UC Berkeley 2017 Transfer Thread

@AgentXJP i looked at assistbut for some odd reason they don"t have a uc davis correlation with uc berkeley ethnic study major. I tried using the community college to uc berkeley correlation and there was nothing there

They don’t have UC-UC correlation. You need to look at the required courses UC-CC and try your best to match them.

I just looked. There are no matching courses. So get letter of reciprocity from your current UC (completion of all gen ed courses) and that’s really all you need to do. You could take an ethnic studies course or two in your current UC gen ed list (if they have any) to show berkeley your interest in the subject.

not sure if i posted this here yet (i posted in ucla thread so some of you may have seen it)

originally stated on my app that i wasn’t going to complete IGETC and in the additional comments for the coursework section i wrote that i would have partial IGETC certification.

but now ill be finishing up IGETC in january during winter intercession

should i email admissions to update that or just edit it during the Transfer Application Upgrade? will i have a chance of upgrading the “additional comments” section when it opens? (not the additional comments after the essays… the small one that comes when you review your coursework and all of that)

and how competitive is it to get in for physics? i know it ranks #1 in physics a lot, so does that make it more competitive?

ill have all of the major requirements completed and even all of the recommended chemistry classes (except for the gen chem 2 lab). ill even be taking a programming course (it’s not required but it’s “recommended”) and ill have completed 2 years of a foreign language (and it’s a difficult language like chinese, not spanish even though i didn’t need it because i took and passed the AP spanish test in high school). my overall GPA is a 3.5 though… but my grades in physics are all As and honestly the foreign language and math might be what brought my GPA down a bit so i don’t know if they’ll take that into consideration (took a risk to pursue a difficult intellectual hobbies (foreign language) even though it brought down GPA. lowest grade ive gotten in that language is a B btw so it’s not as if i am flat out doing badly in it). my math grades show an amazing upward trend.

also a minority and first generation college student, low income. female.

Junior transfer into Business School.

I have all the prerequisites except I received a 3 on my calculus BC exam in high school. That allowed me skip calculus 1 and 2 in college and I took engineering calculus 3. I know a 3 on calc BC at UCB only counts for calc 1. Do you think that will affect me?

-California resident and went to a great California high school.

-Spent 2 years at The Ohio State University as an accounting major.

-GPA: 3.7 (4.0 for all business courses)
-Credit hours: 60.5 semester credit hours (+ 21.5 AP credit hours, 91.5 total)
- all GEs
-all math and science classes
- will have completed all non major business courses

-A few of ECs including treasurer of one of the largest and most unique student organizations.

-A summer business rotational internship

@otoribashi You basically fit the profile of UCB TAP applicants, such that they are all either low-income, minorities, and/or first-generation college students. I believe this would give you a significant advantage in admission.

Anyways, it always doesn’t hurt to email admissions asking to update it. There’s no harm. If you visit this link: https://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/infocenter/transfers-major

You will see a bunch of statistics regarding your major and what school. I believe this will be of great use to you. The physics major seems to have an average acceptance rate of 27-30%. It seems like the 25th percentile of the average admitted GPA becomes higher each year, however. Before, it was around the 3.5-3.6 range, but it seems to be converging towards a 3.8 now.

Your GPA is quite much lower than the 25th percentile, but you claim that you are getting good grades in your technical courses, so perhaps that’ll be a good thing.

Just remember that the officers will look at you holistically and so you may have a good chance!

@rootcause is that TAP program available for students once they transfer and enroll at berkeley or is it just during community college? i think our school has it (it’s like an honors program i think?) but i never participated in it… (i might be confusing it with something else though lol)

thank you for your response, it makes me less stressed to know i may have a shot! i hope i can maintain the upward trend and continue my A-streak in my physics courses!

@otoribashi The TAP program is available during community college. For Berkeley, it’s a non-honors type of thing and people usually receive personal help on their applications and what classes to take, etc. Here’s their page: http://cep.berkeley.edu/transfer-alliance-project-tap

I participated in it and my counselor helped boost my personal statements to a 9/10! Good luck with future physics courses

Hey guys! I’m a current CCC student applying to UC Berkeley for Fall 2017.

Current major: Computer Science
Applying to: Computer Science (Letters & Science)
Units: 46 completed, 15 planned for spring 2017
Current GPA: 4.0
IGETC: Completed by Spring 2017

Extra-Curricular: I have volunteered as a math tutor at my community college for the last two semesters now, plan to continue this coming spring semester.
I’ve also for the past 3 years volunteered as the media and systems director at my local church.
I’m also a member of the Science and Engineering Club at my community college.

@otoribashi I don’t know your background, but I do want to point out if you are asian you are not a minority and rightfully so. Berkeley is 40% Asian. Berkeley uses the term underrepresented to refer to groups that are, well, underrepresented on campus. But TAP is also intended for low income people no matter their background and first generation college students of any background. It’s mostly just like having a personal counselor.

