Major: Math
Overall GPA: 3.91 hopefully 3.93 by end of fall (one W)
Major GPA: 4.0
IGETC: Done by fall
Major Prep: Done by fall
TAP: no
ECs: this is what I’m really worried about, nothing much besides high school stuff.
I’m in the honors program but I don’t know if that counts. Will probably join Mesa.
@rinachez Of course the honors program counts! Also, if you’re working - that counts. People usually don’t realize that they have lots of ECs. Just go through your day to day activities and you’ll maybe find some things you missed like taking care of siblings, going to the gym regularly, church, etc…
Good luck!
@LynAmmo Thanks!!!
Chance me?
In-state CC student
Note: Out of high school, I attended UCSB for one quarter (Fall 2014). I withdrew for health reasons.

Applying: UCB, UCD, UCI, UCLA, UCSD
I am not sure if my stats are competitive enough for admission to UCB, so I would appreciate your objective opinion.
Thank you!
@LynAmmo You can put things like going to the gym? I thought about that but it seemed odd to put it on my app.
@notdandy If you do it regularly, that’s what I heard in the seminar that came to our CC. All the colleges want to know is what you do outside of the classroom and the activities you enjoy. There is a separate part in the application that talks about volunteer work, a separate part that talks about work experience, etc etc, you would put, for example, if you were part of a gym membership and you guys met every week or something you would put it in the extracurricular activities.
Transfer Applicants. Study the statistics of admissions to determine your chances. These links should help you understand some of the demographics.
http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/infocenter/admissions-source-school
http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/infocenter/transfers-major
The first link - Admissions - Source - School - likely includes your CCC. Shows the number of applicants from your school to each UC; number admitted; and diversity of accepted student body for each academic year.
The second link is - Majors. It shows number of applicants per major at your target UC - gpa of admitted students in that major - admission rate for that major.
UC has streamlined “essays” because honestly they don’t mean that much. Further, extra-curriculars don’t either unless it’s something extraordinary - like you circumnavigated the globe solo. Otherwise, it’s about the numbers - i.e., gpa - in the major your seeking.
All the rest is static. Just read the statistics on the links above to estimate your “chance.”
That said, UC is a great system and the CCC Transfer program is an absolute priority over and above inter-school transfers and from non-CCC schools. Even International CCC students have a great chance of admission over inter-school transfers and non-CCC schools.
Good luck.
Hey Folks:
Look at this UC site re Transfer Statistics by Major, transfer GPA, and target UC. If you are California CC student, it also has the statistics in each major for your college.
http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/infocenter/transfers-major
So, you can see how many transfer apps. Haas got, how many students were admitted, the gpa’s, and then you can see how many transfers from your current CC got into Haas, if any.
Forget the worry of “essay” and “activities” concentrate on GPA in the subject you are targeting.
Major: Statistics
GPA: 3.767 (hopefully a 3.8 by end of fall 2016)
IGETC: Will be done by the end of Spring 2017

- Volunteered at a Computer Science organization for small kids
- Had a job at Kumon ( Teaching Assistant)
- Embedded Tutor in my community college for Math for Elementary and Intermediate Algebra.
- Will be a Certified tutor by the end of Fall 2016 ( Currently undergoing a tutor training program)
- Dancer and was a recognized teaching assistant at my dance school.
Target Schools : UCB, UCLA, UCD (Tagging)
What do you guys think are my chances of getting in? I just started working on my personal statements. I have 2 Bs on my transcript which is really worrying me One of the Bs I got was for Chemistry which I took in the Spring semester, and I changed my major so I no longer needed to take it anymore. But it was too late to drop. The other B I got when I took Calc 2 over the summer, which was a darn intense and hard course. And I took this course along with 3 other online courses over the summer, so basically I took 14 units during the summer.
Wow, you took 4 classes for total of 14 units in the Summer.
Is your CC on semester or quarter system?
That’s really intense either way.
@StevenToCollege No, its on the semester system lol
@rosedarling123 -
This site has the data, so to speak.
http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/infocenter/transfers-major
These data show for UC Berkeley:
2015 Transfer data for Statistics majors
Total # applied - 157
Total # admitted - 47
Admit Rate % - 30%
GPA of middle 1/2 of accepted students: 3.67 - 3.93. This means 1/4 of admitted students were above that range and 1/4 were below that range. However there is no GPA breakdown of total applicant pool. Further, there are likely far fewer applicants with GPA’s above 3.93 than applicants below 3.67 and thus correspondingly distinct admission chances.
So let’s fool around and assign hypothetical numbers of applicants to various GPAs.
