UC Berkeley - Class of 2020 Waitlist

WL member checking in! I will most likely opt in in the next few days. Glad to see there are others in the same boat

Was anyone else wait listed for Genetics, Genomics & Development?

@mrv819 Look at published numbers of waitlisted students admitted as proof UCB actually does use their waitlist (unlike some other schools). You are all in a good position and so stay hopeful. I’m on here for my son, but I can personally testify to the legitimacy of UCB’s waitlist because that’s how I got in years ago. I was waitlisted and then soon given the opportunity to start in Spring. UCB Haas Business School, Class of 1996.

@cdart03 I was!

I was wondering if the information given below is good enough to submit for opting in with new information.

Participated in international music festival in Hawaii and got first place with Chamber Orchestra(solo Viola)
Participated in the same festival and got second place with wind ensemble(narrator/acting)
Participated in Music for All festival in Indianapolis(solo Viola)
Joined track and field
Participated in interact charity dinner
Joined Act of Random Kindness Club
Got invited to play in Japan( unable to attend due to financial issues)
Created a music recital for elementary students
Won first place in color guard(dancing)
Invited to play at the Ghiradelli Chocolate Factory and Hayward Unified School District Council
Promoted to be Head of Orchestra

It seems like a lot but it has happened after submitting application. I’ve done more but this is what I had in mind.

Yea waitlist crew. My major is industrial engineering. Quick question - how many engineering majors get off the waitlist? I know the yield for the engineering school is around 45% which is higher than the national average (35%) which means more people choose berkeley and less spots for people like me. Has anyone in Eng. got off the waitlist?

How do the “spring grades” work? Even by April 18th my transcript will only display 1st semester grades, so is it a problem to not show them my current grades?

I agree with @kornido . Correct me if I’m wrong but for example, if about 3,000 people were on wait list and about 2,000 opted in and only about 400 got admitted, I feel like the 2,000 that opted in were offered admission but only 400 accepted the offer. And does wait list have priority over people appealing? Because if that’s the case my friend appealed last year and he got in

How does one send in current grades? All a’s 1st semester and 1st quarter of 2nd semster but how do i tell themt hat?

I find the CC threads interesting because people with competitive stats think they should be in. Universities are looking for a well rounded class. It would be incredibly boring if the admitted all high scoring students. Don’t forget some people who are accepted have incredible talents that are not evident by GPA and test scores. Whatever is required, some of the admits do enough to disrupt your idea of who they should admit. I turned down UCB because I didn’t get that feeling that I got at UCLA. And I am sure that the schools are more similar than I perceived at the time. I can tell you that UCLA has a mix of really talented people and they got the admission formula right! - innovation happens when ideas collide. You got wait listed because they already have someone just like you. You are still great!

For the senior grades, it’s split up into Fall, Winter, and Spring…Do they want quarter grades then? Or does it just depend on your school’s system? My school is does semesters so should I just put final 1st semester grades in for Fall and leave everything else blank?

@werebats I think UCB waitlist is ranked

@FlyingLark At this point, I wouldn’t take any risk. I would place a note in the course name at the end such as “1st Semester”.

@Yellowdude19 @kornido Is the the yield rate for waitlisted candidate much worse? If you use the typical yield rate of 37% for Berkeley, then 400 admitted students means that UCB offered this to at least 1081 waitlisted candidates.

I also wonder whether OOS would have more changes in a wait list. The reason being… I would assume that OOS may decline more than in-state just because of the price tag. If the objective for UCB is to keep their expectations for revenue constant, then UCB would have incentives to replace an OOS with an OOS and so on.

Hi @Yellowdude19 . You have really great achievements, but try to list everything seem to be diluting your image.

For instance, you listed “Promoted to be Head of Orchestra” at the very end, but this seems an opportunity to talk about how your leadership provide short-term impact and results. (So, talking about “Joined track and field” , etc seems to make very difficult to understand what is real gold nugget that will shine you away from the wait list.

I got in SCS , but to be absolutely sincere I thought I had no chances. I had some big failures in High school. My first SATIIs had some horrible grades. It appears to me that CMU looks for “raw” intellectual power – so it may be just a question of how you provide a happy end to everything that challenged you through life.

@kna477 The UC Waitlist FAQ link I posted earlier states the waitlist is NOT ranked so your number on the list has no bearing. If position on the waitlist mattered, it wouldn’t make sense that they ask for your recent grades and optional essay. The website also states that each UC is different - some have a campus wide general enrollment quota to meet and some are not general, as in they have specific #s to hit for each department.

Just spent the afternoon walking down Memory Lane, taking my son on a personal tour of the UCB today. So nice.

@kornido Do they ask for updated grades in a file or something? How does it work? My bf got waitlisted but has too much pride to ask for help outside a narrow group of people…

@Kna477 Your bf owes you a good home cooked dinner for your support. If he logs into his portal to opt-in to the waitlist, he’ll be prompted for recent grades and an optional essay (no topic given, whatever he wants the admissions to know).
