Doing this for my brother
He was accepted for Sociology
GPA: 3.85
Pre-reqs: all done.
The financial aid weird though they offered him way less at Berkeley (13k) than Davis (23k). But, we receive Cal Grant A and Pell Grant so shouldn’t that be the same at every school? Anyone know why this is or if it is just a mistake?
REJECTED
major: computer science
gpa: 4.0
ecs: tons that I have been doing for more than 5 years
work: coding tutor and math tutor
rejected: Berkeley and Davis
accepted: UCI with Regents, UCSC with Regents, UCR with Regents
Pending: UCLA, UCSD, UCSB, USC
honestly ucla is my dream school and I’m so scared for admissions next week. its come to the point where I have so much ucla merch from summer session and camps and visits that its become part of my personality. if I don’t get in I think Im just going to be sad AGAIN. i was kind of disappointed about not getting into Berkeley but it just makes me more sad that I probably wont get into ucla since I didn’t get into Berkeley
( I got waitlisted then rejected as a freshman last year, but I’ve been taking CC classes since junior year of hs so i will have about 95 quarter units by the end of spring)
In my contract, it says that I have to submit high school transcript, but in CalCentral, it doesn’t list “submit HS transcript” as to do item. Does anyone else have this too?
I’m assuming you’re a transfer student if you applied to a specific major (if not just ignore this).
You should be fine. 25% of econ majors don’t accept admission, so there should be around 50-100 seats opening up for waitlisted students. So as long as you’re in the top 1% of non-accepted applicants (and seeing as you have a 4.0 you may be), you’re probably going to get in. If you’re in Clac 3 you’re much better at math than I am, so I’ll post these stats for you to review: https://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/infocenter/transfers-major
If you do get rejected in the end, it’s not because of your grades. You’re obviously a smart student, but universities place just as heavy of an emphasis on your extracurricular; in addition to your personality. Judging by the caps lock reaction you gave, they may have not liked how you present yourself.
ECs:
_One summer research internship at UC Berkeley (for people who want to get into UC Berkeley in the future, please check out TTE, literally all the people who got into this internship are accepted)
_One theoretical machine learning summer research internship at a top university (not Berkeley) in this field.
_One Software Engineering internship at a top company.
_Ranked first in a math contest and data analytic contest.
_Got some pretigious scholarships at my school.
School:
_Bunch of honor math classes, honor economic classes, …
_Took a lot of stem courses but were not required.
_Only had data structures with no CS 61A, CS 61C and CS 70.
Essays:
_I think it’s decent. I had people working at UC Berkeley admission check it for me. In the essay, I talked about how I learnt English from scratch in just two years, worked while studying full-time and obtained internships.
This website really helped me about the the U.S college admission when I came to the U.S so I dedcided to give one tip for future STEM applicants if they came across my post. Please apply to internships, either industry or research. It is a great way to stand out among the pool of highly qualified applicants (and they paid !!!), and it shocked me that a lot of students weren’t even aware of that. Just make sure get to know some professors so they can write for you strong letter recommendations, and do side projects and clubs so you have something to talk about in the essays. To search for research internship, check out the website NSF REU, TTE UC Berkeley, DOE for community colleges, MIT hayward, and many other places. To search for software engineering internships, look around your local areas. Make sure put a lot of side projects on your resume (preferably web development, no need for fancy idea app, just make 3 to 4 web apps that work so you can talk about them). You don’t need to be at 4-year university to get an internship. You can do that as a community college student too. If a guy like me who didn’t know any English 2 years ago could get it, you can certainly do it !!!
Accepted. Super thankful, and my heart goes out to anybody who did not get accepted—just some advice to any future applicant. Write your essays by yourself. Don’t let somebody tell your story for you! My biggest concern was not having somebody proofread my essay, but thankfully I was able to do enough to get accepted. Take care, everyone, its been real!

ECs: Research Assistant in PE, Debate Coach, Model UN officer, volunteer work at a legal nonprofit, campus radio. I started getting involved in ECs my sophomore year of college, wasn’t as involved as a freshman.
I’m a little surprised too. I guess my essays weren’t that great. I was also near the transfer unit max for Berkeley.
Does anybody know how many transfer students choose to live in the dorms rather than finding apartments in the area? Trying to determine the best route.
