Like UCSC hasn’t even notified me yet
Hey Guys/Gals, I know this is kinda pointless but I need this to calm my nerves lol, so I would greatly appreciate if any of you would chance me, Ill try and chance back if you wish.
Intercampus Transfer from another UC
Major: LS CS
GPA: 3.78, Major GPA: 3.83(in major prereq classes), although my major GPA increases if you include other CS classes I’ve taken.
Extracurriculars/Awards: Pretty Good I would say, Most of them are major related, but 2/3 of them are from HS, and 1/3 are from College.
Essays: I would also say they’re pretty good, I showed them to a few friends and they all said they were good, I spent a whole month working on them full time during winter break.
IGETC: No, not from a CCC
Major Prereqs: All Completed.
Points I’m worried about:
I’m applying from another UC, which reduces my chances I heard as Berkeley gives preference to CCC. My ECs mostly being from HS, I don’t know whether this matters or not, but I wish I’d put more stuff I’ve done in college.
Points that I think will help me: Upward grade trends: I received straight As and A+s last Fall, My essays.
Appreciate any Feedback! especially on how much my status as an intercampus transfer will hurt my chances.
I saw and completed the one update due Jan 31st but I didn’t see the other one that was apparently for engineering students due the same date. My counselor contacted Berkeley and they were noncommittal about reviewing my application. So, I may be out of luck. Like Briank82 said, there is a lot of competition out there.
@lexluther96 UCSC is supposed to post acceptances the 17th.
@UCLAorUCBTRNSFR Your HS ECs/Awards are not considered at all when the admissions officers are reviewing your application. Therefore, those ECs/Awards should be extremely stacked with college stuff. The fact that you’re a UC-UC transfer gives you a very small chance IMO, considering how LSCS is already extremely hard to be admitted to in the first place.
Too nervous…
Can anyone chance me critically?
Thank you in advance guys and good luck to you all crews.
CCC student
Major: EECS
UC GPA: 3.988 (Got A- on GE on the first quarter)
Major GPA: 4.00
UC transferable units done so far: 102 quarter units & 111.5-117.5 quarter units done by Spring.
** Although A and A+ don’t have difference in GPA in my college, I got A+ on most of my major pre-req + writing courses. e.g. got all A+ on physics sequence, math sequence, and C++ sequence.
IGETC: N/A
Major Prep: All done by Spring
Strongly recommended courses done: 1 courses / 6 courses (only one is articulated)
TAP: none
EC:
paid internship in a mid-size tech company(major related) – worked as software assistant and networking coordinator, VP of non-major-related club, 2nd place on math competition, some amount of volunteer in high school, etc.
Essay: assume it’s fine. In my standard, 7-8/10.
@4UCBClay Hi! Yeah, so we’re all mostly on an A/B/C/D/F system, meaning +/- doesn’t affect our GPA and it doesn’t appear on our transcripts. They’ll have to judge you like they do the rest of us if you’re coming from a CCC — otherwise, the comparison is really unfair. If anything you’re +/- system might play in your favor since you’ve only once scored in the low 90s and your transcript proves that. They have no idea what our exact percentages were based on our system. So, when compared to us, you essentially have a 4.000. You’ve gotten straight As and you also have quality ECs.
Also, you didn’t follow the IGETC pattern because of your major, right? I know a lot of the STEM majors are supposed to follow different patterns. Did you complete that pattern? To be competitive, you need to complete your appropriate pattern in addition to most if not all of the highly recommended courses. Assuming you did this, I’d be shocked if you didn’t get in even though it’s an impacted (I think?) major. Good luck! Don’t worry. Your GPA puts you at the top of the pile… UCB explicitly articulated that GPA is the most important factor in their consideration of your app.
@UCLAorUCBTRNSFR I think you stand a pretty good chance (with a caveat). First, your GPA will be factored probably slightly higher as it’s a UC GPA. UCLA prioritizes UC transfers almost equal to CCC transfers, and Berkeley also takes UC transfers on a regular basis. Re your ECs, since you just got out of high school less than two years ago, it’s at their discretion, but I’m sure they aren’t just going to blind their eyes and not look at major-related hs ECs. And your other third are from college. They like to see major-related and long-term interest in ECs, and it sounds like you have that.
The one thing I will say is you should have a Letter of Reciprocity showing you completed the gen ed at your current UC. You didn’t mention that. Berkeley may demand it. I know someone who got accepted to Berkeley having noted it would be in hand, then they were missing one class and got rescinded.

I’d say you’re in. Good GPA, solid ECs. Care to chance me back?
^^^ you’re in.
Thanks guys! I’m feeling confident but nervous still! And @BoredEngineer, yeah I definitely will!!
@lexluther96 Thanks for your comment! IGETC is not required to my major, EECS (Electrical engineering & Computer Science) and is actually discouraged to completed due to a massive amount of major requirements – UCB states it.
I would leave a comment if I get accepted.
UCLA vs Cal? which one is beast in your opinion ?
@axoltyl That is a stupidly broad question and one that has been covered ad nauseam. Search on here and you’ll find plenty of answers.
@lexluther96 I mean, I’m not sure if “UCB explicitly articulated that GPA is the most important factor in their consideration of your app.” is entirely true. There have been students admitted with 3.5+ GPA. So if UCB considered GPA most important, nobody would get in with anything below a 4.0. Yes, they do heavily consider EC’s, your essay, etc. Of course it’s not weighed as much as your GPA is, but it is a huge chunk of their decision. If what you’re saying is true, then explain to me why students with 4.0 GPA have been rejected…
@kozmos2050. GPA is the most important factor but it isn’t the only factor. When people say the previous sentence this also includes factoring major applied to and the classes the student has taken. Most people who are admitted with a 3.5 or so are apply to majors that are not that competitive and have lower gpa averages.
For example, the philosophy major’s average applicant gpa is 3.74. 50% of applicants have gpa’s lower than 3.74. People who have a 4.0 and are rejected often apply without having completed either their GE’s if its a nonengineering major and/or have not finished major pre-reqs. It is true that bad/few EC’s can hurt an applicant, but more often than not the 4.0 rejects are missing some vital requirements not that they have poor EC’s.
@Ohm888 Hey! I have a question – will UCB only be considering my UC transferable GPA? Because it’s much higher than my overall GPA (my major GPA is my highest). I have taken math classes that do not pertain to my major at all, and I feel like it would be quite unfair to hold these classes against me, especially if they have nothing to do with my major as I have received a couple of C’s in them… you know what I mean?
