UC Berkeley 2017 Transfer Thread

@mangobby I was one of the summer session people, and mine is up now.

My academic profile also says freshman. I’m assuming it will say that until our transcripts are verified.

My financial aid is up, and my academic career no longer says that I’m a summer visitor student (I had summer session issue before).

Ugh mines still not up

@amunroeee I’m sure they’re rolling it out, it will be up soon. Unfortunately I somehow clicked that my preferred name was my maiden name I haven’t used in 11 years so I have to go in person to fix that - agh!

@smrider29 I had the same problem with my CalNet email, you can email them at bconnect@berkeley.edu and they’ll fix it for you.

can someone please tell me what the bridge program is? I got an invite for it…

Does anyone see their financial aid for summer 2017? I registered for summer courses (6 units) and filled out 2016-2017 FAFSA. “My Finances” tab only shows financial aid for Fall 2017 - Spring 2018.

@kors03 Did you receive an email from them with your transportation information? That’s how you they let you know you’ve been selected for the program (they have limited space and it’s first-come, first-serve).

So basically it’s a weekend-long program focused on convincing admitted students to SIR to Berkeley. They have workshops, campus tours, etc. It seems like a really fun program and I can’t wait to fly up to Berkeley this Friday!

@elcaminocs
No and I’m also enrolled in summer. I will be asking about that when I go up this weekend.

@LandUseLaw Thank you for the reply, can you tag me in this thread when you get a solution to financial aid for summer 2017?

Hello all, I was on the CalCentral Facebook page (look up their page) and I noticed that they had warned against potential phishing scams that were being emailed to bConnected users:

https://www.fac eboo k.com/ BerkeleyCalCentral
"A phishing attempted is being reported by bConnected users.

If you receive an unexpected invitation to view a shared document, please don’t click. (example below).

Campus IT is investigating the issue."

When I noticed a similar email that was sent to me earlier today, I was really confused for a few reasons:

  1. the sender was supposedly a counselor from our local high school (I’m in CC, so this was weird to get?)
  2. the “hhhhhhhhhh…” included in the recipient line was off-putting.

Unfortunately I didn’t see CalCentral’s warning on Facebook, so I tried to open the document is was trying to send me but all that would happen is that it would load forever just to have an error page pop up. I’m hoping (seriously hoping) no damage was done, but if we could get the word out to other bConnect students NOT to open these emails, that’d be great. I would hate for anyone’s private information to be stolen. Thanks.

Hi! So I have a question and thought I’d see if I could get it sorted out here. So I have been admitted to Berkeley for Fall 2017 as an English Major and as I have been going through my courses listed in my admissions contract and checking with Assist I have realized that one of the classes I am taking (Japanese 2) which was a pre-req for other schools English departments, is not required for the English major at Berkeley. So, once I realized this, I emailed my admissions counselor who essentially said that I don’t need the course since I’ve already completed IGETC so she said I could continue taking it, or opt to drop if I’d like. I can’t drop because it’s too late in the semester so I asked if I were to receive a ‘NP’ since that doesn’t affect my 3.0 GPA whatsoever, if my admission would still be fine. She got back to me and said that my admissions would not be in jeopardy and would be fine if I am to receive a ‘NP’ this semester. SO NOW! My question is do you guys think I need to input anything like this in my Undergraduate Admissions Update (seeing as I don’t know if I’m going to pass) or to just leave it and not worry about it considering my admissions counselor already told me it would not affect my admission. Thanks!

Anyone try to apply for housing and the only option available is summer housing?

I can finally see my financial aid information! Did anyone else get scholarships?

Congratulations to everyone who was admitted! I skimmed a few pages of this threads and thought I’d answer a few questions.

