UC Berkeley Chances?

I'm just going to copy/paste my question from yahoo answers.

I'm a student from Turkey who moved to the states 4 years ago. I'm also a U.S citizen and I have some questions about getting in to UC Berkeley.

Some information about me :
I attended a high school in Milwaukee. My overall gpa is about 3.0. I got bad grades(around 2.0) during my freshman and sophomore year because I didn't know any English when I started HS. I studied hard during my junior and senior year and got a gpa of 3.6 both years. I didn't take any AP course in HS.
My SAT score is pretty low also. It is around 1650.
Right now I'm going to a Community College at Milwaukee which is called MATC. I'm done with 1st semester and my gpa is 3.8. I want to be a civil engineer so I'm taking classes like Calc, physics, etc
I played 4 years of soccer and 3 years of basketball in high school. I also played soccer this year for my community college. I also volunteer at a hospital.

Now like I said I want to transfer to UC Berkeley. I know it is hard to transfer from out of state. That's why I'm thinking of moving to California and attending a community college there for 1 year. Then apply to Berkeley for my Junior year.

My questions are

1)Does my hs gpa still matter when I'm applying there for my Junior year?
2)Does my SAT score still matter when I'm applying there for my Junior year?
3)Is it easy to get good grades in Community Colleges in California? Would it be similar to the community college that I'm attending right now?
4)I heard some community colleges in California have contracts with UC which allows a guarantee get in. Does this apply for UC Berkeley?
5)Looking at the info I provided, do I have any chance of getting in to Berkeley?
6)What are some other things that I can do to get in to Berkeley?

I don’t know much about transfer applicants, but I thought it would be in your interest to let you know that the filing period for the fall quarter/semester ended on November 30th. This was definitely for undergrad, but I’m not sure about transfer applicants.

Is that for Berkeley or community colleges? Because I’m a freshman right now. I will be attending a community college for my sophomore year if I move to California. Then I will apply to Berkeley for my Junior year.

Your HS grades and SAT svores will not matter for junior transfer.

There are no guaranteed transfers to Berkeley.

Keep in mind that you will have to pay out of state rates at the CC and then at Berkeley, with no aid but any Federal you may qualify for.

If you are applying as a TRANSFERRING student, highschool grades has LITTLE TO NO impact on your chance.

SAT score is not even considered for transferring students since many who major in math/science/engineering took linear algebra, and differential equation which is 10x harder than the SAT and before transfer, everyone has to take at least 1-2 college level English writting courses so SAT is not really needed. That is how I think why they don’t consider SAT score.

If you are talking about community colleges (CC) solely, I would say getting a good grade requires the same efforts regardless which CC you choose. Ultimately, good grades depends on YOU, not the school!

Yep, usually they call it a TAP (transferring Alliance Program) program if i’m not wrong (at least we have TAP in 2006). I know UCI, UCLA… some others have it but UC Berkeley has no such program (not sure now, you can check around).

Again, they only consider your COLLEGE GPA. Your GPA is average for civil engineering candidates so i would say you have 50/50. You can boost your score with your extra-curriculum activities and very good essays.

To increase your chance, do the following:
A. VERY VERY VERY IMPORTANT: FINISH ALL THE REQUIRED COURSES (I can’t emphasize this enough but i have seen tons of 4.0 GPA transferrign students get rejected because of missing 1-2 required courses).
B. Keep your GPA as high as possible (3.7++++)
C. Write a unique personal statements that tell why you deserve to be in UC Berkeley.
D. You need some LUCK :D

My background: I were accepted to both UCLA and UC Berkeley in math major as a transfer back in 2006. I chose UCLA over UC Berkeley though even though UC Berkeley math department is #1 or #2 in the world i believe.

My plan is to pay out of state rates at the CC and pay in state rates at Berkeley. Or do I have to pay out of state rates at Berkeley too?

From what I read I get the idea of if I live in California for 1 year that makes me a resident which allows me to pay in state rates at Berkeley. Am I mistaken here?

I’m followin UW-Madison’s civil engineering curriculum for required courses. First semester I took Calc 1 - College Chemistry 1 - English 1 - Spanish . Next semester I will be taking Calc 2 - College Chemistry 2 - Speech - Spanish and Microeconomics.

I’m not sure what I’m going to take during my sophomore year but i know it will include calc 3 , physics 1/2, some humanities to help me with depth and breadth.

Are these classes seem fine to you? Or am I missing some important ones?
