@doihaveashot2016 Hopefully I do, hopefully. Sadly the appeal system only lets us appeal to a single school so we have to make it count. If you end up doing so I would reccomend getting the best writers you know to look over it and help you out. If you can afford it, maybe see if you can get in touch with professionals like askmssun or cacollegetransfer.
@mangobby That sucks. Your application seems great. UCLA’s loss that they didn’t accept you. Hopefully Cal sends good news your way. A couple of my friends last year were rejected/waitlisted for LA and got into Cal. Hopefully that happens to you. With your stats I would strongly advise you to appeal if things go that way.
Well said. People tend to put too much of an emphasis on the school one attends. Taking CS like you said for example. Teaching quality and courses do vary from school to school but to a large extent undergraduate CS teaching is similar across the board. Especially when most top colleges have their entire courses online for people to learn and take on their own time. It’s extremely important to note that when looking at return on investment and such it’s not so much the school that matters, but the field of study one pursues. Thankfully, from what I understand the undergraduate degree only matters for the first job or two. After that it’s about accomplishments after one’s education.
There’s a lot about the “holistic admissions” process that has me throwing my arms up in frustration. I don’t know how much I like it or dislike it. I tend lean toward disliking it mostly because it seems to put such an emphasis on writing ability over any of the other qualities of a good student. We do what we can though and hope everything works out.
Thanks so much for your help, @Orangered123
At least I have a shot, even if it’s small. The study abroad information is awesome and I’ll check it out!
Good luck to you this Friday - I hope you get into the school of your choice.
I was also in the Marine Corps and we purposely make training difficult because of what is asked of a Marine…that is to kill the enemy and to do it under adverse conditions.
However, the push for quality versus meeting quotas is an issue with military recruiting. They know that there is a certain percentage of recruits that will wash out. The first order of business is to have each new platoon of recruits at its maximum level. That is the mandate of the recruiters. On the back end the Drill Instructors are given the unenviable job of weeding out the non-hackers but still graduate a reasonable percentage of recruits. A recruiter will take a marginal person in (knowing they will wash out), but they are not held accountable if the recruit doesn’t succeed.
I wonder what UCLA’s persistence rate is (I think the grad rates are fairly high over a 5 year period), but if one was to follow say this years transfer class to graduation, how many will graduate and how long will it take?
@suenos53 No problem. Good luck to you too! I hope you get in. It would be terrible if the reason you didn’t get accepted was because of one form. I hope we both get into our top schools. Depending on how Friday goes, I would suggest considering an appeal. It goes without saying that you should get the best writers you know to proofread it and If you can afford it I would consider going to professionals. The ones I know that specialize in the UC’s are ■■■■■■■■■■■■ who’s been in the business for years doing both freshmen and transfer applicants to the UC’s and ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ run by our very own @lindyk8 (even if she stopped coming here a while back) that launched last year or so specializing in helping transfer students.
I think I should say as a disclaimer that I’m not making any money or such by recommending these two folks. I’ve emailed and gotten some free advising from cacollegetransfer before though when I wanted to drop a class and was worried it it would be a problem. Both are professionals and have a strong understanding of the transfer process. I bought cacollegetransfer’s book on UC transferring last year and highly reccomend it since it’s great. I’ve followed askmssun’s blog for about three years now and it’s been a great resource for general help and knowledge.
@jonathaanv It’s annoying that there’s two, but I we do what can do. I’ve bookmarked both threads and following them by refreshing the mybookmarks page on college confidential to keep up with everything.
also the only reason people put an emphasis on the schools they attend is because we have been socialized to address a relative value to certain schools. The social construct of post-secondary education and how closely tied it is to capitalism is unquestionable.
The same contrast can be seen in all the things that are “valued” in our society. However, one only has to look at gold as a commodity, and that its value fluctuates based on demand. The education system has some how bucked the laws of supply and demand in that the outcomes as they relate to the value is way out of wack!
Especially at the undergrad level, no one really learns anything extraordinary except they continue on to grad school. A psych grad cannot practice psychology, and econ major cannot become an economist without a graduate degree, but you also cannot work for Enterprise Rent A Car without a college degree!! I have a friend who’s son graduated from UC Irvine (not sure of degree), but ended up in Enteprises management program. She was livid to have spent so much money to have her son end up handing out car keys!!
I’ve been following this thread for a while but decided to just make an account. I have a possible theory that I would like to run by you guys! So, I created a cal central account to register for summer classes, (haven’t registered for any classes yet) and I got a notification today. The notification says: “Visitor & Parent Services offers special tours for newly admitted and waitlisted students and their families.” Additionally, I have another notification from cal central today that says: “Our records indicate that you do not currently have a bConnected account (UC Berkeley email and calendar). Visit bConnected to create your bConnected account.”
Does anyone else with a cal central account have these notifications?
@relaxedsoup I made my Cal Central account a month back to register for summer classes. I checked right now, no notifications updates. I’m reaaaaaaaaly worried right now.
@Orangered123 Wow! Thank you for this information. The counselors at my school are unfamiliar with the UC transfer process so if I try to appeal, I know I would benefit from professional help.
Thanks, again, for going tonthe transfer lectures and being the eyes and ears for others who couldn’t make it to Berkeley.
I am trying to weigh the pros and cons of each school right now…Does anyone else feel conflicted about which school would be the best match for their career goals? So far, I got into SD, Irvine and SC. Waiting on Berkeley and Georgia Tech.
Seems like there is something different I would get from each school.
@relaxedsoup True, but it seems to suggest somewhat legitimate possibilities. I don’t know how much to read into this, but I hope it doesn’t mean toooo much. When you made your account how did you indicate your status? did you say you were a transfer student who applied but did not know his/her status yet?
@Orangered123 Yes I indicated that I was a transfer student who applied but didn’t know his/her status. The account is also linked with my MAP account. I can login to Cal Central with both logins.
@suenos53 You’re welcome! I try, hopefully people got something out of my Cal Day post even if it was somewhat vague and short. Those are three amazing schools for engineering. All threes have their pros and cons but no matter your choice you can go anywhere with a degree from them. You should plan on visiting all three on transfer day and maybe talking with past transfers to there to get an idea how they’re all like.
@relaxedsoup I just checked to see if my Cal Central is connected to my MAP account and it seems that it is. This isn’t doing much to lift my mood. I’m hoping that it’s not bad news. Has anyone else tested this and/or learned anything?
