Dear _____,
Congratulations again on your admittance to Tulane University! We want to be sure you and your family have all of your questions answered about life at one of the nation's best universities. That's why I hope you'll join us for an exclusive chat for admitted students on Monday, February 22, at 6:00 p.m. Central Time (7:00 p.m. Eastern Time).
Tulane Admission Counselors will be online and available to answer any questions from you or your parents about financial aid, scholarships and student life. Go to the Tulane admission homepage on Monday, February 22, and look under the "Events and Deadlines" section for the link to join the chat, which will run until 8:00 p.m. Central Time (9:00 p.m. Eastern Time).
We hope to see you - and your questions - there!
Sincerely,

90% of undergrads graduate within 4 years.
Merit aid is given to the top 25% of applicants.
Classes must be taught by Professors. Only 3% of classes will have a TA assisting a Professor.
All the freshman dorms have community bathrooms except for Wall. The bathrooms are cleaned at least once a day.
Honors Classes are reserved for Honors Students. (fallenchemist???)

I think there was probably just have a communication/terminology gap here. Without seeing the exact exchange, I suspect the TU person was referring to the Honors Colloquium courses and some other courses related to the Honors thesis. From the Tulane website:

And this is right from the Tulane catalog, the “bible” of rules and regulations.

(All bolding is mine for emphasis)

To me the first part seems to be worded to differentiate those particular Honors courses as being for HP students only. Otherwise they could have simply said honors sections are for honors students only, but they never do. The last quote from the handbook almost exactly mirrors what I was verbally told by someone while I was down there for Honors weekend, I think it was Dr. Luongo but I couldn’t swear to it. So a non-Honors student would presumably have to get waived in by the professor, and for good students that shouldn’t be an issue unless the Honors students fill the section first. As with all courses, availability can be an issue, especially if one is talking about a particular section.

However, I obviously want to make sure what I say is correct, so I will get in touch with TU on this question when I am done with this business trip middle of next week.

Thanks FC!
I have the exchange on a partial transcript on my machine at home. The question about honors classes was straightforward and so was the response. I’ll get the exact text along with admission counselor’s name.

TU-RICKYH-2 says: Can non honors students get into honors classes

PascaleTU-guest: _4Ricky unfortunately Honors Classes are reserved for Honors Students. However all stuents(sp) can apply to Join our Honors Program. After the freshman year the gpa requirement is 3.6
PascaleTU-guest: _4Ricky * all Tulane students can apply not incoming students

PascaleTU is Pascale Gerdes, an “assistant Director of Admission”

Thanks AVHS. I plan to try and get the definitive word on this on Monday if possible. Still traveling then, but might have a chance to check with my ultimate source! lol

OK, I have what I think we can all agree is the definitive answer to the vexing question of who can sign up for Honors courses and sections. I am afraid Ms. Gerdes has the same mistaken idea a lot of students have.

Hope that helps. I think this is typical of the attitude of Tulane profs towards teaching and their willingness to answer questions. He got back to me within 3 hours, btw.
