UC BERKELEY chances? happy to chance other people too

Hi! If you don’t mind reading my info really quickly and telling me some thoughts about me applying to uc berkeley, why/why not you think i'd get in, or things to improve on – I’d really appreciate the feedback :)
I'd either apply to UC Berkeley College of Natural Resources or L&S

-im a URM female (Hispanic) from the Midwest at a nationally ranked college prep magnet school

-UC translated GPA (unweighted, no 9th grade): 4
-no class rank but at my school its difficult to get average grades, never mind exceptional ones - 50% of the class has a GPA between 2.8-3.0

-SAT CR: 740, M: 640, W: 740 ----> 2120 total
(Retaking, having studied a lot i'm hoping for 2200+)

AP and Honors classes:
you cant take any APs fresh/soph year and they limit how many you can take jun/sr year - but i've taken advantage definitely to the best of my ability and have many honors/ap courses with no free periods!

ECs

-Lacrosse 4 years, MVP, US National Lacrosse Travel Team
-Competitive Cheerleading (only 2 years), US National Cheer Team
-Elected Class President
-Girl Scouts - member of the elected Board of Representatives
-Elected to be a mentor for the freshman class
-Volunteering and service is required at my school so I have many instances of such. Including coaching a basketball team for the disabled community, coaching a track team to the special olympics, and church volunteering as well
-AKC Dog-showing national title holder
-Choir leader at school and at my church
-diversity club leader and medical club

Awards:
-National Honor Society
-National Latin Honor Society (plus significant scores and awards on the National Latin Exams)
-Gold Award for Girl Scouts (The highest honor you can receive as a Girl Scout. Completely individual work and planning - I planned a job seminar/workshop for unemployed women in shelters in the Chicago and suburban community. This was able to provide jobs for hundreds of women in Chicago, who previously were either endangered in their home, lacked motivation and leadership skills, or went through a divorce and now were in need of a job.)
-In addition to this Gold Award Project I upkeep a website which raises awareness about the issue of unemployment in today's economy, how people can help, and a list of places looking for employees.

Work/Internship
i got a grant from the american cancer society to research chemotherapy treatment and effects, like peripheral neuropathy, the past summer and am working with the other researchers on publishing some findings!

*personal statements should be the strongest point of my app - all my teachers that have read my essays say they are unbelievable so that's a plus!

sorry if this is long! hopefully you enjoyed reading about a stranger's life/hopes/dreams though! if you even took the time to read this i appreciate you and if you would add some thoughts it'd really help!

i know im not the usual perfect score applicant, but i think i have a pretty unique story and transformation as a student and human being, and hey you never know if youre that one in a million, right?

you’ll EASILY get in because of your GPA. but i’d retake the SAT and try to get higher still

scderek4 - thanks! what would be the best score for me to get on the sat? realistically though i cannot get a perfect score and breaking 2300 would be challenging but i mean i could really push the books and never sleep and maybe do it??

I believe being Hispanic (no offence) is a huge plus since a lot of school sees Hispanic and African Americans as “minorities”. As for the academic achievements, you have strong ECs, GPA(although hard to judge without class rank), and SAT scores.

Cornell : Reach (Ivies are reach for 95% of applicants)
Berkley : Low reach

If I were you, I would take SAT II, especially Biology.

You’re math is pretty low for Berkeley. I’m not even sure if they consider writing as much. I know that you can get up your math really easily, so I wouldn’t stress too much about getting a perfect score.

The way you worded your AP list makes it seem like your AP’s or scores were weak, so we’d have to know them to get a better view (did you get all 5’s, were they challenging, etc.). Your extra curricular is where you really stand out and is where I would push to show in your essays. With a great essay, I think you have a great shot!

rshin95 - at my school freshmen and sophomores cant take any aps no questions asked, unfortunately.
max you can take as a junior is 2, which i did got (scored 4 and 5) also took the english lang without taking the course and got a 5. this year im taking 3 aps which i had to push my counselor to allow me to do! every course and teacher at my school is extremely challenging and the grading scale is unforgiving! do you think berkeley cares much about aps (obviously they do but is that a large factor?)
and also standardized math is not my strong suit but ive been practicing and hoping i can break the 700 !

tkim554 thanks for your input! do you think i can take the sat ii in november or will that be too late?

***ALSO to whoevers reading - what do you think my chances are with UCLA compared to Berkelely?

For ED, November SAT is definitely late. I believe cornell requires SAT II so you should take it in October.

im applying to cornel cals so there arent any subject tests required luckily - i took some back in the day but im not sure if i love my scores

@tkim5574: UCs don’t use affirmative action, just so you know

STheart yeah this is true but do you think they still might be interested in boosting their diversity??

URM

Cornell: Solid chances
UCB is not that difficult to get in. Good luck!

20more - thanks for your help! do you know if cornell places a lot of emphasis on freshman grades or the urm status? the gpa i provided does not include my freshman grades since UC does not calculate that. and ive heard rumors that cornell really likes diversity out of all the ivies…idk what the veracity of that is though

I’d definitely say a match! You’ve got really solid stats! Chance back?
