This is for all of the Anthro majors--it's about time we have our own thread.

Things to discuss:

-Desired school (or school you plan to attend)
-Focus within the major (cultural, biological, archeology, etc)
-What you plan to do with your major (grad school, career)
-Favorite thing about Anthropology

I'll go first.

School: UC Santa Cruz
Focus: Cultural Anthropology with a focus on Gender Studies
Career: It's my dream to go to Berkeley for grad school...as a career I'd love to go into academia as a professor--but who knows? Law school is a potential option
Why I love Anthropology: I've always been fascinated by people and cultures, I just didn't know you could major in it! I also loved taking Sociology/Psychology classes, but I was hesitant to major in them because I love the science aspect of my biology classes....Anthropology seemed like a great combination. I also love how broad of a major Anthropology is...we have a lot of options.

Let's hear from the rest of you!

School: UCB, UCSC as a backup.
Focus: Probably archaeology mixed with classics.
Plans: Grad school, PhD, etc. I want to be a tenured professor, eventually. I’d also love classical civilization, so I’d love to do classical archaeology in the Mediterranean.
Why I love anthro: I’ve always been something of a cultural anthropologist, just by default (feeling like an outsider looking in on silly things like religion and local ritual). History and the humanities/social sciences have always captivated me, and anthro provides a wider perspective than traditional history, and because of the nature of anthro, the two aren’t mutually exclusive. As you said, we can take our degrees almost anywhere.

Hadrian how’s your GPA for Berkeley? I would have loved to have gone there this fall but my GPA was in no way competitive enough with their program.

3.95, so I think I’ve got 50/50 chances or so. My application was as a history major, actually (I put history/anthro or anthro/history on all the schools that allowed alts). I’m not really expecting to get it, and UCSC seems like it’ll be great, anyway.

A 3.95 is very competitive–it seems like you have a great shot. I wouldn’t be too concerned.

What colleges at UCSC are you going to apply to? If I don’t get into Berkeley, I’ll probably go c19-Kresge-Stevenson.

My top 3 are: Porter, Kresge, and Cowell.

Apparently transfer students can’t be in Porter, so I’ll probably be in Kresge.

Anthro homies woot woot.

School: University of California at Los Angeles or University of California Berkeley…don’t know.
Focus: Anthropology with concentration in Archaeology.
Career: I too would adore to go into academia. I am already studying for the GRE. lol
Why I love Anthropology:
I love people, I wish to understand them better and to communicate them. I want every person I come into contact with to feel that they are the most fascinating thing to me because they are. I want to learn how to be a better Global citizen and Anthropology gives me the tools to learn how to interact with everyone despite being from totally different worlds.

Yes! An anthropology thread!

-Desired school: UCLA.
-Focus within the major: Cultural, Applied
-What you plan to do with your major: I’d like to work for AmeriCorps for a year or two after I graduate, and continue on to graduate school.
-Favorite thing about Anthropology: It looks at every aspect of what it means to be human- Past, present, and future. Is there anything more fascinating than mankind?

@jane–What’s the GRE???

@evan–What are the AmeriCorps??

I’m so curious

Ha ha ha. “The AmeriCorps.” Makes it sound like a team of super heroes. Although, I guess that is sort of what we were!

After high school, I served a year with the AmeriCorps nonprofit organization City Year in Los Angeles. AmeriCorps is a government program that supports various nonprofits.

ooooo Evan baby AmeriCorps? aww i have been thinking about doing that!

GRE is the Graduate Record Examination, it is a standardized test that Graduate schools look at when determining your admittance into their programs.

That’s fascinating, another benefit of Anthropology.

I’ve also been interested in social work–who knows where I’ll take my degree. I’m excited to take the classes for Anthro!

I just shed a single tear, Never thought I’d see a thread just for my major :')

I want to go to UC Davis, UC Berkeley, or UCLA
Cultural Anthropology with a Medical Concentration
Med School, or Phd Researcher, can’t quite decide yet :D. I may also try to double major with either Psychology or Biology, not sure there either
Ability to look at a topic from more than one perspective. Especially a topic like medicine - there is way too much at stake in that field to blindly allow one or two country’s ideas of how the sick should be treated to dominate. Plus I love travelling, I DEFINITELY plan to do my fair share of time as a barefoot anthropologist, if you know what I mean :)

AmeriCorps is great! I have an education award of nearly $5,000 because of my service! It’s great!

really! is should stop thinking about and just do it. i am free this summer so i am def gonna check that out.

Oh, it was a 10 month program. ha ha.

@evan so did you quit school for that year? Or is it very little hours per week?

Ha ha ha. I did it after high school. Full time. After 10 months, I had over 2,000 hours of community service. Looks great for college apps!

Wow…that’s awesome. I don’t even have over 100 community service hours. So you basically took that year off?? Smart man! Was it pretty fun? did it involve traveling?
