Two new electric trolley cars for Chapman U

Students and faculty can soon expect to see something new roaming the streets surrounding campus. Two new electric trolley cars are expected to be delivered by the end of the month for Chapman’s use. The idea for bringing the trolleys to Chapman was originally conceived by President Jim Doti.

One trolley route will begin at the 635 West Palm Ave. parking lot, where both vehicles will be stored, and end at the Argyros Forum Parking Lot. The second trolley will run a course between Schmid Gate and the Orange Circle. Both will repeat the same routes throughout the day, running on a continuous loop.

The trolleys are planned to operate from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. The three hour break will be required in order to recharge each electric trolley’s battery.

Each trolley will be equipped to transport a maximum of 10 passengers, including the driver, and travel at a speed of 15 to 25 mph. Both will be licensed to operate on the street and be free of charge to those that wish to ride. Seatbelts will be required for all passengers and standing will be prohibited throughout the ride.

SO hilarious! That’s my D quoted at the end of the link posted above. She seems thrilled not to have to hoof it the grueling 3 blocks over there to Dodge from the dorms. Nor will she have to put up with the annoyance of passing by all those quaint shops and cafes in the two blocks between campus and the circle. Plus, she will no longer have to battle the harsh elements there in SoCal! (I hear there was a stiff breeze the other day and some students were tempted to put on a light jacket!) Man, these kids have it good! I can hardly wait to hear about the high speed monorail project between the new performing arts center and the liquor store!

LOL, S-fan. Seriously. I just guffawed reading your post. The trolleys are pretty cute. It’s gonna be even more like Main Street at Disneyland!

Fun. I just emailed my S to ask if he’s seen them.

For the next few Saturday afternoons, students living on campus without a car won’t have to look far for a free ride. Chapman’s Shop n’ Shuttle service will provide students with transportation to nearby grocery and convenience stores, debuted Saturday and will run once a week until May 4. The service meets the needs of the students who rely on friends and roommates to get around.

Funded and created by Student Government Association (SGA), the program will cost $275 to pay for gas and student drivers.

The van, which holds up to seven passengers, picks students up every 30 minutes beginning at 2 p.m. in the Sandhu Residence Lot next to the volleyball court. The van route runs east down Walnut Avenue and turns left onto Tustin Avenue, making its first stop at Albertsons, followed by Target, Walmart, Sprouts, Trader Joe’s and CVS.

Now that sounds useful! D says she has not yet spotted the trolleys which carry all of 9 passengers an average of about 3 blocks. I suspect those are more of an advertising vehicle (pun intended.) The board member who sponsors them owns a car dealership and, I’m told, will put his ads on the trolleys.
