal, for sure.

yeah... i'd really rather go to tulane. i just haven't gotten my finaid package yet. i hope they give me enough.

"I know Tulane is a better school, but how much better?"

There's a substantial difference between the two in my opnion. I'm really not even sold on the fact that Loyola is actually better than UNO (university of new orleans)

Tulane is better if you want to work out of state and meet people from across the country and the world.

Loyola is nice if you are from Louisiana. Outside of those borders, not many people will know of it. When I first heard of the school, I immediately thought Chicago and Maryland, but alas, it is next to Tulane.

Also, for future preference, Tulane has a larger alumni network.

“You went to Loyola- in Chicago, right?”

exactly.

Also, Loyola N.O.'s financial aid was pitiful.

I wouldn’t say that one school is neccesarily better than the other; however Loyola is ranked 7th in the southeast while Tulane is ranked 51st. Also, if you attend Loyola, Tulane, or UNO and that school doesn’t have a certain class you would like to take but it is offered but one of the other schools mentioned you may take it on the other school’s campus and receive credit for it.

Tulane students are equally active on Loyola’s campus as Loyola student’s are on Tulane’s.
Also, you may use your Loyola meal plan or Wolfbucks at Tulane just like you are able to use your Tulane meal plan and wavebucks at Loyola.

Loyola’s financial aid package will be lower because the cost of tuition is lower.

The USNWR rankings are in different categories. Loyola is #7 for Regional Universities, South and Tulane is #51 for National Universities. The rankings can’t be directly compared to each other. I have no opinion on the comparison of Tulane and Loyola because I don’t know enough about Loyola, but the USNWR rankings are not going to be helpful to directly compare the schools.

Frankly, I am rather shocked you would dare say such a thing, but I guess being anonymous makes it OK. Come on! Tulane is ranked 51st NATIONALLY, and the only reason it isn’t probably about 10 places higher, if not more, is because they can’t report 6 year graduation rates that make any sense until after next year, when Katrina will be more than 6 years past. FYI, Tulane just reported today that the freshman retention rate is the highest in the school’s history (91.1%) and the retention rate into junior year is a similarly outstanding 85%, also a record. This puts it in the same league as much higher ranked schools. Also, if you went strictly by average SAT scores, Tulane is 29th among national research universities. Gives you an idea regarding the quality of students there. Also, I am not sure where your stat of being ranked 7th in the southeast come from.

Granted “better” is a subjective term. Loyola is obviously better for some students that might need/prefer a particular environment or desires a particular area of study in which Loyola happens to excel. Loyola is a fine school. But overall, looking strictly at academic offerings and quality of the student body, as well as total facilities and national (if not international) reputation, there really is no comparison.

Finally, this is a thread that was over a year old. Pretty odd to revive it just to say what you did.

roamingcrooks- this is not true. You can use the one swipe=one meal thing at loyola. Trust me, I do it 4 days a week, my wavebucks would’ve been long gone by now

Yeah, I think he accidentally got those reversed.

Tulane is a better school. I know there’s a ton of jealous competition between the schools, but Tulane is much better academically.

I’ve heard good things about the music program. They also have a beautiful church.
