Honestly we were told flat out in the information session we went to not to apply ED unless you could afford sticker price (and were willing to pay it). I think that discourages a lot of people who have considerable need. My son is going to Emory which is need blind and meets 100% of need and they encouraged us to apply ED, telling us we would be released if the FA wasn’t where we needed it to be.
That statement - don’t apply ED unless you are full-pay - further demonstrates that Tulane is not need-blind.
I think it is incredibly obnoxious that Tulane pretends to be need-blind with that purposely vague statement on their website. It is intentionally misleading. When I called, the AO was also very sheepish and would not come right out and answer the question. I had to drag it out of him. Not transparent, not consistent with ethical admissions practices.
From the NACAC’s Code of Ethics and Professional Practices: “Colleges must make publicly available accurate, complete, and current information concerning…the factors considered in making admission … decisions, including, but not limited to, students’ financial need.”
They do tell you that your FA isn’t affected by applying ED which I believe. Tulane is notorious for being stingy with merit in ED which is why we wouldn’t have considered it.
Not to put too fine a point on it. But as a private school, why shouldnt they get suckers to go ED and pay full sticker? I mean its a good % of their admits, but can help them subsidize more needy students. Seems like a good system. That is unless everyone they are admitting is some stuck up richie, in which case the system sucks. We got in EA, with good merit scholarship, but didnt go ED because there was NO WAY could take a chance they would full sticker us. Anyhoo.
Of course Tulane can do whatever it wants to get suckers to pay full-price with ED.
What they should not do is lie and confuse people about being “need-blind” when clearly they are not. Just tell the truth! But it appears they want to keep this a dirty little secret. You will see Tulane listed on “need blind” lists all over the internet, which convinces everyone this is the case. Totally false. Of course, Tulane will make no effort to correct that impression. It is unethical.
@4kids4colleges do you have a kid attending? Or do you have one who applied? If so I would wonder why since you seem to have such a bad impression of them.
Good question. I’m hesitant to post about it because no doubt Tulane AOs are lurking here. But we specifically inquired about switching to ED2 after S was deferred EA and were told only that Tulane tries to meet 100% demonstrated need although they do not guarantee it.
This time around, we qualify for FA, and if Tulane’s NPC is correct we could afford it with need-based aid. So we decided ED2 was a good move based on NPC.
Since then, it has become clear that Tulane is not actually need blind as we thought, so now I fully expect a rejection although many (most) get in with similar stats. He could have tried ED2 somewhere else that truly is need blind. So we are disappointed they were not clear about it in the first place.
I’m sorry that stinks. My son will be going to a need blind school that literally met every penny of our need. He did get into Tulane with substantial merit. I hope your son gets in and you get the money you need. Tulane does meet almost 100% of need and they did admit my son knowing he needed aid so hopefully all goes well for you. I really don’t believe that the need aware policy really hurts you unless you’re a bottom 25% appplicant.
Does any one know when Tulane ED2 decisions come out or when they were released in previous years?
I called admissions today. The AO said that ED II decisions will come out by the end of the day monday, 1/14.
@ABroad41 do you think that means they’ll gradually send them out before monday too or that they’ll start sending them out by end of monday?
I think it means all of them will be released on monday. My best guess would be around 4:30 EST because that’s the time they realeased all of the EA decisions when those came out. Don’t know tho.
@ABroad41 hmm okay thanks and best of luck!
you too!
Do you guys know if it’s possible to get waitlisted on ED II after being deferred from EA or is it just a straight yes/no answer?
@collegemom9 Tulane is need-aware. Only the top schools with big endowments like Princeton, Brown etc are need blind

He really liked Tulane because of some unique programs. His sister got deferred 3 years ago as a NMF and eventually got in but didn’t go as she got a full ride scholarship to UF. I wonder if they assume he won’t go because of her?I hope not.
So far he’s been admitted to UT Austin, UCF honors, UGA, and U of Alabama.
I understand that they may feel some kids are going to apply to reach schools, but that doesn’t mean they don’t love Tulane and that it is one of their top choices. You never know what someone will choose. My daughter got into a lot of schools ranked higher than UF like Michigan Berkeley and UVA,and she would have chosen Tulane over those other schools for their program… She loves UF and that was truely where her heart was first. If they assumed she’d go somewhere else, and didn’t admit her because of her top grades etc, she would have been crushed and they would have lost out on a great student. There are a lot more factors at play than just ranking of a school and a student’s grades and scores don’t necessarily determine where they want to go most… In the end, money is a huge factor and that was the deciding factor for my daughter. When a school says you will get PAID to go here, that’s hard to walk away from!! Tulane, South Carolina and Georgia Tech were actually her other top choices and they are all very different from each other.
I know Tulane has a hard time choosing from so many great studetns because of the size of their class. But hopefully in the end his genuine interest will show through and he will get admitted. . .
Gibson has been updated showing the financial numbers, cost of attendance, scholarship, loans, etc.
I’m applying EDII and just checked Gibson out of curiosity and noticed that in my to do list section, the requirement labeled “admission decision pending review” has completely disappeared and now the only thing there is the FAFSA in the done section, does this mean I didnt get in or could it just be a glitch?
Zgreen247 - same here for Gibson. Just says FAFSA is complete.
Goose15 - does your page show your aid and award amounts already. Are you already accepted? Or still waiting for EDII
