I'm a junior at the University of Arizona who is taking a year off school and hoping to transfer to UC Santa Cruz as a junior. I have a 3.0 gpa, but in my last year or so I had a couple withdrawals and then took slightly fewer units per semester. I also re-took a math course that I failed, but it shouldn't show the F on the transcript because of Grade Replacement Opportunity, and I re-took it and got a C. I have gotten 4 C's, 14 B's, and 5 A's. I was in a sorority, and also had an internship that counted as class credit which gave me experience in my major. My admissions essay is probably pretty good.

Why would you want to go to ucsc its soooooooooooooooo ghetto believe me i grew up in santa cruz it’s full of nasty ass hippies, bums and mexicans who are all about the environment… But if your major has to do wit the enviornment or sumthing like that then be my guest and apply i was gonna go there but i decided to go to ucla… U might be able to get in wit that gpa but i wouldnt count on it cuz even though its a crappy ass school it thinks its all of that and a bag of chips… My frend joelie maldonado transfered out of ucla to go to ucsc and she regrets it big time…

UCSC is consistently ranked one of the pretties colleges in the US, and can’t be compared to UCLA in terms of location. Either you want to live in a huge city or you don’t; you wouldn’t attend UCSC if you did. To answer the OP’s question, your GPA is borderline for transfers coming from a cc with priority so it might be a long-shot but you never know.

What did you think recommending UCLA to the OP was going to help at all if they claim they have a 3.0 and are OOS? They were looking for their chances at UCSC, not if it was a gud school or if it suks. I thought it was amusing that you chose to call the school ghetto, which it is not at all, when you write like you do. Ghetto.

A 3.0 is not borderline for a transfer coming from a CCC for UCSC. I define borderline as the minimum GPA for eligibility to each respective UC campus.

These are the published minimums for CCC students.

Given this, it’s not impossible for a CCC student to get into even Cal or UCLA with a low 3.0 assuming you have a lot going for you i.e. upward trend, work/family responsibilities, awesome essays, etc…

For OOS students, I was unable to find published minimums, but I would assume that they are slightly higher than for in state CC students.

I would guess that the OP has a decent shot at UCSC, but dismal chance at UCLA since a 3.0 is the minimum for CCC students, not OOS.

Despite what’s the minimum possible gpa that will be accepted to be considered, the average admitted gpa for transfer students last year was a 3.33 which is almost incomparable to a 2.4. And because like we said this gpa is for ccc students that have the highest priority, oos 4-year transfers who have basically worst priority will need to have an even higher one.

U of A is in a pretty “ghetto” town and is in the middle of nowhere in the desert. It is very isolated, with the nearest city (Phoenix) an hour and a half drive away on a very boring 2-lane highway. There are lots of violent bums and very sketchy people around town. There have been serial rapists and a murder in the dorms since I’ve been there. All the students seem to be very shallow, at least based on everything I’ve ever heard come out of anyone’s mouth, and they consist of either native Arizonans, who were educated in the state ranked 50th (very lowest) in quality of school systems, or Californians who weren’t smart enough to get into a UC and only wanted to go there for its party reputation. Everyone is an alcoholic (ok, well maybe just most people). Oh, and what is wrong with “nasty ass” hippies and Mexicans? I prefer hippies to the shallow, vacuous alcoholics at U of A, and I really don’t care how many Mexicans are around… And I like nature and forests, which makes UCSC very pretty to me. Are you a republican or something? Maybe that would explain the grammar.

Wow. U of A was 1 of 8 universities I was considering as a transfer. Thanks for writing about your experiences there. Now I am defintely not applying to their film department. I am right with you. I prefer the hippies and mexicans too! UCLA and USC are my top choices.

Just to update, I amazingly ended up getting into not only UCSC, but Santa Barbara and Irvine as well! Maybe I had really good admissions essays? I am having a tough time deciding where to go though. I’m afraid SB may attract too similar a crowd as UofA, and Irvine seems kind of boring, so I might end up still going to Santa Cruz anyway.

Ok so I need to decide between UCSC and UCSB right now. I am shy, very liberal, kind of weird on the inside (although not outwardly so), I like people a lot but am saddened by airheads whose only interests are partying and drinking and who cannot spell simple common words yet still manage to get good grades, I like intellectual/philosophical conversations, I like trees and green hills, I like bright colors, and dislike superficiality.

UCSC sounds like the best fit, right?? It’s just so hard to believe with everyone loving UCSB so much and it being the “better” school (harder to get into).

What does everyone think? I need to decide like…today. Unless anyone has a compelling argument against SC or for SB I’m probably gonna go for SC.

Please do yourself a favor and go to UCSC. All the cons you listed are prevalent enough at UCSB to the extent that they become connotative to UCSB.

Also, interestingly enough, all the pros, or positive characteristics, are prevalent at UCSC. SC would be the best fit for you.
