U of M Honors vs. Notre Dame

I plan to double major in biology and psychology and then go on to med school. I feel like U of M Honors has more academic prestige, but Notre Dame has great advising and a alumni network that could provide connections for med school, internships, etc. Any input would be much appreciated. Thanks!

On the whole, I’d say ND is slightly more prestigious, but when you add in Honors that’s a big boost to Michigan, plus sciences are so-so at ND whereas Michigan has the backing of a major graduate research program. ND does have a formidable alumni network, but it’s not like UMich grads just get out of school and go into hiding. You’re going to meet plenty of people who can connect you for med school, internships, etc. through either. Additional points of differentiation to consider would be cost (who knows if you’ll get a job/internship coming out of school in this economy?), location (geographically and as far as Ann Arbor vs. South Bend), and certainly religious affiliation among others.

I’d say that Univ of Michigan (is that what you mean by U of M) has it over ND for graduate school admissions. My daughter got into the honors program at Michigan (which was high on her list, even though she is going elsewhere), and we were made to understand by former Michigan honors program alum that there is much personalized attention and perks, being in the honors program.

I would think, as a med. school grad. myself, that medical school would take a Michigan applicant over a ND one, all things being equal. Just my opinion. And the research opportunities at Michigan are incomparable. And kids are happy at Michigan–really, love their school. I can’t speak to ND; in my day, it was a football school and not much more.

Umich has the largest alumni network or any school – something like 500,000 alumni! I heard they also have something called “Blue Hiring Blue.” You may want to check it out on their website.
