tv?

Who's bringing one? Someone suggested that I should wait to confer with my roommate, because a room with two tv's is cluttered and "un-homey". That would be alot easier if Stanford would tell us who are roommate was BEFORE we get there. Anyway, are you guys buying televisions?

isn't there a tv lounge you could go to instead? no idea how big the dorms are gonna be..

I suggest you buy a TV/Monitor combo. They're a bit more expensive but in the end it'll save you a lot of space and maybe even some money.

I'm not getting a tv, waste of my time and I prefer reading anyway (gasp). I don't watch much tv, and if I did want to there's always the lounge. Still, wait until you get there first, it's better to co-ordinate with the roomie.

i refuse to buy a tv. if my roommate has one thats fine. i just don't want to have the option of waking up and staying in bed doing nothing. hopefully not having a tv in the room will help me to actually finish homework or go outside and do something useful. tv's like heroine.

"tv's like heroin" - ahahahaha good call.

But, if you ARE interested in buying a TV, there are places around Palo Alto where you can buy one for a decent price. One that comes to mind is Fry's Electronics - most of the electronics there are a good deal...and it's only a couple of minutes away from Stanford. Just FYI. :)

I'm with you, coqui -- I'm not going to spend good money (and use up dorm space!) on something that will probably just distract me and cause me to lose sleep. If my roommate wants one, that's fine, but I'm not going out of the way to get one...

I'm not going to get one, mostly because I don't watch it much anyway. I figure the lounge will work when I do want to watch some telly. One of my friends is going to buy media center for her computer so she can watch tv. It's cheaper than a set so it's a good idea for people who are addicted to shows.

I'd say TV tuner card is the way to go- you just pop it into your computer and can watch TV on it. Or, for easier install, you can get an external one that plugs into your computer via a USB port (and I think has a remote control):

<a href="http://www.newegg.com/ProductSort/SubCategory.asp?Subcategory=47&DEPA=0&CMP=KNC-600673key%5B/url%5D">http://www.newegg.com/ProductSort/SubCategory.asp?Subcategory=47&DEPA=0&CMP=KNC-600673key</a></p>

but what if you need to use your computer WHILE watching tv, which of course is simply justified proscrastination.

Well, if you're a major dork, you get a dual head (two outputs) video card, and run dual monitor, so on one screen is your TV and the other is your computer. That's what my friend is doing. In fact, he's getting a top-of-the line card that has TWO tv tuners in it, so he can basically make his computer a TIVO. I'm not getting a TV tuner at all, though, because I don't really watch that much TV.

You basically can't pick up anything on antenna here, so you'd have to get cable which is really expensive: $19.95 activation and $27.95/month for analog service and $29.95 activation and $39.95/month for digital service plus any premium channels you add on. Make sure you consult with your roommate first if you were planning on splitting the costs.
