it is NOT the state of Michigan ALLOW the financial aid to OOS, it is UMich has raised huge amount of endowment and decided to use it help low income students. It is in a form of institution grant. They have met the need of all in-state students for a long time and started this year, they are going to meet the need of OOS students with less than $90k family income and $50k asset. It is one of the few public school that provide generous financial to OOS students. It does not use any tax money from Michigan for that purpose.
@“Hassan Zaidi”
Stop comparing what one net price calculator says to what another says. Each school has a different way of computing need based aid…and often a VERY different way of computing need based aid for OOS students…and even a different way for transfers.
The net price calculators are typically set up for FIRST year entering freshmen. If the NPC doesn’t ask if you are a transfer…you need to take the results with a GIGANTIC grain of salt. Many colleges are not particularly generous with transfer student need based aid, and especially for OOS students at public universities. Many colleges that meet need for incoming freshmen do NOT for transfers.
You need to talk to the transfer advisor at YOUR CC. Cost wise, your best bet will probably be your instate publics…in YOUR state…because likely, the CC has an articulation agree, ent with them to accept your classes…which is important…and some probably have some aid for CC transfers.
University of Michigan offers need based aid to OOS students.
https://finaid.umich.edu/wp-content/uploads/transferbrochure-2018_non-res.pdf
California…does not offer a dime of need based aid to OOS students at its public universities.
And you wrote this…in September…so WHERE did you apply for college admission for fall 2018…or didn’t you?
If the CC courses you are taking are fulfilling your HS graduation requirements…you would be applying as a freshman…did you do THAT?
And it seems you might be from Maryland. What is the matter with UMD?
Yes that’s me but I want to do like 40 credits and look to transfer because also I didn’t do any ECs and back in high school there were no APs nor college preparatory material. In fact like 90 percent of the students like a 4.00 easily. It was a joke.
I do not think it is fair to state that UMD is in the same rigor or level as University of Michigan or Berkeley.
Even though many say that rankings are bogus, they are the reason why institutions like harvard and stanford are the best to attend as they maintain a top five rankings in everything according to US News and World Report.
I think your comprehension of English needs work.
Reread and interpret @thumper1’s statement.
The statement asks why you would not consider UMD?
Do you understand that most universities in each state help their own residents?
Each university has amazing students whose parents possibly don’t have the money to send their children out of state.
I think you are very confused about how the universities work.
You don’t pick a university and assume that they all have to be the same price or teach the same things.
They are public or private. Some have sports teams, some don’t. Some are in rural (farming) communities some are in urban (cities) areas. Some are technical schools and some focus on liberal arts.
Private universities have the exact same price for everyone from any state. They are very expensive. They use their own monies to fund their schools and their students.
It doesn’t really matter where you get your degree as long as you graduate.
Exactly @thumper1’s statement was “What is the matter with UMD” this gave an implication that UMD and Umich are in the same level since they are state schools and that is just insulting the true name of Michigan.
@“aunt bea” All I know is that there are some schools that are well known in certain departments and some schools that are not. And it is clear that @thumper1 statement suggested that UMD and Umich are in the same rigor in terms of academics. There is a harvard and then is morgan state university, and there is a difference in which one you attend. Just look at Us News and World Report and you will know that there are some public universities that are near the level of the ivy league and some you don’t deserve the credit for anything.
No, they did not suggest UMD is in the same tier as UMich/CAL or not. They are saying UMD is an affordable option for you and why you do not consider it. Period.
Okay sorry on my part because I have talked to many about this and many people that I have talked to always say that these schools are public and there is no difference. By the way for UMD I would be paying 1k less than michigan based upon their net price calculator
Also I want to attend a good institution so I can prove to my Peers that it is possible for community college to transfer over to better universities especially their state school like UMD
^^^^
WOW! Your English skills are misinterpreting the meanings of sentences.
Is this a joke thread?
“What is the matter?” means “what is the issue/concern/problem/complication”?
Nowhere in that statement did she discuss rigor nor rankings nor competition. Get your head out of US News and read for meaning (semantics).
Honestly, if you didn’t know that universities are different in everything AND, that your written language comprehension is very weak, you wouldn’t do well at any “ranked” schools (UMD May be too difficult for you.)
Well, then go to Michigan. Why worry about Berkeley?
@“aunt bea” you know what you are right I cannot understand most things well but you know I will assure you that which ever institution I attend I’ll graduate with a 4.00 and that’s a promise I’ll make. Yes the path for me will be difficult but I will assure you for sure that I will do well. Infact you remind me of my high school science teacher who always would say I would never do well on her exams and she was right but when I went to Community college all down but once I started taking courses in program of study for the first time I saw a bunch of A’s and in high school I never had a good gpa and now I do.
I did not ever say that UMD and Michigan are the same. But really…both are excellent flagship and research universities.
There is nothing magic about Michigan vs UMD…especially if you can afford to attend UMD and you can’t afford to attend Michigan.
Sorry, but I will repeat what I said…we know a number if very successful UMD grads who have done very well and were very positive about their time at UMD.
Bottom line for you…Cal won’t be affordable. They give NO need based aid to out of state students. Period. It doesn’t matter what that school ranking is for you…you won’t be getting need based aid there.
Michigan will give you aid IF your income is below a certain threshold.
But I still ask…what’s wrong with UMD? It’s YOUR instate flagship. Very likely, the cost will be a good one.
It sounds like you are a HS senior now. Do you plan to take a gap year before applying to Michigan or wherever? Or do you plan to take CC courses? Or what?
This is a ridiculous way to choose a college.
So your peers are guiding your decisions??? You have to prove something to them? Why?
So let me see if I have this right. A community college student can transfer to a better university than their state school? Correct?
So how do you prove to your peers that CC students in California can do better than their state schools? Berkeley is the state school you wanted to apply to but, because it is a state school, the rigor is not as good, huh? It is a state school.
Oh that’s right . . . . in our state of California, our CC students apply to their state public schools: UCLA, UCB, UCSD, UCDavis, UCSB, UCSC, UCR, UCM. Cal Polys, LB SDSU, CHICO, (plus the rest of the 23)
Guess our state will have to tell the hundreds of thousands of students, who are OOS and clamoring to get into our paltry schools, that these are “state schools” and although ranked as some of the best in the world, they don’t merit any real consideration because they are, after all, “state schools”.
The University of Michigan is also a “state” school. They receive lots of CC students from their state who really want to get in.
Virginia also has some “state schools” as does Washington, Maryland, Massachusetts, Texas, Pennsylvania, and the rest of the nation.
FWIW: some of the BEST schools are state schools and you could not do any better than to go to some of these great institutions in each of our states. You want to go to two of them.
@“Hassan Zaidi” good luck to you! Don’t let anyone on here get you down, you sound like you have drive. Just follow your gut, get in where you can, and don’t let any naysayers get in your way.
