Berkeley is terribly liberal. There are plenty of people here who cannot care less about politics (or at least the presidential race), myself included.
–Currently at another mid-tier UC.
–Chemistry and Biological Sciences double major (can I transfer as a double major? If not, I’ll drop one.)
–Honors program student
–Cumulative Freshmen yr GPA: 3.86
–SAT: 2090; ACT: 32. I know my scores are mediocre, but apparently, UCB doesn’t care about them?
–Summer Research Project (currently going on)
currently elected as a leader (events manager) for a campus organization
–Peer mentor (2016-2017)
–tutor (2015-present)
–(small-scale) Student Council member (didn’t get selected as a division VP, unfortunately. But I have been on it for 2 quarters now)
–Will start volunteering at a local oldage home
–Will shadow a doc.
I know my application is rather weak, but I’ld seriously regret not applying.
Completion of Major Prerequisites?: Yes. Finished minimum requirements and will finish ochem and physic sequences this year.
Completion of IGETC or other GE requirements: Yes
Extracurriculars & Honors/Awards: I work at a math tutoring center and also private tutor math, biology, and chemistry. Volunteer to play music for DCSF (child services) and run races for charity. Looking for a lab internship or will volunteer at hospital this upcoming fall.
My high school class is 2015, so it’s probably not advisable to list awards from hs?
The only thing I’m really worried about is that I attended a 4 year private university for a semester this past fall and got one incomplete and an overall GPA of 3.85 (none of the courses are transferrable though). The incomplete was a course for my major and I’ve switched majors since then.
I had to take 18 units this past spring and 9 this summer on top of my ap credits (21.33 semester units worth) I had from high school to catch up and now I have a 4.0 (no w’s or incompletes). Will admissions really care about my non-transferrable courses?
Major: Psychology
Transferrable overall GPA: 4.0
Major GPA: 4.0
IGETC: Will be done in the fall
Major prep: Will be done in the fall
ECs:
-Research assistant at a psychology lab about 10 hrs/week
-Work in retail 10-15 hrs/week
-Honors certified by the spring (15 honors units)
-Psi Beta
-Phi Theta Kappa
-Presented at my school’s research conference
I only started community college this past spring because I was at 4 year college this past fall (nothing is transferrable though). I took 19 units and I am taking 9 this summer. I have about 22 semester units from AP’s as well- will this be an issue?
I’m planning to transfer from UCSD this fall.
I would really appreciate it if anyone could give me tips, chance me, or just talk about common pitfalls!
ECs:
Lab assistant at School of Medicine (starting this summer)
Undergrad research associate assistant at School of Pharmacology (Data analysis and programming)
Research assistant at Department of Psychology(throughout freshman year)
Tutor at local high school (throughout freshman year)
Volunteer at UCSD Health
Volunteer Note taker at Office for Students with Disabilities
Honors:
Provosts honors for all quarters
I am also applying for department honor which requires an honor thesis
I finished all prereqs for Math major and Comp Sci major but I feel like Math major probably is less competitive.
EC’s/work: 5 years of full-time work experience at a Fortune 500 corporation. Also attempted starting my own business, which was profitable, but not profitable enough to earn a nice living from.
Honors: Dean’s List, President’s Honor
I just need to finish Calc II in order to transfer.

Screwed around out of HS and grades bombed in college, got it together in military and have recieved 3 straight semesters 4.0. Now I’m trying to get in, hopefully upward trend is looked at after they see below avg overall GPA
@enpz45 Your GPA is pretty low, so that’s problematic. How many units do you have? Play around with a GPA calculator and see what you can get your GPA up to with the A’s you’ll hopefully get, and see if you can fit in any easy classes where you know you’ll get an A … check out online classes and use RateMyProfessor.
On the other hand, I’d say Haas is pretty fond of veterans. As a veteran (11B in 82nd) who was admitted to Fall 2016, I’d say veterans make up at least 10% of the ~100 admitted transfers. What’s important for you in your application is really killing your personal statements, and explaining your old grades and show the student you are now.
If you have any other questions along the way, feel free to reach out. In terms of the military and out of curiosity, what unit were you with?
Thanks for the advice. I know it may be a little too late for me. I’ve checked what I could bring my GPA up to if I just max out courses this upcoming semester and its a 3.62 if I ace them all. I’m sitting at 66 assist approved credits. If I’m able to get them to read the essay with the mediocre GPA I think I can talk myself up a little bit with accomplishments during military and afterwards. I’ll keep you in the loop.
Was with 3/75 2010-2012 & 82nd 1-508 Bn 4th Bct 12-14.
When you first bombed college, how bad was it? How many units and what did your grades look like?
I did poorly as well when I first did college right after high school. I did a few semesters and had like 3 C-'s and an incomplete and some other crap. After the military I was going to school but with no direction, so I did well enough but not great (i.e. a lot of B’s). When I decided on Haas, I started killing it. I honestly don’t know what my GPA was since I don’t know how they calculated it, but it could have been anywhere from a 3.6ish to a 3.8ish. Regardless, I still got in. You just gotta sell yourself and your experiences well, and hope they really consider your upward trend … which is something they’ll usually look for. I know the prompts have changed quite a bit this year, but you should be able to get in there somehow how you found direction and started really taking school seriously … or you can even use an “additional info” section to mention it.
What community college do you go to? Do they have TAP where you’re at?
For real though, any Q’s along the way you can just message me.
@enpz45, If you totally bombed (D’s or F’s) any semesters during your first run at college, depending on your college, you might be able to request academic renewal or something of the like. It might be able to “erase” your previous grades from your transcript.
Major: Econ or maybe business
GPA: 3.35
Major GPA: 2.5 for econ 3.4 for business
Units: 72 quarter units
Igetc: Complete
Major prep: For econ it will be complete in Fall 2016 (calc 3). For business ill have it complete by spring 2017
ECs: In a few clubs, work, volunteer for non profit organizations, secretary for a club **
Grade trend: I got a 4.0 in the spring and summer term
Honors and awards: Dean’s list, Honors program
Now I have a question, the reason why my major GPA and my overall GPA is low is because of the two calculus classes I have taken (got a C in both of them). Regarding that, My major GPA for Business is a lot higher than my major gpa for econ but business is WAY more competitive than econ. Which would you say I have a better chance of being admitted, (BUIS or Econ)- ( I want to do buis here but econ is perfectly fine w/ me, I just want to apply for the major I have the highest chance of getting admitted). Do any of you guys know how much they consider major gpa over the other factors/ aspects. Do you guys have any advice for me? Please help me out.
