UC Admission points

For schools like UCSD, how do you calculate the points you’ll get? And for the number of extra a-g courses you take, do they count a-g course in your senior year? Heres the site:

poor kid, here you go :)

check into the link in post #182

thank you very much! i think i barely made UCSDs point cutoff thing!

Bare in mind that that link is 5 years old and might be a little outdated.

It is outdated; for one, UCSD uses uncapped GPA for point allotment now (check their site for proof).

^Wait… no way???

So, in sophomore and junior year, if you have taken more then the 8 semesters of Honors, those too will count towards your gpa for SD???

I took 10 semesters of approved (extra point) GPA. 16 Semesters of Honors.

Does that mean I get 10 extra points?

nope u only get 8 semesters of honors onto ur UC GPA. it sucks but thats how it is…

oh and another thing, it says u get points for being a captain or something like that. does that count when u were captain of a jv sport or no?

I hate the 8 point thing, they should give extra points to all honors classes that are approved by UC’S. I know this inflates the GPA for others who have all Honors and 4.0’s, they should deserve it. Also it might give kids going to better schools an advantage, but this part is made up by the fact that they give points on school level.

I just hate it how people take easy classes in high school and beef up their gpa’s and qualify for programs such as ELC. =(

btw, could I get income points and single parent points for this…

I live with my Mom, she makes under 60,000. My dad lives in Boston, they are not divorced, together they make a good amount of money.

That is a common misconception on cc. ELC is calculated using weighted, UNCAPPED gpa. Thus, every UC-approved honors & AP/IB course will be used in the calculation by HS. (The 8 semester cap is only used for minimum eligibility purposes.)

Agree with Blue however ELC is calculated only on 10th and 11th grade GPA with the 8 point cap (so basically 8 semesters) of AP, IB or weighted honors courses.

bluebayou is correct that ELC gpa is uncapped. In fact, many UCs use uncapped or slightly capped gpa for admission evaluation. The 8 semester cap is only for eligibility calculation.

Quote directly from the UC ELC web site [Submission Information](http://www.ucop.edu/sas/elc/requirementsinfo.html)
The ELC program awards a bonus point for UC-certified honors courses. UC-approved honor courses are marked with a yellow star on the high school’s Doorways course list. All honors courses are used in calculating the GPA (in other words, the ELC program uses a weighted, uncapped GPA).

Also we have first hand experience. Son is a senior, goes to highly competitive public school and did not make ELC with a 4.45 UC gpa (10 semesters of AP/Honors). Friends with 4.5 (12 semesters of AP/Honors) and 4.55 (14 semesters of AP/Honors) both made it. If it was capped, S would have the same gpa as his friends and made ELC. The ELC web site have info on how same gpa are treated.

Actually, each application reader has access to ALL gpa’s: unweighted, weighted-capped, and weighted-uncapped.

[UC San Diego Comprehensive Review Admission Process: Freshman Selection, Fall 2008](http://www.ucsd.edu/prospective-students/admissions/undergraduate-admissions/freshmen/process.html)

The title indicates they use uncapped. However, the description seems to describe capped GPA. Now I’m confused. I think the general trend, however, is what blues is saying: capped is for minimum admission requirements only, the uncapped will probably be the most telling factor for admissions (although, as blue said, they have access to all gpas).

In the case of UCLA and Cal, it says right on their web site that they use the UC Eligibility Index for the academic portion of the app. The UC Eligibility Index say this:

“Honors Courses: The University assigns extra points for up to eight semesters of University-certified honors-level and Advanced Placement courses taken in the last three years of high school: A=5 points, B=4 points, C=3 points. No more than two yearlong UC-approved honors level courses taken in the 10th grade may be given extra points. A grade of D in an honors or advanced placement course does not earn extra points.”

^^UC Eligibility Index is just that, for eligibility.

Again, each application reader will receive ALL gpa’s, and can will be RANKED by high school applications. Yeah I know, officially class rank is NOT an admission critieria, but the simple fact is that is shows up on the UC app, as calculated by UC just like ELC is calculated by UC. Of course, not your true HS rank, but just the rank of all students who apply to UC from your HS. And, as I posted before, the UC app reader will see EVERYONE of your test scores, even if officially only the top scores count for admission purposes.

If you don’t believe me, call the 800 number on the UC app website.

btw: check out UCLA’s website for class profile…is the gpa capped or uncapped? Are those a-g courses ONLY Soph & Jr year, or all years? Hmmmmmmm
