UC Berkeley 2017 Transfer Thread

@Moshe1010 Thanks! The bad semester was actually spring 2016, so I was able to explain the situation in my additional comments section. I went on to receive a 4.0 in 12 units of summer classes and in 17 units during the fall. I hope that proved that I’m capable! I didn’t retake the courses because they weren’t relevant, so I guess that’s what I’m worried about. I didn’t have time because I had to get through major and IGETC courses. But according to what you said, it shouldn’t really factor into it, right? Thanks!!

Has anyone gotten an email about scholarships? I applied last year (but had to withdraw my app because of family circumstances), and I received an alumni scholarship application in January. My GPA, essays, and activities are better this year, but I haven’t received anything. Kind of freakin’ out. I heard from my dean that he’d written a LOR for a UCB transfer applicant last month… Maybe it was a part of the major specific reqs? Or maybe he got the schools mixed up? He writes a substantial amount of LOR. I’m applying to Letters, so I dunno… Anyway, let me know if you’ve gotten anything yet! :slight_smile:

Chance me? :frowning: Worried about my chances for the engineering school. I am a OOS ~> CCC ~> UC transfer. (I will be considered in state and a CCC Transfer).

Major: Engineering Math & Statistics
Transferable GPA: 3.69/4.0
Schools I’ve attended: CUNY: New York City College of Technology (CUNY: NYCCT), Moorpark College, Evergreen Valley College (EVC; Currently attending Evergreen Valley College)

ECs (Won’t go into Detail for these it would be a bit much to explain; however I will list a general overview of my ECs):

-Member of Phi Theta Kappa
-NASA/California Space Grant Consortium Award of Excellence
-EVC Honors’ Institute Membership
-CUNY: NYCCT Dean’s List
-Member in a minority outreach program for African Americans on EVC campus

-NASA/California Space Grant Consortium intern. Me and my team did research in Microcomputers and Robotics on EVC campus.
-EVC Math Tutor; eligible to tutor Calc 1 and Calc 2 in the Math Resource Center. (Can’t go any higher because they don’t allow it at this center)
-EVC Physics Tutor; eligible to tutor the first and second levels of Calculus Based Physics at the Math Resource Center.
-EVC Veterans’ Tutor; eligible to tutor all levels of mathematics (Calc 1, 2, 3, Linear Alg, Diff Eqs) in the veterans center separately
-CUNY: NYCCT Emerging Scholar; did research in Chaos Theory.
-CUNY: NYCCT Honors’ Scholar; did research in Thermodynamics.
-Founding Secretary of the Comp Sci Club on EVC campus.

-Secretary of the Honors Club for Fall 2016 - Spring 2017

Honor’s Designation on the following courses:

PHYS 1441: Physics 1.3 (Completed; First Semester of Calculus Based Physics)
COMSC 75: Computer Science I (Completed)
COMSC 76: Computer Science II (In Progress; equivalent to COMPSCI 61B)

Other:

I’ve explained my grade dip in my application which was due to family related circumstances. At CUNY: NYCCT I had a 3.98 GPA, at Moorpark College I had a 2.93 GPA and my GPA at EVC atm is 3.727.

By the time I transfer I will have completed two “additional recommended coursework”. The classes that I will have completed are MATH 55 and COMPSCI 61B. Currently COMPSCI 61B is in progress.

Also forgot to mention I only had one semester at moorpark college, 2 semesters and a summer session at CUNY: NYCCT and 4 semesters at EVC.

Chance me? I’m an in-state CC student in So-Cal.

Major: Political Science
GPA: 3.97
Major GPA: 4.0
Applied: UCD, UCSD, UCLA, UCB
Accepted: UCD (TAG)

Major Pre-Req: all done
IGETC: one last requirement remaining (science with lab) completed by the Spring
AP Tests: Lang (4), Lit (4), Human Geo (5)

ECs:
President/Vice President’s List
Phi Theta Kappa member
Internship with my local State Senator (6 months)
Political Organizing Internship with AFT (9 months)
Volunteering with local campaigns on my own time

Essays:
Pretty good I think. I had really direct examples for the “leadership” and “best quality” essays that stemmed from my internships with a California State Senator as well as the political organizing leg of a teacher’s union. My personal statement highlighted my academics (my strong suit) and my involvement in real political work to compliment my major.

I’m worried though because in one essay I talked about my involvement in Model UN in high school and how that drove me to pursue my major, even though I haven’t continued the activity into college (not offered at my CC, though I graduated in 2015 if that makes a difference. Very close to high school). Do you think that will hurt my chances?

Does anyone know that any chance to get in UCB without IGECT? I don’t have those 2 English class, but i have Ielts 7.0.

@caliguy925 just out of curiosity, how did you start conducting your research? I’m interested in researching either brain activity or orthopedic related injuries and was wondering if you could give me an idea of how you began your research.

@snake941 are you applying In State or Out of State? Not completing IGETC makes your chances pretty slim honestly.

Can someone remind me what was on the Berkeley MAP update? I vaguely remember filling a form out on MAP which didn’t take long to complete and was similar to the UC Transfer Academic Update.

@locampo ,

It was the Berkeley version of the “TAU”. It was due some time ago.

It essentially asked the same questions as the UC TAU, correct? Like Fall 2016 grades and PL and IP courses etc.

@locampo

Yeah, and there was another form that I think asked if we completed the TAU on the actual application. I don’t quite remember but yeah.

The berkeley one asked for what you listed, along with pre reqs that you have taken in your college for the major you have chosen.

Chance me?

Essays:

Very Strong. I chose the “leadership”, “academic barrier”, and “community building” topics. I used examples from tutoring for community building and making my college campus a better place by being the first ever “business tutor” on campus in its history. Examples for leadership come from organizing a college trip for first-generation students that allowed them to visit universities that we don’t travel to. Academic Barrier came from my low-income background (don’t want to go into specifics).

Had my essays reviewed by four English professors, my PTK coordinator, a political science professor, my academic counselor, a transfer specialist on campus, and my TAP (Transfer Alliance Project) contact. All gave me a thumbs up.

Haas Essay:

Strong as well. Don’t want to go into specifics (PM if you want to know more), but I used a very honest and relatable example. Had it reviewed by a transfer specialist, my academic counselor, and my TAP contact. All gave me a thumbs up!

Hey @jonathaanv I’d say you have a solid chance at admissions with those stats. :slight_smile: care to chance me back?

@BoredEngineer just curious, why not apply to UCI/UCSB? They are much higher ranked than UCSC.

@justinmega1

Wanted to stay close to my area is all. I only applied for San Diego because I wanted to apply for a mid tier uc.

@BoredEngineer hope so man, the wait until April is going to kill me as well.

I think your EC’s are very impressive and will go a long ways in helping you stand out. I’m sure you used a couple to write your essays which helps them know you aren’t just a “school guy.” In terms of GPA, I wouldn’t sweat it too much if you really made an effort to write strong personal insight responses. Berkeley does a good job of considering everything that their applicants went through, so I’d say your personal statements will ultimately make or break your application for Cal. If you feel good about those, then you should feel good about your application.

@jonathaanv

Hey thanks! Well guess I don’t have much to worry about then. I was just concerned because I see all these future cal engineers with 4.0s and I’m just here with a measly 3.69.

@BoredEngineer no problem, also take into consideration your grade trends and unit load. If you have a “reason” for not preforming the best, those things can sway a decision in your favor. I saw you had family issues so they’ll take note of that.

4.0s also don’t tell the whole story, especially at cal which is notorious for rejecting even the most qualified of students. It’s truly a lottery situation. Every year is different and every applicant is different.
