UC Berkeley 2016 Transfer Thread

@lindyk8 "that first comment section is just for a line. There’s another big one further down. It would be nice if they made that more clear. "

As in, the top line for job title (which allows like 15 characters)? Below that is to “Briefly describe your job responsibilities,” which allows only 160 characters. Not really much space to say your position and what you did.

@evilcow867 “Also, I think (hope) that the years after twelfth is asking how many years you participated in the activity. At least that’s how I did mine, I’m really not too sure honestly.”

Crap. Well, I don’t know. It says “During which high school years were you employed?” and I checked “After 12th,” and then “Number of years after 12th” pops up.

Can anyone say definitely? Are they asking how many years AFTER 12th grade you started, or how many years total you participated in a specific activity after 12th?

@briank82 I’m pretty sure they mean to convey your second interpretation, considering it says “During which high school years were you employed?” - they’re curious about how many years you have been employed, not how long it took for you to get into the labor force.

This is just my best guess, but considering the context of it all, the “how many years total you participated in a specific activity after 12th” interpretation seems to be the more plausible one of the bunch.

Has anyone on the board ever gotten in to UCB as a Colorado transfer student? Or is anyone familiar with their transfer policies with schools from Colorado?

I’m sure someone has gotten in from Colorado before. They don’t really have policies for out of state students. I’m applying out of state from Illinois, and I’ve just been taking my college’s equivalent of the courses listed on Assist.Org.

My advice is to do the same, apply, and then do a whole lot of praying. Out of state admissions are pretty rough.

@goldencub I took Intro to Phil with Amir during the summer on top of Soc 2 and it was INTENSE. He’s a great teacher, but my god…I think I listened to about 9 hours total of Conversations with God. His class definitely made me fall in love with philosophy though. I wish more CC teachers were like him.

I have to add I think Philosophy of Religion sounds fascinating. >:)

wait lindy what major are you doing? I don’t remember reading your stats

Pretty sure @lindyk8 is getting her Masters in Animal Husbandry.

@briank82 what exactly is animal husbandry? Like running a farm? B-)

@eecsprodigy, I’m a Berkeley alumnus with a kid at Berkeley. I help kids locally with transfers. (And my stats are off the chart, baby! )

@boxandwhiskers yeah. Definitely. I wrote a 20,000 word final paper. In an Intro class. Haha. Loved it, though.

dam lindy… wait are you on CC for fun or like do you do this professional counseling outside? Also what was your major @ berkeley?

^^^ My major was English and journalism. It’s partly for fun (sometimes…) but mainly as an ongoing learning experience. ~X(

Does anyone know how difficult it is to petition for articulation for a class? I took a logic and composition class that fulfills the second semester of english at my cc and also articulates to fulfill the second english course at UCLA, but at Cal it doesn’t articulate to fulfill ENG R1B

@csmajortom yeah, they gotta get a handle on these looney English course rules. Sometimes petitions work, sometimes they don’t. I’m not sure where you are in the process, but I assume you have not applied yet. If you are already accepted, petition. If not, I would suggest just taking another English course. Berkeley can be a harsh mistress, and you don’t want to not get in because of it.

@lindyk8 do you think they would reject me in spite of missing that course? or could i just call their admissions office and ask?

@csmajortom definitely call them. I assume you are applying this Nov? Can you take the course this fall or spring? I can’t tell you what they will say, but I can tell you I’ve seen Berkeley rescind people who end up missing one GE course, depending on circumstance. And this IS English, which is one of the most important requirements.

Obviously if they say yes, you’re OK, but if they equivocate in any way, I would take it. Also, maybe better than phoning is emailing because then you have it in writing if they say it is OK.

The other option is they let you take it next summer if you’re tight on space. The problem is I’m not sure they’d let you know if that was doable this early in the game.

Hey guys! I was wondering if I could get some input/see what you might think my chances are?
My intended major of study is Political Science
GPA: 3.82 (should be going up after this fall and spring semester)
Major GPA: not sure?
IGETC: I don’t think I filled out the certification yet but I know I am since I have an AA and will be getting a second one soon.
Speaking of which, I already earned one AA in Political Science (high honors) and will be getting a second AA in International Studies with an emphasis in international politics and diplomacy this fall which I also expect to be high honors.

EC/Other: have a high school multilingual seal on my diploma for having taken 4 yrs of Spanish, CSF seal on diploma (California scholarship federation), was secretary one year and VP another year for interact club, participated in CBYX (Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange). It’s an exchange program funded by the congress and German parliament that is awarded to 250 students a year, so I spent my first year out of high school in Germany. I have worked part time jobs since graduating HS, sometimes two at a time, currently working 39 hrs a week at a record store, been there for 1.5-2 years now. First generation college student. Took two years of German at CC, plus I speak German from having lived in Germany. I am also now a volunteer for AFS (a major organization for study abroad).

Thanks!!

@csmajortom please let us know what they tell you. I have a similar problem except my first semester English course does not articulate but the second one(R1B) does.

@grinsley, I was looking into AFS for my daughter. What do you think of the program?