  1. Double Majoring - Those who are considering double majoring need to email the departments of the major that was NOT listed on their application. Major advisers get a list of students who applied under a major in their department. If you did not apply under that major, you are not on that list! This means that you will not be notified about major specific deadlines and information. Berkeley asked potential Political Science majors to email the department their old course syllabi to get approval for major requirements in May. I did not discover this until December! Otherwise, the double major application process was extremely easy.
  2. Major Change: Most should be aware that admits are admitted to the college in most cases rather than the major. With the exception of Computer Science in LS College and a hand full of other majors, you will never be asked the major that you applied under. If you are really that scared of advisers thinking that you tried to game the system, then you can simply say that you plan to double major and intend to declare the new major first. But unless the department has a rule against major changes or double majors on their website (Computer Science), you can switch into any major that you are qualified to declare, impacted or otherwise.
  3. Fall Classes: You will be left with the scraps for fall enrollment. It is potentially going to be even worse this year because students can now enroll in 13.5 units during Phase I, which has already started for upper division students, rather than the old 10.5. HOWEVER! You are going to have plenty of time to finish a single or double major over these next two years. Political science is among the most impacted departments, and some classes are already full. I only took one political science course my first semester, yet I could graduate in three semesters if I wanted to. Berkeley summer sessions are extremely well-organized. There are so many classes for impacted majors and multiple sessions to work with. Ultimately, you will probably not get your dream schedule for the fall, but you have to remember that you will be a high priority student for every semester that follows.
  4. Cal Central is a brand new system and the administration is still implementing new features. Do not read into the information on My Academics. It will say freshman, then it will change undeclared upper division, then eventually, much, much later, it will say the proper major and year. It is a work in progress. It is not a riddle for you to solve. It does not reflect the records of the admissions department. If something seems wildly wrong, then email then. Otherwise, do not give it much thought.
  5. Feel free to ask questions about other issues or the environment on campus or the city. Concerning the politics, I live off-campus and I have only witnessed two protest during the day on campus. The overwhelming majority have occurred at night. Truthfully, as a member of multiple minority groups and political science major, it is pretty shameful that I have not been more active. But the point is that I am very political, yet I have to discover that these protests even occurred after the fact. You will be oblivious to most of these events and they have been sensationalized by right-activists on social media. I am also a research assistant and can give advise about research, fun courses/minors, etc.

@maluminati Is the admissions counselor working for your CC or UCB? This is not a question that a non-Berkeley counselor should feel that confident answering. UCB admission counselors have the authority to make their own decision on these issues and major department advisors have additional independent authority. Anytime you want approval for decisions such as this, you have to go to the decision makers because they can honestly make whatever decisions they feel are appropriate.

If NP means No Pass, then I would strongly advise against receiving that grade regardless. NP might not affect GPA at certain CCs, but it will convert to an F at most universities and essentially all graduate schools. All transfers start with a new Berkeley GPA, but the GPA for your complete undergraduate degree will include all undergraduate coursework. If you can pass the class, even if it will be more stress during finals week, pass the class.

Does summer schedule change affect my admission?
I was planning on participating in research instead, but I originally had two courses as planned on my application.
Those courses are not like prereq for admission, and I have more than 60 transferable credit, but I am scared if it can affect my admission.
Thanks

@calyoooo It shouldn’t matter, but it would only take a few minutes to email them so that you have their approval on record.

@TheVisionary I was told it would be fine directly from my Berkeley admissions councilor. Also, if we start at Berkeley (or any UC for that matter) with a clean GPA where exactly will my NP play in to that? I’m just thinking because essentially my Undergraduate CC GPA would be one thing (which wouldn’t be affected by the NP) and my UCB coursework would be another (also not affected by my NP grade). I feel like I sound rude in this I’m not trying too I’m sorry! I’m just wondering about all this (and low-key really don’t want to finish this class lol) so thank you for taking the time to try and answer my questions!

@TrasnferStudent Yes, I am seriously considering going. UCSD was my top choice but I am also considering UCI and UCB.

Dang am I the only one who still can’t see their financial aid?
Also still haven’t received official invite to bridges lol
