UC Berkeley Appeal

I got rejected by UC Berkeley. But I did not mention in my application that I have been taking care of my grandma (Alzheimer's Disease) and my grandpa (colon cancer) since November of my junior year. It was really hard for me to study. Is this circumstance strong enough to appeal my admission? Also, when do they begin to read appeals? I know you can submit your appeals, but do the admission officers read it as soon as it comes in? Thank you everybody?

I think that will be hard to provide proof for.

My grandfather eventually passed away and I have my grandpa’s death certificate :(( I’m sure I can get documents on my grandma’s Alzheimer’s. But yes, I cannot prove that I took care of them. Do you know if they go by the honor system for situations like these?

It does say you can submit a rec of letters. Perhaps ask someone who knew that you were taking care of them?

None of my teachers or coaches knew that this was going on.

Also, does the letter of recommendation drastically increase your chances?

yes it is an honors system, just as you could have put anything on your original application essay
A decent letter of recommendation probably won’t do much since almost everyone will most likely have a decent one but an excellent letter of recommendation can definitely make a difference. But neither will drastically increase your chances, the main and most important evaluation is still your essay.

Okay, thank you everybody! But does anybody know when they actually begin reading these appeals?

@TreyBurke I am a student who also wants to appeal. Sorry I can not answer your question. But can u tell me where is the link to appeal? I have been searching it for the whole night. Thank you very much!

@lovecal On your rejection page, it should have a link to the FAQ page. click on it and scroll down until you see the section on appeals. There should be a link to the appeals page. Good luck!

@TreyBurke Mine is a waitlist page. And it appears the following

Can I challenge the admission decision?
Any applicant who does not receive an offer of admission has the option to appeal, whether or not they are on the wait list. UC Berkeley strongly discourages letters of appeal unless you can provide significant new information for us to consider. Our selection process involves a careful, individual reading of each application, and it is very unlikely that we will choose to reverse our original decision. However, if you choose to appeal: 1) Appeals are completed online and must express new and compelling information as to why UC Berkeley should reconsider its admission decision. 2) The deadline for appeals is 2 weeks after the admissions decisions have been released. Please note that applicants may not appeal to be placed on the wait list. For more information on the appeals process, see How Berkeley Selects Students.

However when I check on the “How Berkeley Selects Students”(<a href=“Selection Process - Office of Undergraduate Admissions”>Academic Programs & Majors - Office of Undergraduate Admissions), there is nothing about appeal.

I also check on the “Application FAQs"(http://admissions.berkeley.edu/applicationfaqs)There</a> is nothing.

What should I do? Or could you provide the link of that FAQ page.

Thank you very much.

@lovecal Maybe that means you were placed on the waitlist and not actually rejected.

@evidentlyme However it says “Any applicant who does not receive an offer of admission has the option to appeal, whether or not they are on the wait list. ”

@lovecal Oh, I didn’t realize waitlisted applicants could appeal. I know there’s a little box for them to type in things they want considered, so maybe that’s kind of an appeal. I’m sorry, but I don’t have the link.

@lovecal that is the link.

@evidentlyme, there is no box to do that if you are waitlisted?
