UC Berkeley 2016 Transfer Thread

@goodmarks, good stuff.

Right off the bat, though, you cannot TAG Davis as the last two terms must be full time at a CCC, unless you get special dispensation, and that usually refers to going to CCC part-time. The fact that your fall will not be at a CCC, will most likely void that TAG. Check with Davis, but that’s a red flag in my book. Re TAG or no TAG, your grades are good enough so I wouldn’t worry about it.

I assume you cannot do AR for the F course? Is there any way you can repeat it at a CCC? You are allowed to do that. You cannot repeat a C grade. They will not accept the retake. You’re stuck with the C.

Definitely, UCB will look favorably upon your going the extra nine yards to get things squared away. Your ECs look good. Truth be told, your current GPA (even with the F and C) are probably strong enough to get you into Berkeley - and they tend to put less weight on coursework from years ago. In other words, not sure throwing your life in upheaval for one course is totally necessary. Have you spoken with a rep at UCB? You should do that before you make any drastic moves.

@cayton can fill you in on philosophy at UCLA. Perhaps @goldencub for Berkeley, as he’s done a ton of research.

Thank you @lindyk8 . The main reason for me to transfer is actually about AI (artificial intelligence). In Davis, the course is offered every two years, but in Berkeley it is a core course. If I want to take that class in Davis, I probably have to do that in my senior year, and there’re not a lot of professors doing research on that field in Davis. I really want to get involved into undergraduate research. BTW, what do you think of UCLA’s computer science department in terms of AI.

@napapapa for CS classes in Davis, you just need to start working on your programming assignments early, and go to the office hours asking help from Sean. He is really helpful. If you are willing to spend 10-15 hours to program every week, ECS40/ECS60 should be really easy. It’s not hard at all, just time consuming. His tests are actually pretty easy if you program everything on you own instead of letting your partner carry you. Doing practice exams on his website os very helpful as well.

@goodmarks First off - if you studied philosophy at Temple, you may know my grandfather. Possibly.

Anyway -

assist.org seems like it’s down at the moment - which prerequisites are you talking about? CC philosophy classes generally transfer over to UCLA (with some exceptions, but I think that one can take courses at a CC to clear philos prerequisites at UCLA), but not to UCB. I haven’t heard of any CCC that offers UCB’s philosophy prerequisites (Introduction to Symbolic Logic, Ancient Philosophy, Modern Philosophy). Check assist.org to make sure.

I’m guessing that the courses you are taking will not articulate at Cal. Which is completely fine. Most philosophy transfers have to start fresh at Cal. Sometimes one can petition to have a prerequisite cleared if a course description matches its match at Cal, but don’t count on that.

You will definitely want to take a course in symbolic logic, if you haven’t already. Logic at CC seems to be much more relaxed than at Cal - you’ll probably be doing truth tables more than anything, and you will cover complicated ideas, but it won’t be nearly as difficult as it is at Cal.

I took Philos 12A this summer at Cal, and met 5 or 6 students who just transferred into the Philosophy major. They all transferred with approx. a 3.6 GPA. The acceptance rate in L&S Arts/Humanities is 42%. (source: http://students.berkeley.edu/files/admissions/12626_5.info_transadm.pdf ) - you’re in great shape.

Just make sure to complete all requirements, and write your personal statements well. I’m happy to look them over for you if you’d like another set of eyes. I’m sure you’ll get in.

@nikepupu I’ll definitely keep this in mind, thank you for the response.

@goldencub 42%??? no way thats unreal. I can bet my life that you’d get in… I’ve heard Haas is 5-6% and EECS is 7%. http://admissions.berkeley.edu/sites/default/files/docs/Transfer_Flier.pdf is more updated on that info.

@EECSProdigy Haas is 18%, if you leave out all the immediately ineligible - meaning they didn’t complete the required courses. Assuming you apply having completed the required work (which anyone should do), the acceptance is around 18.5%.

I want to tranfer as a math /physics major. I took 2/3 of my prerequisites at UCB during the summer. I got an A on math 1b,53 and physics 7a,and a A- on Physics 7b. Does it gives me any dvantage having taken most of my major prerequisites at ucb?

@EECSProdigy I was wondering where that flier was. Thanks, I couldn’t find it on the internet. 47.6% acceptance rate, then, for L&S Arts/Humanities. @goodmarks

@agustinfrpa Oh, yeah. That’s amazing man. That will def not go unnoticed

@goldencub Hey, a heads up: I just got an email from my philosophy professor over the summer, Sabzevary at Laney, and he just announced some new philosophy classes, and one of them is Modern Philosophy. The email said:

This brief note is to inform you that the Humanities-Philosophy Department is offering the following courses that are still open for enrollment for the Fall 2015 semester.
Do consider enrolling in one or more of them should your schedule permit.
Hum 40 (42555) - Religion of the world M 6-850
Phil 4 (43840)- Philosophy of Religion TTH 1-215
Phil 20B (44232)- Modern Philosophy Online
Phil 37 (42299)- Asian Philosophy TTH 1030-1145

philosophy of religion… holy crap that sounds hella boring lol.

Man, this application is aggravating. Limited to just 160 characters to explain practically everything (outside of the personal statements), if feels like I’m trying to explain my life on Twitter.

And being that I’m 29, how it uses the “Number of years after 12th (grade)” to explain dates is annoying.

The additional comments section after the personal statements says it can be used as an extention of the additional comments on the academic history section. It gives you 250 words.

Also, I think (hope) that the years after twelfth is asking how many years you participated in the activity. At least that’s how I did mine, I’m really not too sure honestly.

evilcow we turning up HARD if both of us make EECS. Just letting you know.

@briank82, that first comment section is just for a line. There’s another big one further down. It would be nice if they made that more clear.

Haha if I can even afford it, which I most likely won’t be able to. They’re pretty stingy (understandably) with the out of state financial aid. I’m in state for UIUC, which I would be pretty surprised if I don’t get into their ECE program up there. But then again my life motto is “if you’re not first, you’re last” so why settle for second place?

@boxandwhiskers Ah yeah, I took Intro to Phil with Amir and I loved it.

Phil 20B doesn’t articulate with Cal’s course - it’s actually called the “History of Modern European Philosophy”, and it’s only 3 units, not 4. That class briefly examines many people, while the course at Cal focuses more in depth on specific people. I actually took it in the spring. It doesn’t articulate as a major prerequisite, unfortunately.

There’s only one spot left in the Modern Phil class I’m trying to take at Cal, pretty much relying on the assumption that people will drop it. :-SS

yo yo goldencub i bet you 100% you are going to get in… I don’t know why you trying so hard. I think you should turn up hard; get on that tinder get some women and money.

Speaking from experience, don’t do that you’ll wind up with a kid. Although I was completely sober when I made all my bad life decisions, adding alcohol into the mix might change things…

I’m kidding stay in school kids.

Doesn’t hurt to go the extra mile. I also have to perform strong for graduate school. shrugs
