Has anyone received their scores at UCLA? Also, what happens if you do not pass or satisfy the requirement? Somewhat worried here.
If you did not pass the AWP Exam, you will need to enroll in a preparatory English class. Your counselor will instruct you in how to satisfy this requirement at new student orientation. See http://wp.ucla.edu/wp/students/
@ProfessorD do you know if I will be behind if I take the preparatory English class? Say I have to now take 3 english classes instead of the 2 if i passed.
It is possible to fulfill the Writing requirement before regular classes begin, either through summer school or an articulating community college course.
Academic advising will know whether there are slots available in summer courses for new students (sorry I can’t be more specific: administration deals with placement and enrollment - we just teach 'em and grade 'em). The most likely outcome is an additional course (English comp. A) before entering the regular two-term English 2 composition sequence.
FYI, if you complete one of the Freshman GE clusters you get Writing II credit. That might help with the concern about having to take a lot of English classes.
I should add that there was a decent amount of analytical reading and writing for the Cluster that my D took. If you have weak reading and writing skills it might be better not to take the cluster and just take the full sequence of required English classes.
@anomander How exactly does the cluster work? I read into the link you posted but it seems like a brief overview.
The cluster is a sequence of 3 GE classes you start first quarter freshman year and continue through the end of the year. You have to complete the sequence in order to get the writing credit, but if you do you essentially get credit for four classes by only taking three (there’s a requirement you need to meet for the credit, described on the website I linked). You should be able to see the general categories of the various clusters on the website. I think there’s 10 different clusters; they’re pretty popular and fill up fast.
IIRC when you look at class listings some classes will say which cluster they apply towards. Although people not doing the cluster sequence can also sign up for the same classes. When you attend new student orientation to sign up for your first couple classes the counsellors should explain everything in more detail.
has anyone from ucla received their awpe score yet ?
@pleaseacceptme99 Hello! The scores went through early this week so either it says satisfied or not, theres no actual number score.
@anomander thank you! I don’t know if i’ll be allowed to take it since I did not pass the UC writing exam which would put me into writing 1
