UC Berkeley 2017 Transfer Thread

@jonathaanv Accounting isn’t a pre-req for Haas.

@briank82 Yeah I noticed that I forgot to fix that when I posted this. I use the same “chance me” for multiple threads lol.

@RICOLAA I’m in the same boat as you and a former service number. Have you taken the Calc sequence yet?

Hey guys- I’m a current senior at Cal who transferred. Let me know if you have any questions! I won’t pretend to be an expert, but I’d be happy to try to help. I’m looking for distractions as I am currently waiting on grad school decisions and putting off writing my senior thesis for my undergraduate degree :smiley:

@SWEEP1989

Chance me? :slight_smile:

While I have zero credibility to chance you for EMS, your stats looks pretty good! Your GPA may be a little lower than other applicants, but you said you explained. Your experience and involvement looks awesome, and from what I know that goes just as far as GPA in your intended major. Also, if you kept your math and science grades strong and saw your GPA suffer from performance in other classes, I think that would strengthen your app. With a strong personal statement, I think your chances are good.

That being said, Cal’s admission process is a complete mystery, as I’m sure you know. Best of luck and let me know if there’s any other questions I can help with!

@SWEEP1989

Thanks! I have one question. Can I double major in CS at the other college in cal along with doing my engineering math and stats major?

I’m not 100% sure about that, but with semester and unit caps that are stringent on transfers, look into it very closely. I would highly recommend a minor in CS and field experience (internships, research, etc).

Chance me please!

CCC Student
GPA: 3.2
Major: Economics
TAP: Complete
IGETC: Complete

All criticism and advice appreciated!

@Joekingz

Your GPA is pretty low and I’m not even sure if UC Berkeley takes students with GPAs that low. Do you have a valid excuse for the GPA that you put on your application? I hope this doesn’t scare you; I wasn’t sure how else to say it >___<’

@“Bored Engineer” Berkeley takes students with even lower GPAs. Berkeley accepted a 3.0 transfer that had outstanding personal statements that showed really unusual drive. Berkeley also understands that grades correlate more strongly with income, opportunities, resources, and how privileged your upbringing was rather than raw potential or intelligence, so Berkeley likes to take a holistic approach and your GPA is never the end-all-be-all. A lower GPA can only hurt you and never help you, and it’s probably statistically rare for anyone with below a 3.5 to ever get in, but it does happen.

@AgentXJP

Oh I had no idea. I thought there was a requirement that stated that GPAs for incoming transfer had to be atleast 3.5. Sorry about that.

@BoredEngineer @Joekingz

I partially agree with Engineer. That is an extremely low GPA for econ at UCB, no getting around it. OP is part of TAP, which will help, but as to how much, that is an unknown. (Hopefully, a lot!) Additionally, I would assume a responsible UCB TAP advisor would have steered OP away from a major that was considered a long reach, so that’s another good sign that it’s doable. And those are great ECs!

Can anyone chance me?
Sadly not CCC student

GPA: 4.0/4.0
School I am at: University of Michigan for Computer Science Engineering.
Some people might ask me why I am trying to transfer. I am an international student and in terms of global or international engineering school ranking in pretty much every website, reputation gap is quite noticeable, at least in my country people think so. I am also planning on working back in my country, so why not give a shot for transfer?
Obviously wasn’t accepted as freshman. Would have gone if I got in.lol.
Major: Engineering Mathematics and Statistics
applying for same major again.
credits: about 35 from AP scores, and will complete about 34 credit by the end of the year from UMICH, and 6 credit from community college. Technically it is my first year.
I will have completed all of lower division requirement for major, not just prereq for admission. I mean all recommended courses will be done as well by end of winter semester
ECS: Formula SAE, and in some computer science research mainly.
Have a lot of activity from high school.

Reason for that major? I would like to focus more on numerical analysis and data analysis and I found this major’s curriculum to support my interest.
Personal statement: I think I explained reason for wanting to do this major well with connection to couple research projects I have done. Only applying to berkeley, so I could be more specific.
Other: wanna live in California!!!

In case people misunderstand. At UMICH winter semester is pretty much same as other school’s spring semester except end like maybe about 2 weeks earlier.
Thank you guys for reading

Hey @calyoooo

I’d say your chance is strong but being out of state and international supposedly are huge strikes against you so it’s a bit of a toss up. You have good enough ECs and their approach is holistic. I’m also applying to the same major! :slight_smile: I hope you get in as your stats are nearly perfect!

Care to chance me back?

@BoredEngineer Thanks for the feedback and good to hear applying for same major.
To me, your academics is just about average applicant considering it is engineering.
However, it looks like your extracurricular is unbellivable as college student.
I believe most of students, including me, will not have much extracurricular as college student. So, I believe some of your ECs in your personal statement would have been a huge boost.
Overall, I believe you have a great chance to get accepted with your ECs combined.
Hope you get in as well. Maybe we will be classmates at Berkeley next year!!!

@calyoooo

Hey thanks! Yeah I worked insanely hard in college and I wanted to turn everything around. hope to see you next year as well :slight_smile:

Could you chance me? I’m starting to feel anxious as the notification date comes up and an outside opinion would really help

Major: Economics
Applied to: School of L&S
GPA: 4.0
Igetc: Cleared by this spring
Credits: 60

ECs: Not many, except for smaller stuff like gardening and ROTC that happened back in high school. My strongest suit in my application was probably my essays, as I talked about the hard knock life and etc. I feel like I might’ve stood out because I prominently featured that I left high school 2 years early and have just been attending a CCC since. One caveat in my application is the possibility I might not have 60 credits, depending on how UCB accepts my 6-unit precal course (I’ve heard, though not from clear reasonable sources, that the UC system knocks a credit or two off of precal math courses that are college algebra and college trig combination because trig is considered remedial).

@StrawberryWaffle

I think you should check out assist or your CCC IGETC rubric. I took College Algebra and Trig separately for 4 credits each. My trig course is not UC transferable or part of the transferable credits but I had to take it as a pre req for Calc I.
