UC Berkeley Fall 2019 Transfer Thread

Hey everyone!!!

I know It’s early, but I figured we should get started. I’m really excited about where we’ll be a year from now, waiting for decisions to come out. I’m getting ahead of myself - you can post your status here and/or ask any questions. Hopeful this can be a space where we all can help and support one another.

Good luck everyone

This is a outline of helpful stats people posted from past threads-

Morning! <:-P

Major: Cultural Anthropology (double minor - Sexuality Studies / Human Rights)
CCC Transfer: Merritt / Berkeley City
UC GPA: 3.7
Major GPA: 4.0
IGETC: Complete
Prereqs: Complete
AA: Social and Behavioral Science 2015
EC/Work Experience: nearly two decades of working full-time in various administrative roles like A/P, extremely competent but not motivated or happy.
Volunteer: 2-3 years with local animal shelters, meals on wheels, feeding the homeless.
Strengths: Critical thinking/English - done with essays.
Weakness: Math, despise it. Nearly lost my mind struggling to get an A in Statistics. Managed B’s in prereqs by the skin of my teeth. Math is like that one relative I can’t stand but have to play nice with during family gatherings.

Ethnicity: African-American, declining to state on apllications.
Gender: Female
Income: 55k, low ish especially in the Bay Area.
Hooks: 36 yr old non-traditional student, URM (again not mentioning that), first generation

Schools (in order of preference): UCD (TAG), Stanford (1-2% chance, I love a challenge lol), UCB, SJSU, SFSU

Excited to focus on getting my BA. Would love to work for a non-profit, as a counselor or an academic advisor even if it means a pay cut. Graduate school…depends on how I feel after the BA. Wouldn’t mind teaching at the college level, not interested in K-12. Good luck everyone!

Major: Molecular and Cell Biology
CCC Transfer
UC GPA: 4.0

Freelance Videographer & Photographer (filmed events such as weddings and quinceñeras)

Personal Statements:

  • wrote about my story as an immigrant who knew little to no English.
  • wrote about how I was one of the people whose admission was withdrawn from UC Irvine last year, which I used as a motivation to make sure I do reach my goals.

Awards:

  • AP scholar/Honor Roll Magna Cum Laude
  • Alpha Pi Alpha/ Alpha Kappa Alpha Oratorical Contest 1st place
  • Speech & Debate team Dina Stallings 1st place Overall Winner
  • Mayor’s Award Recognition (Speech Team)
  • Directing Change: Mental Health Matters 2017 film winner (Riverside)
  • Academic Decathlon Inland Empire Top Six

Schools: UC Berkeley, UCLA, USC, UCSB (TAG), UC San Diego, and UCR

Weakness: I’m still searching for activities/research that are base on my major to participate in since I feel like my application lacks science-related things (there’s not a lot where I live) + I’m currently in my first year of community college so I haven’t done a lot since I am a full time student.
Good luck to everyone!

Hello everyone!
I am so glad that somebody started this thread.

Major: Anthro at all except UCB, in which case Society and Environment in CNR
CCC Transfer
GPA: 4.0 (all)
Honors: Completed
Gender: Female
IGETC and Pre-reqs: will be finished by Fall 2018
Non trad / returning student

Extracurriculars: PTK VP and then President, started a club, some policy work at both campus and state level. UCLA CCCP.
Job/Work Experience: Lots, worked three jobs while studying including supplemental instruction at my school and running my own fairly successful business (unrelated to my major). Started working in my native country at age 13 so far too many years of pretty varied experience to count. I feel like if I went too far down this particular rabbit hole it would reflect badly so I will stick to most recent, long-term and college related work on my app.
Volunteer/Community service: Some on campus, plenty within my community - mostly related to running arts based mentorship programs at K-12 schools in my district, collaborating with non-profits on arts related projects and working with DSPS and student equity on campus.
Personal Statement: Working on these - any other returning students struggling to decide what to share?
Financial Aid: Low EFC
Hooks: First gen by some definitions but not others (my mother recently got a degree, on another continent), presented research related to my major at various conferences and published in undergrad journals. Parenting student, immigrant.
Strengths: English / Critical thinking
Weaknesses: I have a W from my first semester at CC, took the class the following semester and got an A. Math in general. Remaining classes are science and econ based so may affect GPA considering my math difficulties. Spatial processing disability - I can’t decide whether to tackle “overcoming” this in a personal statement or just leave it out of my application entirely. High unit count (90 or so at transfer)

Applying: UCB, UCLA, UCSC (Tag), perhaps I’ll get adventurous and add Yale and Brown just to really reach for the old American dream but I’m not sure I need to, I feel like UCB and UCLA are enough of a stretch considering where I come from.

Good luck everyone!

I’m so excited to finally be posting in these after lurking for a year lol.

Major: psychology or philosophy (psychology is ideal but way more competitive so im still deciding)
CCC Transfer
UC GPA: 3.8 or 3.7
Major GPA: 4.0
Gender: Female
IGETC and Pre-reqs: finished IGETC not sure about he bio and calc prereqs for psych :frowning: there are no prereqs I can do for philosophy

Extracurriculars:
Intern at a rehab for mental health/addiction
volunteer at a non profit rehab
tutor at adolescent rehabs
still trying to find more, suggestions would be great!!

Scholars/honors program at my school

Schools: UC Berkeley, UCLA (TAP), USC, UC Davis (TAG)

Weakness: I need more extra currics that apply to my major!!! And I got one C in chem which destroyed my GPA, I have A’s in everything else :frowning:

oh also I forgot to mention that I have one W and im not sure how bad that is

@halpmehxd I asked an admissions rep at UCLA last summer and she was totally unconcerned about my one W. I believe that a pattern of W’s is a problem but even that can be explained (briefly) in the additional info section of the app.

