Not sure if this is the right place to post this question ...but are there any former CC students who transferred to Cal and ended up double majoring? If so, what was that process like to declare a second major. According to Cal's website (Office of Undergraduate Advising: Double Majors and Simultaneous Degrees) its "very challenging to declare another major." Not sure if thats only because one must finish all pre-reqs for both majors by the end of Fall or because the process to declare another major itself is just difficult.

Anyways, if anyone has any insight on this, please share...

I have seen many people post around the forums that they are double majoring or plan on double majoring once at Cal. Since you are admitted by division, you declare your major at CalSO, I believe. It’s definitely doable.

In some cases, you will have prereqs to complete once at a UC because for some majors, not 100% of prereqs are offered at a CCC. You might be able to pull of a double major if you stayed an extra year.

“one must finish all pre-reqs for both majors by the end of Fall”

@cherryvaseline, where’d you get that information? And is it all pre-reqs, as in all lower-division classes for the major, or just the minimum number of pre-reqs needed to declare the major?

I applied to CNR and wanted a simultaneous degree in L&S. L&S told me I had to wait one semester before applying to declare. In the mean time, I was expected to fulfill a requirement or two to show that I actually intended on completing the proposed major.

I don’t know about the other colleges, but in CNR you can declare a double major whenever as long both each major advisor signed off. Wasn’t too time consuming. I’d say just make sure you have everything in order when you go to meet each advisor. Pre-plan your proposed schedule, taking into account when courses are offered (every other spring, fall, etc…) and have fallback options. If your proposed schedule is really rigid, it’s likely you’ll get screwed when class schedules come out. You’re also granted an extra semester so you can take advantage of that. Lastly, just be aware if you’re pushing 16-19 credits a semester it can get daunting real fast. Enjoy your time at Cal and make sure you’re double majoring for the right reasons.

hi altschool, i must have been misinformed. the cal website really only says that transfers must declare before the beginning of their second semester. (http://ls-advise.berkeley.edu/major/declare.html)…but nothing about actually completing pre-reqs, only that you have to be able to finish all requirements for both majors by a certain time. aka, dont plan on spending another 4 or 5 years attempting two degrees.

thanks skwz, that’s really helpful…i’m not making any solid plans now, until i actually speak to an advisor. just looking a little more into what the options may be.
