I just wrote admissions and here is what the Director of Admissions said. VERY disappointing! “We will be releasing closer to April 1st. We got more applications this year. The published notification date is always April 1st and anything before then is a pleasant surprise”. So looks like it will be next week sometime.
I love how it takes these schools over three months to review your application, but they only give you 4 weeks until your deposit is due!!! That’s fair.
@SwimSwam12 They are trying to manage the yield. They have the majority of the class thru’ ED/EA. Now they managing Yield (Tulane is very low) and financial aid (merit). If I was running admission I will do the same.
anyone know what time decisions came out last year?
So here’s a thought for you - hand-in-hand with managing yield: Is not ED for those student’s whose parents can afford to make a firm commitment without regard for aid? Unless written permission is provided, and hopefully in advance of filing ED, that grants the student the right to withdraw his or her application if needed aid is not provided, how is yield protection not the same as buying a student into a university? With ED, would not many more students from wealthier families attend, as opposed to admission based upon academics irrespective of financial background? Just a thought.
Anyway, good luck to all.
@BabaO I think you are absolutely correct. Where we live I have often heard people refer to ED as a “wealthy man’s game” or other remarks. It hits the hardest for the middle class kids who won’t qualify for a lot of aid but can’t afford full tuition. I can understand how parents won’t allow their kids to do ED at very expensive schools but rather get all the acceptance packages and compare merit and financial aid. I can also see how it benefits schools to have ED. Bottom line is they are a business. And I might add Tulane has some very effective marketing! When did ED even start? I know at Tulane just a few years ago, but at other schools? The whole process has become ridiculous - and here we are square in the middle of it with my daughter! Happily she got into Tulane EA with some merit and is comparing it to another school she loves and got into as well.
@bk1366 If the class is already pretty much full through ED and EA, where do the deferred students stand?
The admissions events for admitted students at Tulane (visiting campus with other admitted students, housing choices etc) seem to be winding down. It sounds like admission through RD is incredibly small.
It seems that it is going to be a long shot to get in through RD. Looking at last years thread was quite deflating. Many Many Many waitlists for kids with incredible stats and very few acceptances. My daughter loves Tulane but even if she does get in, it doesnt seem like we will get a dime and thats just not possible since she has other options. Im not gonna lie, Im feeling a little put off by this whole process. As soon as they emailed about ED2 after her deferral I felt like this wasnt going to work out for her.Its bad enough to have to deal with ED1/EA but adding an ED2 just really makes it that much more difficult for the rd pool. Now having to wait until the very end of March is disappointing. At this point we really need her to make her decision and move on. Good luck to everyone who is waiting
@happytimesforever - There is no rhyme or reason to the admissions process. What works at one university may be a complete failure at another. The process is not transparent, it is frustrating and it teaches our children, as well as reminds us, that life is just not fair. Rule #1, Life is not fair. Rule #2, Don’t forget life is not fair. But for those still waiting on Tulane, and my D applied EA and was deferred to RD - Tulane now simply a university in her rear view mirror - don’t give up. My D specifically applied to Case Western Reserve University RD, and it has an EDI and EDII process, and she was just accepted this past Sunday. So, for all those still waiting on notification, don’t give up and good luck.
so i’m guessing decisions will just start rolling out at some point and the latest release is 4/1?
@pacnwfromne - If I recall the article I read last year, and I could be wrong and confusing it with something else, I believe U Penn was the first to commercially push the ED process in the 1970s because, at the time, students were afraid to attend because Philadelphia was not the safest city (not that it is much better today). In effect, at the time, U. Penn was a laggard to its ivy league peers and going downhill and the ED process was to be its way out of purgatory. Prior to U. Penn, there were some smaller, private schools that used the ED process to snatch students away from Harvard, Yale, Princeton, etc., but I think U. Penn is the university that sealed the deal on the process that made it prevalent throughout the private university domain today. Again, I could be wrong.
@purplecattt I’m not giving up until the fat lady sings. Hopefully decisions will be posted soon. Good luck to you.
@lavendermary haha! true, true! thank you! best of luck to you as well
@SWestMom Deferred students go to the RD pool. It is difficult for the University to manage the yield in RD. So delaying as much as possible provide some idea as who may be interested.
@chenlinong My daughter applied for TPM, but did not receive an interview. She did receive the DHS scholarship and the Service scholarship.
@labmama Did your D receive an interview for TPM?
Good Luck all.
Are admissions going to be released next week then?
i called them earlier today at noonish and they said decisions release april 1
seems like they had a lot of applicants this year and they need that time. also if they want to protect yield, they might wait for a significant chunk of applications to be withdrawn, so theyll need until april 1. imo, itll come out on 28th. they release decisions on thursdas.
