I just did something so stupid. I emailed an admissions officer at my dream school a letter of interest. The issue is that I accidentally sent her a draft of my letter with a huge error in it.
In the first sentence of my letter I accidentally kept a reminder that I had left for myself to check her title to see if she was an admissions officer (and not an admissions counselor/director/etc) So the beginning of the first sentence of the email was:
"As an admissions officer (makes sure she’s an admissions officer) at a highly sought after school… "
The rest of the letter was fine but that first part was supposed to be changed before I sent the email. I quickly emailed her after asking her to excuse the error and included my edited letter I initially wanted to send. I can’t help but worry this makes me look super unprofessional and just stupid. Will this mistake hurt my chances of getting into my dream school?
No chance of getting in… just kidding. If this school doesn’t accept you because of a very minor typo in an email, do you really even want to go there? I’m not an AO, but I’m sure it’s nothing to worry about.
Why did you send a ‘letter of interest’ anyway? Usually the application is your indication of interest. I think it is embarrassing to have the phrase ‘a highly sought after college’ in the message, and a not to make sure you are writing an admission officer, lol.
Look, for FSU I accidently sent them my unedited essay with typos and pointless sentences galore, and they ended up inviting me to their honors program. At UF, who has very holistic admissions, I accidently spelled “sergeant” as “sargent,” and they still ended up accepting me. Now I don’t know how prestigious of a school this is, or if that can make or break your chances at that school, but given my experience I think you’ll be fine. Besides, there isn’t much you can do about it now anyways, so don’t worry about it.
