UA (Hunstville) shooting?

The husband is claiming that he didn’t know his wife had a gun. That’s very odd. If that’s true then he should be wondering what else his wife kept from him.

And…since when does someone accidentally kill someone and then have a gun later?

Update on my friend’s H’s condition… From the victim’s son…

He is heavily sedated, yet responsive (thumbs up and head nods), the bullet entered through the jaw, fragmented, and made it up to his eye (which we believe will be lost).

However, the neurosurgeon said that no fragments entered his brain. He also has a skull fracture, which I was told is likely a good thing because it prevented his brain from swelling in on itself.

Sorry for the misinformation earlier. Another relative told us that the bullet stopped in his neck, but that was wrong.

Mom2,
Glad to hear the positive (in the scheme of things) report on your friend. We will keep him and your entire community in our prayers.

Mom2, just saw this thread and want to say how glad I am that your friend will most likely be ok. The whole background story on the shooter just gets more and more strange.

Mom2K,

You all are in our thoughts and prayers. How very tragic and sad…

Just to echo the thoughts above, Mom2, you are in our prayers too. Good luck to you and your friend. Please keep us posted.

Thanks…

The H is not “out of the woods” yet. I was told that they removed the bullet during surgery, but I just found out that some of the bullet fragments are still inside him and the surgery was to remove a subdural hematoma.

I was just told that the next 4 days are crucial. He also has multiple skull fractures. I’m not sure if they are from being shot or from his head hitting something or what.

Here’s an account from another faculty member who was in the room, but was not hurt…

* We were 12 all together (including the shooter) sitting around an oval table in a modest size conference room . There were only one door to enter/exit.

The shooter was a disgruntled faculty member who didn’t get tenured after several appeals and a law suit.

About 30min into the meeting, she got up suddenly, took out a gun and started shooting at each one of us. She started with the one closest to her and went down the row shooting her targets in the head.

Our chairman got it the worst as he was right next to her along with two others who died almost instantly.

Six people sitting in the rows perpendicular were all shot fatally or seriously wounded. The remaining 5 including myself were on the other side of the table immediately dropped to the floor.

During a reload, the shooter was rushed, and we pushed her out the hall way and closed the door. Thereafter we barricaded the door and called 911.

At the time, I saw 2 dead bodies already and several wounded. Blood was everywhere with crying and moaning. I was on the phone with 911 reporting what had happened and while waiting we tried to stop the bleeding of those who we thought were still alive.

In about 5 min, the campus and city police, ambulance and a SWAT team arrived. We were in a pool of blood in disbelief of what had happened.

There were 5 of us who got out relatively unscathed – I was one of them.*

Hi, mom, bumping up this thread, wanted to check on your friend’s status. Hope your friend is doing better. Your community is in our prayers.

Thanks for asking. The following is ok to post since it’s from a public blog…

He’s still critical; he’s recovering from more surgery… Amazingly, the bullet didn’t destroy any teeth. The surgery was to repair some facial fractures and to allow some drainage in the eye area.

Here’s a note from the family publicly-posted blog…

we discovered today that many of Joe’s excellent nurses in the NICU were educated at Univ of Alabama in Huntsville and have taken classes from Joe who is a professor of microbiology. At one point Joe had shared with a colleague that he wanted to give all of his students the best education possible because “one never knows if one of your former students will some day be taking care of you.” Eerily prescient but a grace-filled moment as well.

Thanks for that post, Mom2. It should make us all remember what’s really important in education and life. Good luck to your friend who remains in our prayers.