@halpmexd

Was admitted to UC Berkeley Haas and will be attending this coming Fall 2018. I had more than 3 W’s, some D’s and F’s (removed with AR). They look at grade trends, and one W is not something to worry about. Like @rainbowbritey said, you have the opportunity to explain it if necessary.

Thank you both! I feel much better now haha

They don’t care about Ws.

Major: History
CCC Transfer: American River College in Sacramento
UC GPA: 4.0
Major GPA: 4.0
IGETC: Will complete in Fall.
Prereqs: Most will be done by Spring, except for one class I can’t take due to timing. I met with the History Undergrad Advisor, who told me it won’t be required.
History AAT in progress, graduating Spring 2019.
EC/Work Experience: 14 years as a legal secretary. Participated in UCB’s TAP, Starting Point Mentorship Program and Berkeley Summer Experience (BSE) Weekend. Participated in UC Davis Aggies’ Transfer Scholars Weekend and TAG program.

Ethnicity: Mexican/Salvadoran.
Gender: Female
Hooks: URM, re-entry, non-traditional, student parent, first generation.

Schools (in order of preference): UCB, UCD (TAG), UCSB, UCSD, UCM, UCI

Strengths: Perfect grades, tons of work experience. I’ve taken advantage of every program offered by Cal and Davis to improve my chances of admission. Tons of info received through participation in programs listed above, including application review before submission.

Weaknesses: No volunteer work, but learned this weekend that for an applicant like me (working full time, attending school full time, parent, etc.) they do not expect volunteer activities.

Overall, I think I have a good chance of getting into Cal and Davis. Where I attend will depend upon financial aid and work factors.

Personal Statement:
Working on it so I can’t say for sure, but I will have them checked out by multiple faculty members from multiple departments at my school
Wrote about how I didn’t have an education for three years due to being trapped in Pakistan for losing my identification before adolescence
Wrote about my significant health problems and disabilities that preventing me from performing well in high school and how I am dealing with them currently in college
Wrote about how I’ve lost many family members during my time in high school and college that also prevented me from reaching my academic potential and the struggles my mother and I had to make when my father, in particular, died from an accident and the economic struggles that came with not having an income for the first 6 months.
Wrote about how I would like to earn 6 degrees within two years of enrolling at a CCC to show a testament toward my willingness to continually learn every day and take advantage of every opportunity this country has to offer after witnessing people in Pakistan who would give their left foot to receive any education in general.

EFC: 0

California Resident, USA

Asian American Male

Income below $15,000

Hooks
EOPS
DSPS
First Generation Officially, not so much Unofficially (My father and mother both got their degrees from Pakistan but there is no evidence that they had an education at all, not even in their government profiles, perhaps I’ll not consider myself as a first-generation student just to be safe
Ethnic Minority

Strengths:
Currently taking 15 units in the summer, 25 units in the fall, and 24 units in the spring while dealing with kidney problems, type 1 diabetes, Heart dysrhythmia, blood pressure issues, thyroid issues, and cholesterol issues at the age of 19. Also handling all this with running a business in which I need to travel 5 hours total front and back with my mother to Fremont to host exhibitions

Weaknesses:
Received two B’s in prerequisites required for my major at UC Berkeley, both of which are Macro and Microeconomics. I want to explain my situation in spring 2018 why I received a B in Micro and tell them that my mother had heart problems and my doctor recently revealed I was at risk for undergoing kidney dialysis so I needed to focus more on my health, more so than my education.
I would like to be in more clubs and programs and interact more with the community. I will be in PTK and a business club in the fall so I don’t know how much that will affect my application. I’ve primarily been focused on my business and my education.

Applying:
UC Berkeley (Business Administration)
UC Los Angeles (Business Economics)
UC Irvine (Business Administration)
UC Davis (TAG- Managerial Economics)
UC Santa Barbara (Economics)

Will be applying to Berkeley Haas. 4.0 GPA, but failed a pre requisite course earlier due to personal circumstance. I had Academic Renewal done, retook the class and got an A. Would this weigh me down when applying to Haas this Fall? I have all pre reqs done and overall GPA is 4.0. Thanks

Re Haas:

http://www.haas.berkeley.edu/Undergrad/ucb_prereq.html

@GoodAfternoonSir Hey I remember you from the other Haas 2018 thread. GPA is a bit low but your resilience really shows through everything you have done, hopefully they see that.

@neilsola I’m expected to have a 3.85 gpa after fall grades. Yes it’s a bit early to say but I will study like my life depends on it

I’ll have done 25 units in the fall that includes all difficult math accounting and business classes while doing extracurricular activities such as running my business. Do you think the big gpa boost and the workload will me me more competitive? What do you think?

Yes I think it will make you more competitive because it only helps your stats. How many years have you been at a CCC? It’s impressive how many AAs you have

@neilsola I’m a 19-year-old student who enrolled in my community college straight after high school. Matter of fact I took two summer classes right after graduating high school at the college which helped me a little bit in allowing me to get these degrees. I’m expected to transfer for fall 2019, and will have all 6 AA’s by spring 2019. In other words, I will have earned these degrees within 2 years.

@GoodAfternoonSir Same, I also enrolled right after high school and also took summer classes after graduating haha.
I’m also working on my applications right now to transfer. Sometimes I feel we are at a disadvantage because of so many non-traditional applicants who are older and have more experience. The average age for transfers to Haas was 22 according to the class profile.