Group A GPA >3.93 = 20/157 applicants
Group B GPA >3.67 - <3.93 = 55/157 applicants
Group C GP A <3.67 = 82/157 applicants
Group A 12/20 applicants admitted = approx. 60% chance of admission
Group B 24/55 applicants admitted = approx. 43% chance of admission
Group C 12/82 applicants admitted = approx. 14% chance of admission
While this is interesting, the UC schools try to balance classes These factors include geography, socioeconomics and gender. If you live closer to Berkeley than UCLA, your chances are slightly better at Berkeley and vice versa. [Studies confirm most students attend colleges within 50 miles of their homes.] Further, if you check any of the socioeconomic categories, such as first generation, that’s factored in too. However GPA likely remains the strongest metric.
Once you lay all of that out, then you’ve got a better idea what your chances are. Essays and ECs are more meaningful for 1st year/Freshmen applicants - and they care more about how you have progressed in your chose field/major. In reviewing transfer applicants, if pre-reqs. haven’t been met, boom your out - no time for excuses. Holistic doesn’t make up for lacking pre-reqs. Low GPAs also get reviewed but quickly set aside.
This gets the group to a more manageable number of potential admits. Higher GPA applicants get a long look, where they live, etc., and then down the GPA line. It’s unlikely transcripts are scrutinized on a class by class basis. Your overall GPA pretty much says it all if you’ve met the major pre-requisites.
So honestly, your educated guess is as good as anyone else reading this thread.
That said, it’s nice to share the anxiety of this experience with the support of fellow transfer applicants.
Thank you so much @wormandcandy !
And yes indeed, the anxiety just keeps growing and growing until you get in, or get rejected lol…
So you’re saying for transfers, GPA and completion of pre-reqs is more important than extracurriculars?
I’m pretty sure I’ll have all my pre-reqs completed by next spring. I’m just really anxious about my GPA. Cause I figured even if I get all straight As this semester, my GPA can only go up to 3.818.
Speaking of which, does your spring GPA count towards admission too? Or is it just your Fall GPA.
hey guys im gonna be applying to UC Berkeley for the fall 2017 semester as an anthropology major. So far I’ve maintained a 4.0 gpa. However, I might be getting a B this fall semester (gpa would drop to about a 3.90-3.92). I was wondering if any of yall know if that would impact my chances.
Also, how competitive is it to get into UC Berkeley for anthropology? As far as I know, I’ve read that its pretty “easy” for UCLA, seeing that their anthro acceptance rate last year was around 50%, with a 3.5ish average gpa admit rate. I’ve read all over the place that berkeley accepts transfers by the “school”, and not the “major”. But in no way is an applicant applying for a super capped major like econ going to have the same chances of admission for a less competitive major such as anthropology, right? It simply doesn’t make sense.
@goldencub, you seem pretty informed, judging from your past posts. You got any ideas on my inquiries?
@genieforuboi The difference between a 3.9 and a 4.0 is negligible. If you complete your prereqs (if they’re required) and IGETC, you’ll be fine.
So applicants are technically admitted by division - so in theory, getting into Anthro should be equally as difficult as getting into Econ. That’s not really what we see, however. Expect admission into Anthro to be as difficult as the other non-capped social sciences. A 3.7 GPA makes one competitive (although people with lower GPAs can still get in.) The rule I’ve gone by is to look at UCLA’s median admit GPA and add 0.1 for Berkeley. It’s a rough rule, but it seems fairly accurate for the most part.
So yeah, I think you have excellent chances.
@goldencub, thanks for the reply.
Do you know how much cal takes extracurriculars into account? i mean i have some but theyre pretty crappy to be honest.
And as for the problem with gpa. I guess ur right in that a 3.9-4.0 is pretty negligible. But what im worried about is that admissions will see a drop in my trend of grades. They would first see the 4.0 that i received last year, and then see that my gpa dropped to a 3.9ish after i submit my fall grades in January.
@genieforuboi ECs don’t matter too much for non-capped majors. Even then, GPA/completion of requirements is more important.
They don’t really view that as a drop - it’s just one B, and they’ll see that you’re doing very well overall. They would definitely care about getting multiple Cs in the fall, for example.
You should start working on your personal insight questions if you haven’t already.
If i apply as an applied math major am i accepted directly into the major or into L&S? If i end up not liking applied math can i switch to another major in L&S?
You are accepted into L&S as undeclared.
Once you are done with the prerequisites, you can petition for the major.
However, some competitive majors require higher GPA, e.g., 3.0 for Econ and 3.3 for CS.