As long as you are ONE of these you qualify: minority, low income, first gen

@aateichman I stand corrected then! are you applying EECS?

Veterans are part of TAP as well. I think anyone who is persuasive enough could get in. The program is helpful in a few ways but isn’t likely to drastically increase one’s chances on its own.

Guys, I were taking Multivariable Calculus/Linear Algebra/Differential Equations this fall semester (I thought I can handle it, but it was extremely hard), and I end up with all Bs, and my gpa is 3.7 down from 4.0, and I am applying for Statistics for Berkeley, am I doomed? Thanks for help !!!

Hi everyone. I just have a question. I am like having almost 35 credits from AP score, so this question would be very important to be answered. When I submitted my UC application it only counted my coursework from college without my AP scores, so it says I am ineligible for admission. However, when I used UC TAP to count my credit, it does count my AP scores as well. I submitted my application anyway.
Can someone tell me if my AP scores count or not?

@quanaucb Your GPA is still within the 25th-75th percentile for accepted GPAs. You’ll be fine, as long as the rest of your profile is competitive (essays, ECs, etc).

@mywifeisUM They should, but you should check whether or not you got a 4 or higher on the exams. A 4 is like the minimum that they use. Hopefully, you inputted all of your AP scores at a 3 or higher (in case you’re using IGETC) under the appropriate section. If you did that, then they should know that you have a lot of AP credit.

If you made a note of your AP scores after inputting all the academic record stuff on the College Credit section, then they’ll take that into consideration. Making a note about this situation under the additional comments wouldn’t have hurt either. If you didn’t make note of this under the sections where it had a blank box for you to type something in, then I would e-mail them.

@TheLongRun Thank you for your reply.
really? 4 is the minimum they use?
I am only applying to Bereley Engineering and I don’t think IGETC applies to Engineering applicant.
What I used is Berkeley Engineering AP credit policy to estimate how much AP credit I would have. Is it not a right way to do it?
It says 3 on Chem AP exam gives me credit for Chem1A/L.

Chance me?
Major: Applied Mathematics
GPA: 3.93 (Funny enough, my only B was in Precalculus 1 before I decided to major in math)
Major GPA: 4.0
Units: 65 semester units (Completed thus far: Calculus through Multivariable, Linear Algebra, Calculus based Physics 1 (of 4), and IGETC required courses)
Prerequisites: Finished (Differential Equations, Discrete Math, and Physics 2 will be completed Spring 2017)
IGETC: Complete
ECS: mathematical independent study/research,math tutor at school’s success center, Planned Parenthood volunteer, UCLA hospital intern, Coburn Outreach program (playing music at local at risk middle schools), Lifeguard, Martial Arts (State/National finalist), Tournament of Roses Honor Band, New York Summer Music Festival performer, and held leadership role in high school music department.
Essays: Good
Applied to: UCLA, UCB, UCSD, UC Davis, UCI (TAG successfully), UC Riverside, UCSB, UC Santa Cruz, and Cal Poly Pomona (Accepted)
Negative aspect of my application: I have a series of W’s at a Music School that I attended for 3 months and then went back home to take and drop a few random courses early on in the semester at my community college in the attempt to figure my life out. I also had W’s in two classes in my Spring 2016 semester due to an emergency surgery. I was able to finish my harder classes; I just had to drop EMT and film history to focus on a fast paced math course (Precalculus 2 and Calculus 1 in one semester), anthropology, anthropology lab, and history. I explained the circumstances in my application.

Hey everyone! I just submitted my app to UCB and wanted to share stats. Mostly just looking to join others anxiously awaiting the decision, fingers crossed to us all!

Major: Political Science
Overall GPA: 3.78
Transferable GPA: 3.86
Major GPA: 3.9

Prerequisites: all major prerequisites will be complete Spring 2017. IGETC complete Spring 2017.
ECs: not as strong as I’d like. Historian of Alpha Gamma Sigma, unpaid intern with local legal assistance foundation (career related). Worked entire way through school so far.
Background: first gen college student, financially independent since 17. Will be married by the start of the school year.

My essays are pretty strong. I have a pretty complex background and I was able to use that to discuss how far I’ve come, and how my obstacles have created my strength.

Also applied UCI, UCLA, UCSD

Thanks everyone! Good luck!

Hey guys, I’m new here and I am also transferring for next Fall. It would be lovely if I could be chanced.

Out of state, international student,jJunior transfer from a community college (WA state).
Major: Political Science
GPA: 3.96
ECs: Probably the worse aspect of my application; all were done in high school (school band, varsity basketball team, etc.) beside hosting events with PTK.
Personal statements: Honestly, I don’t know… They are decent, I guess…

I’m sorry if my post was a little vague.

Thanks in advance, guys.
