The creative process is a mystery indeed! Always good to go with what inspires you most at the moment. I am sending lots of karma your way. Hope you are at Tulane next year.

Thanks so much, fallenchemist! The sheer amount of time you spend on this forum helping people navigate the murky waters of the process and keep our spirits up is definitely appreciated in my little corner.

conflicted as my child has very strong GPA, 31 ACT and a lot of extracurricular activities. Got accepted but surprised as no money. Similar to several strong kids who did get money. Would you still have child attend Tulane?

That depends on how affluent you are. Or put perhaps a better way, what the financial situation would be for you after you see the final aid package, assuming you are going to apply for need based aid.

So if you are wealthy enough or have saved enough that paying about $240,000 over 4 years is comfortable for you, then sure I would consider it. Lots of people can buy the most expensive Lexus available and not give it another thought, but I sure can’t. It is, as they say, all quite relative. If you have very limited resources, there is a good chance you will receive an attractive need-based package that makes it all very affordable. In the “extreme” case, Tulane has a no-loan program, or at least did for this last incoming class. I have no reason to believe it won’t be continued into this cycle, although the details may change.
So your question is a bit impossible to answer without knowing certain facts you probably wouldn’t want to make public, not to mention people have different comfort levels for debt. Personally, I would not have allowed my kids to take on more than about $20-25,000 in total debt for 4 years at a highly regarded school. Some wouldn’t go that high, some might go a little higher. But any more than that and I just don’t think the difference in the education and experience they get at Tulane, extraordinary as I think it is, can be justified. And while students change their minds all the time about their major and career goals, if there is any likelihood of med school, law school, or a grad school that doesn’t cover tuition etc., the level of acceptable debt for the undergraduate education gets even lower. So like I said, not a simple question.

conflictedparent: Ditto what fallenchemist wrote. Additional secondary considerations for me are: child’s career interest (art history or engineering, for example) and the specific programs at the school (for example, if my DD was set on a government/political science major, we would have given American Univ $$$$ more thought). Still, as always, FC really hit the nail on the head.

My younger son was admitted with 31 ACT, 3.95 WGPA and great extracurricular. We also thought he would get some scholarship money. Not a penny. 4 APs . 5 on AP from last year.

He is 3 rd generation, 6 time legacy. His older brother is there so they know we can afford it and will let him go. Turns out working a lot harder than his brother was a waste of his time. He will go but we were very disappointed.

I know you are disappointed, sail33. But I think you also know that hard work in school is never a waste of time. He will get credit for the AP’s, and he will be that much better prepared in general for succeeding at Tulane. Congrats on the admission and best of luck to him.

@Mavitale: My son just got an email today, the first communication since his acceptance letter, asking him to confirm his enrollment through the link in the email if he was ready to do so. So it prompted me to check the link for the admitted student website and there is a page for them to log in and get started.

kreativekat: My DS also told me today he got an email with a link to enroll. We were in the car so I couldn’t check it out. He’s not ready to enroll yet, but I would like to check out the admitted students link.

Bandmom: I wish your DS the best… it could still be Tulane or elsewhere. Whatever FC recommends, I would follow his advice.

I’m in!!! 20,000 a year. I am a bit worried though. I am taking a gap year and deferred admission for a year at Case Western (I absolutely did NOT wanna go, but they were the only school that gave me scholarship last year) and they gave me 22.5k a year. My dad really wants me to go, but it’s not at all a good fit. I was hoping for the founders, so that both schools could be on even ground. I’m really hoping a 2.5k a year discrepancy will not defer my dad from letting me go to Tulane…I’m gathering all the info i can to convince him that Tulane is wayyyy better than Case (though academically, they are pretty closely matched, so it’ll be hard.) I’m scared that the “party school reputation” that tulane holds for some parents who do not watch college admissions as close of many of the parents on here do might really make him wary.

Got the official letter today! No Merit $ but we weren’t really expecting any. We’ll need a huge FA package and/or loans but will do what it takes if this is truly his #1.

Hey everyone!!! the admitted students page launched yesterday. You should have recieved an email with login info. Go here:

Sail33: what do you mean there is no money (not a penny) at all from Tulane? there are ways to finance the school if your kid still wants to go to Tulane. Did you fill out the FAFSA, etc? your FAFSA showing personal net worth in seven figures?..only you can answer those questions. Perhaps, you can call the Fin. Aid office or call the office of admission and find out why there is no money at all…what you gotta lose? it is only a phone call away…

She said scholarship money. That is different from need-based aid. Of course if they qualify there could be need-based aid, I am sure she knows that with having a child at Tulane already and so many others having gone before.

Perhaps there is a mistake somewhere. Therefore, she should make the phone calls and find out what the rasional behind of not getting scholarship money. I am sure they have perfect explaination and of course she still can argue against their opinion. That’s what I would do…and there is nothing wrong with making phone calls to get to the bottom of this.

Tulane Jeff wrote about this in his blog. That should be read before making any calls, IMO.

FallenChemist: thanks for the info. It is very good blog and here is the link for any of you who would like to read it: [Tulane University Admission Blog - Jeff](<a href=“Tulane University Admission Blog - Jeff Schiffman”>Tulane University Admission Blog - Jeff Schiffman)
