Hi,

Does anyone have the U.S.News 2008 Top Public Schools rankings? I can't find them anywhere online.

Thanks in advance!

I believe you have to pay to see them online, but, while I don't feel like typing all 50 out, the top 10 are:

5. UNC-Chapel Hill
6. College of William and Mary
7. Georgia Institute of Technology
8. UC-San Diego
8. UIllinois-Urbana-Champaign
8. UWisconsin-Madison

Why is Wisconsin so low? Isn't it usually #6 or #7?

Difference between #6 and #8 is not that much.

11) UC- Davis
11)U of Washington
13) UC - Irvine
13) UC - Santa Barbra

Clemenson U ?

Surely that's gotta be Clemson?

Is this list official?

Does anyone else feel UT-Austin got shafted?

^^ A bit. I would put it just above UC Davis. Then again, I think it's best to group them.

If I had to group them...

Group 1
Berkeley
Michigan
Virginia
UCLA

Group 2
Wisconsin (Underrated)
UNC
UT
UCSD
Illinois

Honestly, I don't know anything about William and Mary, so I can't group it.

I feel like UT and Wisconsin are constantly getting underrated. (I should also state that I'm a little biased because I'm considering transferring to UT.)

This is just something i pulled from a Berkeley thread...It's just a compilation of graduate rankings.

Oh yeah, and I know someone's going to say "Phd program is different than undergrad." I know, but this is just something to look at.

When you look at the ten most highly ranked publics, there are lots of ways to evaluate them or group them. Here are some metrics that help put them into perspective:

I don’t think that this measure is very useful for ranking public universities, but I think it is illuminating that the most actively supported alumni groups for these types of colleges are all in the South.

20Legend: oops, you're right

the top 10 isnt too bad, but the 11-45 is terrible.

hawkette: Thanks for that information. I just wanted to make a couple of corrections here for UNC-CH. Not sure where you accessed the figures, but the most recent information for UNC-CH, from the website, is:

50% of classes have 20 or fewer students (not 47%)
70% of classes have fewer than 30 students

And percent of in-state students is actually 82%, not 85% (and has been at 82% for ~25 years).

The average SAT, at least for the Fall 2007 class, was 1302.

Small corrections, but for what it's worth . . .

Go Bears! We have no money!

"the top 10 isnt too bad, but the 11-45 is terrible."

Apayton, I think you understate the quality of the top 10 state universities and overstate how "terrible" the next 30 or so states universities.

Cal, Michigan and UVa are generally ranked among the top 25 in the nation. If you were to ask leading academics and intellectuals to list their top 10 or top 15 universities, Cal and Michigan would generally make the cut.

UCLA, W&M, Wisconsin and UNC are also ranked pretty high. Definitely among the top 35 universities in the country.

Texas, UIUC, GT and UCSD (aswell as a couple other UCs) and several other state universities like Washington, PSU, Maryland, Florida etc... also rank among the top 50 in the nation.

None of those 18 or so public schools come close to being "terrible". In fact, they range from elite to very good.

After those 18, you have a bunch of other good public universities, like Georgia, Pittsburgh, OSU, Michigan State, Indiana, Purdue, Minnesota, Colorado, New Hampshire, University of Kansas, Delaware, Virginia Tech and couple of SUNYs etc....

In short, none of the top 40 or 50 public universities is terrible. They are all quite good.

Here's how I would classify state universities:

ELITE:
University of California-Berkeley
University of Michigan-Ann Arbor
University of Virginia

EXCELLENT:
College of William & Mary
University of California-Los Angeles
University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign
University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill
University of Texas-Austin
University of Wisconsin-Madison

VERY GOOD:
Georgia Institute of Technology
Pennsylvania State University-University Park
University of California-Davis
University of California-Irvine
University of California-San Diego
University of California-Santa Barbara
University of Florida
University of Maryland-College Park
University of Washington

GOOD:
Clemson University
Indiana University-Bloomington
Iowa State University
Miami University (Ohio)
Michigan State University
North Carolina State University-Raleigh
Ohio State University
Purdue University-West Lafayette
State University of New York-Binghampton
State University of New York-Stony Brook
Texas A&M University-College Station
University of Arizona
University of California-Riverside
University of California-Santa Cruz
University of Colorado-Boulder
University of Connecticut
University of Delaware
University of Iowa
University of Kansas
University of Minnesota-Twin Cities
University of Pittsburgh
University of Tennessee
University of Vermont
Virginia Tech

Then you have smaller, LACish type state schools like UNC-Asheville, University of Minnesota-Morris, New College of Florida, the College of New Jersey, the Colorado School of Mines and several others that are good.

^^ wouldn't W&M be considered LACish?

Georgia Tech should be in the "Excellent" category .. ;)

GT is more of a specialty school, and in what in specializes in, it is definitely excellent.

I would suggest that someone considering public universities would also consider public liberal arts colleges. These colleges have proven that it is not necessary to pay $40,000 for a strong liberal arts education on a small campus that is solely focused on undergraduates. Top public liberal arts colleges include.

St. Mary's College of Maryland (St. Mary's College of Maryland)
New College of Florida (New College of Florida, The public liberal arts honors college for the state of Florida.)
University of Minnesota, Morris (www.morris.umn.edu)
