Cal is still in the process of releasing our degree information because the degree audit system is being replaced; however, I have finally received my official transfer credit breakdown and all of my units have transfered, including a Human Comm. course that I could not find in the UC curriculum. Apparently, Berkeley will give lower division credit to four year transfers for courses that are not directly transferable if the course satisfies specific criteria. If the course is not “Advanced Knitting,” the units may still transfer even if the course itself is not comparable or cannot be used to satisfy requirements.
Those courses did not matter to me because I had AP credit to ensure that I meet the minimum, but I’ve read many posts that share related concerns. Don’t assume that you will receive general credit for questionable courses in order to meet the minimum, but don’t assume that you will lose the credit and overcompensate. If you have more than the minimum, submit that application regardless because you don’t know that they will not offer general credit for that dance course that you took. In general, try to find that sweet spot between 60 and 70 that will prevent you from crossing either line.
Anyway, best of luck everyone. Every year, everyone on the boards waits patiently for a brutal rejection, but the truth is that the fact that we spend our time on these boards is proof that we are all more determined nerds than most.

Prereqs: Done last year (4.0 Major GPA)
IGETC: 1 class left to do during spring semester (Geography)
ECs: A couple of internships at small nearby companies, working part-time during the last 6 months, fraternity, co-founder and treasurer of a club on campus.
Essays: Very good, talked about moving to the US and adjusting to a new life as a kid.
Applied: UCB, UCSB, UCSD, UCLA
So today I received an email from UC Berkeley Admissions saying that they received my application, along with login info for the student portal, MAP@Berkeley.
Did anyone else receive a similar email? I’m mainly asking because on their official FAQ, they say that freshman applicants will be contacted in December, while transfer applicants will be contacted in January? Just a little confused…
@SoCalNewbie yes i got the email too. i was confused about that as well… since we just got contacted… what is the other contact in january for? i got a similar email from uc irvine so i think it’s probably just one of those general “we got your application” things.
@annbern I know that everyone gets them, I just thought it was weird how early they sent them out, about an entire month early
@jjcc77 LOL I submitted my application around 3 in the morning November 30.
@otoribashi Right? What’s weirder is that when I logged into the MAP@Berkeley, it said that my application is “currently under review”, posted date 12/04, which isn’t true because we haven’t even sent in our fall grades. Maybe they’re just on top of their review game this year?
Question - I might end up with a B in English after taking the final, bringing my GPA down from a 4.0 to a 3.83. How bad is this for a poli sci major? I know the admit GPA range is 3.64-4 for political science @ Cal, but considering I have little else on my application besides what would have been a 4.0, I’m a little worried.
Major: Chemical and Nuclear Engineering Joint Major
GPA: 3.95
Major GPA: 4.0 ( with one w in an egnlish class which I retook this fall and got an A in)
Prereqs: Finished!, including a strongly recommended engineering course, also had AP scores which got me past Calc 1 and Calc 2
IGETC: done
ECS: College swim team, AMATYC school winner (CC math exam), Engineering Club, Math Club, MESA, LIfeguard, swim team coach, Trumpet player for 9 years (all state, all district honor bands, etc.)
Essays: 9/10, talked about being an italian immigrant to this country, and how my identity was shaped by the two countries I grew up
Applied to: UCLA, UCI (tag), UCB, and UCSD
chance me?
@annbern A friend of mine was admitted as a PoliSci major with a 3.5. Most of the admits for PoliSci (or social sciences generally) seem to be in the 3.7-3.75 range.
@aateichman I’m calling BS on your profile. No CCC offers all of the pre-reqs for the CS61 ABC series. Almost every CC offers the CS61B recommended and very few offer the CS61C recommended. With the said no CCC offers the CS61A course. The only CCC that offers classes that pair with CS61AB is DVC and even if you are there they still do not offer the CS61A course. I don’t understand why you feel the need to lie on this forum and it seems like you’re trying to intimidate others from applying to EECS so that you have a better chance at getting in.
How do you compare to other EECS applicants? My lab partner this semester has the exact same profile as you, grades, overcoming life trouble, tech internship, etc. She invented a technology that is used to detect cancer with cell phones, and has a letter of recommendation from one of the big 5 tech firms’ CTO’s. I don’t think you stand a chance compared to her.
@eel314 sounds like you’re bsing too. I know the person that invented technology that is used to detect cancer with cell phones and she’s finished with college. I dont understand why you feel the need to lie in a response to someone’s genuine question.
Not to also mention, he could’ve easily went to another community college to complete the alleged “no ccc offers all of the pre reqs.”
@ezcal11 No, I’m not bsing about my lab partner applying for EECS transfer and having those amazing accomplishments. Also, there was no question stated and I was simply refuting that he has finished up those recommended courses because it is simply impossible to finish all pre-reqs for the CS61 series through any CCC because there is no CCC that offer the CS61A equivalent, period. Go do the research yourself before accuse me of lying.
Also, don’t think that making multiple new accounts is going to convince anyone.
@eel314 Laney college offers a 61A equivalent. I did my research too I wish your lab partner the best of luck, but a letter of recommendation won’t be of any use for UC applications.
@goldencub Thanks for the reassurance! I ended up getting an A in my English class lol, so the worry was all for naught! Was your friend involved in extracurricular activities?
