Typical Schedule

How many classes do ppl usually take?? How hard are they? How did you current UVA students find your finals for 1st semester??

A current student should answer your questions about the courses and exams, but in general, UVa students take 5 classes a semester, which depending on the credits per class, is around 15 credits a semester.

well, i took 5 classes 1st semester, 15 credits. difficulty really has quite a bit to do with what the class is, who is teaching it, and how hard you are willing to work. i imagine that ought to go without saying but i'll say it nonetheless. finals can be pretty tough. some teachers curve, some do not, and each has a different scale for + and - grades. for instance, the cutoff for A in my Learning (Behavioral Psych) class was 95. 94.9 got an A-, or a 3.7. In Cognition, it was 93. So it varies. Neurobiology didn't have a final--just 3 midterms, but they were absurdly hard (2nd most failed class at UVA behing Calc 132).

the median gpa at uva for 1st years (A&S) is 2.96. that follows a steady progression upwards to about 3.18 for fourth years. since retention rate is high, i think that points to a few students getting shoved aside but most getting their ess aitch eye tea together as they go.

slackers do not do well at UVA. unless one considers 2.7-3.1 doing well. you will work hard here.

i am a transfer. i have had to work three times as hard for my 3.94 here as i did for my 4.0 at my last school.

any more questions, just ask.

hey thanx neurotic! Are you doing pre-med? whats ur major?

cog science/neuroscience
i want to go into research/teaching

thats cool.
For first years the median gpa is 2.96 in the college??? Holy crap thats tough
btw, can i PM you so that you can read my "Why UVA essay"?? I got deferred ED, but im trying to get back in!

for more gpa info. :)

just shoot the essay to my email....

what is it?

Neurotic, I love the fact you spelled out "ess aitch eye tea" to get around the automatic censors. ;)

Just to point out, according to that link it is not the median GPA but the mean GPA. As such, outliers have a greater effect on it than if it were the median. I suspect the median GPA for first years is a bit higher.

did you notice the sample size? over thousands of kids it ain't gonna matter much. just to point out. :P

you're right, it is mean. i was going from memory and assumed that they would have used median for exactly the same reason you pointed out.

it doesn't make a real difference.

i am wearing ketchup in my hair tonight and it looks divine

outliers wont have that big of an affect. If the median was "substantially higher," then you'd have a ton of the class getting like 2.0's and lower, and that obviously isnt the case: consider like 98% of first years return for their 2nd year, and I believe getting below a 2.0 puts you on academic probation. I'm sure for every kid getting a 1.0-2.0 theres a kid getting a 4.0 to even it out.
