Turing Scholars 2018

geomom,

Just curious what other schools you are looking at, if you don’t mind. My son is also a computer science applicant. Alas, his SAT score is not 2380. I was getting hopeful that he would make it in towards the latter part of the cycle because it seemed to me that the SAT numbers were generally coming down as we progressed in the cycle. (I guess I was wrong on that.) So, it’s kind of discouraging to see your son just now getting in with those scores. I would think, though, that you would have a really got shot at the top four (MIT, Stanford, CMU, Berkeley) with those stats. Don’t get me wrong, I think Turing is right there at this point, but maybe not recognized as such by a wider audience.

My son is pretty set on game programming and/or interactive media. That’s why Texas is attractive - the Game Development certificate in collaboration with Radio-Television-Film. On account of that interest, Stanford and Berkeley are less appealing.

He applied to
MIT (for comparative media studies as well as CS), EA, deferred
University of Texas, admitted
University of Utah, admitted
University of Southern California, computer science - games, RD, waiting
University of Southern California, School of Cinematic Arts, RD, waiting
Carnegie Mellon University, RD, waiting
University of Washington, RD, waiting

Geomom,

Thanks for expanding my knowledge and best of luck to your son.

Hi!

I was accepted to UT Austin today as an out-of-state admit (for CS) and applied to Turing and Dean’s scholars programs. Do notices for honors program decisions come out at the same time as regular admission?

AwesomeToad
No. Honors programs are different from regular admissions.

Interesting about kids dropping to not write a thesis. Wonder if it happens in other honors programs.

You guys who haven’t heard yet and have great credentials, hang in there. My older son was in a similar situation this time last year. I was wondering what the heck. He was last among his friends to hear about honors (not Turing). I can’t remember when he got the letter, but it wasn’t until early spring I think. I have no idea in what order UT processes the applications.

Just got the email today for Turing Scholars
It said they would follow up with mail.

Congrats to your Son, Geomom. I recall reading his stats earlier in this thread and they were outstanding. Does anyone have any insight into how long Turing will continue to dribble out acceptances? I’m pretty sure most are out already, but I thought I remembered someone saying somewhere that they would continue through the end of February. Can’t remember where I read that and can’t find it back now. Still hoping to hear from them, but hope is dwindling as the days tick by with no email . . .

@cdkmom - I mentioned that emails will trickle in through February in the DS thread. That’s probably what you are remembering. A friend told me he got the Turing Scholar mail in snail mail ( no email received).

Thanks, cdkmom! There is a Turing event/tours/reception on February 17th. My husband and son are planning on attending from OOS. I would think they would notify everyone early enough to be able to attend.

For those of you who have received acceptance to Turing for this fall, when did you submit your Honors application? Was it before the “recommended” date of October 15th? Also, did all of you have some type of coding or other computer science experience already?

Just officially accepted the Turing Scholars Honors Program offer today.
Looking forward to meeting new people! :)
