U-M View of the U Reception

Did any class of 2014 students attend this? I got a letter and e-mail from UMich inviting me, but I wasn't able to go on the date they came to our town. I was wondering if they told you anything important, especially about "Get tips for filling out your application including a list of common mistakes to avoid". Anything you anyone can fill me in on? I've been kinda mad at myself for missing this, and was wondering if I missed anything important.

Thanks!

Summary of the presentation:

Fill out the app online, and it has a built in app scanner to avoid errors

Apply before Nov. 1 for Early Action, 'nough said

Submit official ACT scores, be sure to request transcript and letters of rec early (as in, before Nov. 1)

Know what school you want to apply to.

Then they talked about life on campus. Summary: dorms are fun freshmen year, freshmen can’t have cars, greek life is for some but not all, join clubs, meet new people, love Ann Arbor, get football tickets

And then they took questions, of which none were worth mentioning.

Overall, one could read through their website and gain most of the information given. But it was cool to hear from the student panelists.

Thanks! It looks like I already got all of that info from my visit to Ann Arbor. “freshmen can’t have cars” is news to me though, I was thinking of bringing one. Thanks for the info!

Yeah, it sucks. But parking on campus is worse. There are never spots available, and there is no designated student lot. It really sucks for nursing students (I am a nursing applicant) because in junior and senior year nursing students need cars to drive to off campus clinicals but likely won’t find anywhere to park while on-campus.

And that’s why off-campus housing was invented. Though freshmen year I want to live in the dorms.

There are parking lots by a few of the bus stops where you could leave a car. You would have to take a bus to the car though.

nope not me

As a seventeen year old applicant from Singapore (driving age is 18 here), it’s not altogether unthinkable not having a car around.

Thats a new one, I thought remember hearing that freshmen can have cars.

Singapore and Ann Arbor are very different. Someone not living in the dorms does need a car. If I were to walk it would be an hour and a half each way, in the winter.

You can bring your car if you also bring your parking space. You can’t purchase a permit and even if you can, it’s like a hunting license.

The only reason I was gonna bring a car was so I could drive home to visit if I ever wanted to (I only live 1.5 hours away) but having a car there would only be another worry so its probably not worth it.

^As I said earlier, there are plenty of places in Ann Arbor where you can leave a car free. You’ll have to take a bus to get to them, but if you’re just gonna take it home on weekends, it’s more convenient than other methods of travel.
