I'd like to have your ideas since it's a CMU tread- I am an international student and have to pay almost same tuition for both school, (over $40,000-) and I am interesting in engineering. Your opinions PLEASE!! (sorry it's a same posting at college admission)

I think someone asked the same question a few months ago- search the threads. In any case, both are good schools, but the atmosphere is fairly different. Sports are much more important to U of Michigan- they are a Big Ten school. You'll find smaller classes at CMU, and probably more chances for research as an undergrad.

I graduated from U of M Engineering school 22 years ago. My son is a freshman in engineering at CMU right now. I would not hesitate to say that his academic experience is far superior to my experience at Michigan. While I loved Ann Arbor and U of M, the academics is much more personal at CMU. I would say the majority of classes that I had at U of M were large lectures with grades based on a mid-term and a final exam. No homework assigned or graded. You were on your own. Especially for the first two years. Back then, I did not really have an engineering class until I was a junior. I feel like my son's classes are much smaller (still probably 200 or so in his math class) and he knows people. He has assignments that are due every week in most of his classes and people(TA's I think) actually grade the homework! What a great idea! As a freshman engineer he is required to take two introductory engineering classes. Both of them had lab sections that the students actually got hands on experience right from the beginning. It may be a lot different at U of M now, maybe there is a lot more hands on stuff going on. My son was also accepted there, and we toured it. I got the feeling it was still a really big place and you would have to forge your own way. At CMU my son's advisor is the dean of the engineering school and he invites students to come to his office and talk with him. I never saw the dean of the engineering school at Michigan in person. If I had to do it all over again I would go to a smaller school like CMU.

Thanks for the responses can anyone tell me which one is a more respected school? In terms of prestige, education, reputation, and job placement, which one is the best overall? Which one would you go to? I'm really at a loss as to which one I want to go to. Since I'm an international student, I don't have much information about these two schools reputations. I'd like to get more your opinions, and hopefully I can choose right place for me.

That really depends on what you plan to major in. If it's Engineering or CS. I'd say CMU hands down. Otherwise, UMich. But really, you have to take everything into account before making your decision. If there are specific things you'd like to know, maybe we could help.

"If it's Engineering or CS. I'd say CMU hands down."

not really. CS, yes. Engineering. No. ranking michigan engineering and CMU engineering is like spliting hair, impossible

Yeah, you're probably right, what I meant by engineering was ECE actually. :p

2008 new engineering ranking cmu beat michigan.

I don't know what the rankings are, but if the difference is less than, say, 5 spots, it's pretty much insignificant. There is no 'best overall' for two schools of similar caliber. They're just different; each has its strengths and weaknesses.
