UC Berkeley 2017 Transfer Thread

^^^ Oh yes I have a TAP account

Major: EECS
GPA: 3.78 (pretty low/average for EECS applicants) hopefully will go up
Units: 72 semester units completed units, 103 before transfering
IGETC: Complete (but doesn’t matter for Engineering students)
Major prep: Calc 1 and 2, Physics A, Differential Equations, both English requirements, and Linear Algebra are complete all others will be complete at the end of Spring
Work: I am a Writing Tutor and Math Tutor. I was an English as a Second Language tutor but because of changes in the program I decided to stop after last semester to get more hours at the math center. I will be Teaching at a Math Camp for Community College Students this summer.
ECs: Active in Phi Theta Kappa volunteer activities (including Relay for Life and cleaning up local parks/lakes), Secretary of the Welcome Hearing and Deaf Together Club, Make-A-Wish Telethon volunteer and once I turn 21 I will be a Make-A-Wish wish granter.
Honors and awards: Dean’s list every semester, and Phi Theta Kappa (working on getting an officer position)
Hook: I qualify for DSPS service (although I don’t use them) I’m a TriO student (I think that only helps with scholarships). I grew up in extreme poverty and was often homeless. I had to leave high school after being hospitalized after attempting suicide.

Personal Statement: I’m going to write about my experiences with homelessness and mental illness to show how much it has helped me grow as a person for the personal quality/experience essay. For the major-specific essay, I’m going to talk about how last year I was actually writing the same essay for Econ but I couldn’t do it because I knew it wasn’t right for me. I fell in love with eecs shortly thereafter.

I would definitely try for Econ. Haas school of business is notoriously difficult to get into. A 3.4 is just not going to get you in. I also think they might be a little bit more lenient that an Econ major doesn’t get the highest Calculus grades.

@Rshah123 Sorry to say but your GPA and extracurriculars are not competitive for either major. I would say that you’re more likely to admitted econ but both have near 3.9 average GPAs for transfer students to both majors.

Economics at Berkeley is actually relatively math intensive and getting Cs in Calculus I or II do not bode well for your success in ECON 140 (Econometrics), which is a requirement for all econ majors. Econ 100A-B (which is the less math extensive sequence), is also fairly challenging for those without adequate mathematical preparation. Try your hardest to increase your GPA to get into a competitive range but temper your expectations with backup schools.

@AspiringBear2017 I have met many students with a similar background as yours with similar stats so I would say your chance at transferring is very strong. Just take care to frame your statements to not sound like a sob story and focus on who you are now and how your troubled past has influenced you. Imo as long as your essays are great you will be accepted.

How much do you guys think Berkeley weighs improvement in grade trends?

@badmintongirl It’s definitely a large consideration, but the answer is that it depends. If you flunked out of community college 5 years ago and you came back and you did very well, then you improved and your earlier grades don’t honestly matter at that point.

If you’ve been in CC for 2 years and you did very poorly your first semester and slowly did better each consecutive semester, that’s good, but there are also MANY qualified students with 3.9~4.0s that are also rejected. In that context, the improved grades don’t actually matter that much.

Now, if there were demonstrable reasons why your earlier grades were poor, they should be told and they’ll take it into consideration.

In other words, Cal’s holistic.

I will write about the struggles I have been through this past 2 years to develop my confidence, how to be self-sufficient in managing time/classes/your daily necessity, leadership qualities, how to succeed in future and my ridiculous fear of living in a new environment (I started community college in the US when I was 16 years old ( adaptation problem moving from high school to college).
    Sorry for the long information

Hi guys, I’m going to bump this thread so more prospective applicants can post here!

Here’s my stats:

Good luck to you all!!

Hi guys, I am also planning on applying to transfer to UC Berkeley for Fall 2017.

I have a few questions regarding transferring to UC Berkeley. Where does self-learning through online resources such as Coursera, Edx, and MIT OpenCourseware, Udacity, Udemy, Lynda, Treehouse, etc. fit into the transfer application? Do side projects count as valid extracurricular activities? If I change my mind and decide to take a gap year to work to save money and apply for Fall 2018 transfer, how would UCB look at my application?

Please Chance me!

Major GPA: 4.0
IGETC: Will be done in the fall
Major Prep: Completed for Berkeley, UCLA, and UCSD. Will be done in the fall/spring for all others.
Tap: Yes, will be certified the spring before transfer for UCLA. Berkeley doesn’t have a TAP program at my cc, unfortunately.
Tag: Will be tagging UC Davis when the filing period opens
Units Completed: Summer 2016 - 35 completed. By Fall 2016 - 54 completed. By Winter 2016/17 - 61 completed. By Spring 2017 - 79 completed (If all goes according to plan, if not I’ll still have over 60 units completed by spring before transfer).
W’s: 1 for a music course. My counselor informed me that I needed to take at least 5 honors courses to complete the honors program and TAP (UCLA). I didn’t want to go over 80 transferavle units, so I dropped music. Not sure if I should explain that in my application or not… Advice would be appreciated.

Personal Statement: Started working on it when the application opened, have yet to have professors proof-read.

Extra information:
African-American, female (not that it matters).
Pre-med.

Thanks!

@LynAmmo how early do you recommend starting the personal statement?

@LynAmmo I am just curious: have you already taken any of Bio,Chemistry,Organic Chemistry, Bio Chemistry, Physics and Math? Anthropology major has 3 major requirements and that leaves me a room to finish General chemistry this year. And, good luck, fellow anthropology major!

@annbern I am starting little by little every week. I know my schedule is crazy this semester, so I don’t want to leave it to the last month. The sooner the better, so you have time to correct, have professors proofread, etc.

@laccstudent I’m taking chemistry this semester and will start on bio next semester. I’m in pre-calculus right now and will finish up to calculus 3 in the summer, so I’m pretty sure I’ll be done with med school math pre-reqs before I transfer. I’ll finish the general chem. series, the math requirements, and the general bio. series. Everything else I’ll do when I transfer over.

Are you pre-med as well? :D/

@LynAmmo good on you for not procrastinating! I don’t know if I can say the same about myself hahaha. Just for clarification, it’s the prompts listed here, right?: http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/how-to-apply/personal-questions/transfer/index.html
