I heard Berkeley looks at both. additionally, I’ve read some stories on here of students who have gotten 3.8+ major GPAs but insanely low overall GPAs and they still get into the school.
I’m not Ohm888, but I’ve heard that all UCs only consider your UC transferable GPA. I could be wrong. @Kozmos2050
@Kozmos2050 Non-UC transferable grades won’t affect you, but they will look at both UC transferable GPA as a whole, as well as your major GPA specifically. Both, however, are expected to be high.
You’re responsible for all UC transferable courses you took, just as everyone else is. There’s nothing unfair about it.
@kosmos2050 I’m not sure you understand uc-transferable. It’s irrelevant if a math course (or any course) is not part of your major requirements. If you get UC unit credit for the course, they will count it. So unless it’s int. algebra or lower it will likely be factored in.
Would love to hear your opinions!
Major: Communications
GPA: 3.86
Major GPA: 3.89 (1 B in Stats, the rest A’s)
Major pre-reqs: Completed
IGETC: Completed
Extra Curricular:
- A lot of Job experience, I’ve had a full-time job since 18, when my Grandfather died I picked up a second and third job to contribute more, my grades dropped and I eventually paused my studies, I was majoring in Business so a lot of the classes I failed or withdrew from are business related. this was back in 2010-2013 and in Florida, GPA was 2.7 at that CC.
-Enrolled at a CCC and I’ve taken a total of 9 classes including all my major pre-req’s and I’ve aced them all except for Stats (B)
-Currently working full-time (1.5+ years) as a Marketing Coordinator where I activate campaigns for various brands/retailers through social media. I work for a WPP/JWT company
-My job requires a B.A/B.S in order to apply but I was promoted due to my outstanding work
-Although I work 40 hours a week, I still found time to volunteer my time to seniors with disability not a lot of time but some
-I wrote about how I learn about marketing at work and how I apply that knowledge to my course curriculum and why I’m interest in advertising/marketing.
-I feel like I explained myself eloquently enough on the insights questions to explain my drop in grades when I started college and why I want to major in communications.
Other:
- Immigrant (Cuban born) First-gen college student, gay, male, 24
- Finished all my classes during Winter 2017 so I am not enrolled currently, would the UC’s look down on me because I am not enrolled and essentially just waiting to hear back from them?
What do you guys think? Am I a strong applicant? Has anyone applied or know of anyone in my situation that can offer some advice?
Thank you!
Is there a communications major at Cal?
I think he means Media Studies?
I copied and pasted, yes I meant Media Studies
Stats isn’t even a pre-req for Media Studies though (according to assist.org)
It is for UCLA, im covering all my bases
Oh OK! I’m no expert, but you sound like a pretty strong applicant to me. Best of luck to you @brnnbrnn
Thanks! I know it doesn’t mean much but having your peers validate you some how eases the anxiety from waiting! @doihaveashot2016
Chance me, please.

@champagnemami you in, congrats on your inevitable acceptance.
Is there any point to listing our AP Scores apart from fulfilling prerequisites, like does CAL actually consider them when evaluating your application?
Can someone chance me? Thank you!

MY PERSONAL INSIGHT QUESTIONS:
1(MANDATORY) Talked about my major
4(Leadership) Talked about the student gov’t positions
5(Barriers i encountered) Talked about my single mother being unemployed, so I left cc for a semester and worked, but came back and received two scholarships and kept my grades up.
6(Most difficult experience) Talked about my grandmother being in a diabetic coma and how it has affected me tremendously but sought help for it…and that i reenrolled back to school.
UNIVERSITIES APPLIED TO: UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, UC Berkeley, UCLA
I’m very concerned about the pre-reqs; being that I haven’t finished stats but i am currently taking it! I fear CAL might reject my admission due to Stats.!?!?
@nerdygirl7576 as long as you noted the Stats class on your TAU (transfer academic update) you will be fine. The only thing that would affect admissions if you are full IGETC by this semester. I have applied to Berkeley as well and am taking Spanish which will complete my IGETC.
Best wishes to you!
@champagnemami Your GPA is good; its borderline for CAL…your lucky! My GPA is lower than yours. I think you have a good shot. Political Science is an impacted major, but I heard CAL is accepting more applicants this year so that’s a good sign!!
Best of luck!
