Connex2102- You nailed it. Similar to what I had posted in another thread. They need to take a 2nd look and take as many of these kids within reason as possible and scale back on RD even if cost them a little on the almighty USNews rankings.
I have a different perspective on the mistaken email than you do. I don’t think letting the 130 into the class would be the fair or right thing to do. It would mean that 130 other deserving kids would never have a chance to attend Tulane. These are not just “EA” or “EDII” kids in the abstract. They are my friends and classmates who may want to attend Tulane every bit as much as your son or client.
@Nomo1999- if it was your friend or son or daughter you would certainly have a different view on the situation. I know it.
Sorry to all those who received e-mails. This is brutal. But, blanket acceptance is fair to no one
This is Jeff Schiffman, Director of Admissions, response to the issue:
One thing we pride ourselves here in the Office of Admission is being a compassionate place. I’ve written frequently before about anxiety, love, and the fact that it’s all going to be okay in the end.
Yesterday, we made a mistake that goes against all of those ideas of compassion. A mistake that has created such an immense sense of anxiety for a population of students who want to go to Tulane more than anything else in the world.
Around 2:00pm yesterday, an email from Tulane Technology Services was sent to 130 Early Decision applicants. The email welcomed them to the Tulane family and gave them a Tulane email address. While we are currently people working on figuring out why and how this happened, for those 130 students, that does not matter. We’ve created an anxiety so deep for this group that there really aren’t words to describe it. I’ll own up to it right now.
The reality is that we do not have final decisions for those 130 students yet. For a few hours, they had notification from Tulane that they had been admitted before we sent a email to let them know we did not have a final decision and to disregard the tech services email. I am sure many celebrated and posted on social media about it, as any admitted student should.
What Tulane has done is inexcusable and I offer those students, their families, their high school counselors and their communities a heartfelt apology. Tulane can do better and we will.
Many people have told me that we should just admit that population as it’s the right thing to do. In a perfect world, that would be true. But admitting an additional 130 students is much easier said than done and greatly throws off the size of the class. It simply can’t be done.
Please know I am here to speak with each of you who was affected by this. You can email me any time at jschiffm@tulane.edu. Right now, I don’t have all of the answers. We are working as quickly as we can to get decisions to this ED group. I can’t say “I know what you’re going through,” because I do not. All I can offer is a an apology.
Life is so much about how you respond (not react) in situations like this. It is my hope that we learn from this. We have really messed this one up, and for that, I offer you my deepest apology.
Tulane really does feel crappy about the mistake! I know it sucks, but whatever happens tonight, the sun will still come up tomorrow.
@loop2loop Why would you want to be accepted to a college based on a technical glitch over your own merits?
what time do you find out on the 20th? and is it email?
Jeff,
The fact that my daughter openly cried in class with her “acceptance” breaks my heart but does not bother me nearly as much as the incompetence of your “world class” institution. Your staff has been extremely unresponsive and callous to the concerns and heartache of the ED applicants-with applicants who received the email to just “wait until the portal updates.” As academicians, my family are more disappointed in the Tulane system than words could ever express. I hope that you can live with yourselves when you look into the mirror after having broken the hearts of the hopeful.
Here Here CardiologyErie! Very well said! Please post under Jeffs’s thread through.
Loop2loop. Tell he me how to do it and I will

What’s meant for you will not pass you…
I’m waiting ED too, but I remind myself of that quote as I wait for what I’m sure is defered by this point.
Is it possible for EA people to find out tonight too?
@frazzledforever, We should find out in a couple of minutes.
but isn’t that only for ED? @“800m In My Blood” ?
My portal hasn’t updated.
Nuthin.
@frazzledforever, I meant that at 8:00 we would see whether our EA portals updated. My son’s did not, at least.
So… I got my decision guys. So confused
