UC Berkeley Haas 2018 Transfer Thread

LOL this prompt cracks me up. Humble people probably wouldn’t be discussing how humble they are or how to cultivate it in their lives - they just ARE, and are too humble to analyze it. Oh, Cal, you beautiful deranged sunfish.

TIMES UP!!!

Good luck everyone…

Time for the good old waiting game…#april27

Everyone:

Let us know in March/April what the results are. Don’t leave us hanging.

OK so I have a really weird app that I would love some feedback on. I had very significant extenuating circumstances that I included in my app and they caused me to mess up at first. I had 4 C’s and 4 B’s over the course of my first 4 semesters. Since then I’ve had straight A’s for over 60 units now with a very heavy course load. My prerequisites are all completed and perfect with the exception of a B in Stats.

What do you think? I kinda already accepted that I’ll be rejected (no pun intended) but at least I gave it a shot right?

@YoursTruly4ever how do I get a leadership position in any organizations or clubs. There are very few and the spots are pretty much filled. Do I have to become popular so that people will vote for me? I don’t know what to do. I’ve got a 3.96 GPA and a 3.9 Major GPA but I don’t know how to reach out and become a real contributing member of society. I want to help my community out with all my heart but I just dont know how.

@GoodAfternoonSir You really don’t have to be popular to get a leadership position. Most student gov positions are appointed at my school. The best approach is to walk in their office and ask the first person you see how to get involved. Most people are very intimidated to come in and ask but you cant get in if you dont ask. If you dont get picked for whatever reason you can still volunteer. I think I got my first position because I would always study in the student gov office so I got to meet everyone. I recommend the same.

@GoodAfternoonSir Honestly, there’s so much more to leadership than just being the president of a student organization or holding an officer position in a club. I am a math tutor at my school so I wrote about how I lead my students through obstacles and help them do their best (Obviously i wrote in more detail lol). You could even be writing about how you’re responsible of taking care of your siblings or dropping them to school or being in charge of other family issues. I also talked about how I had to take care of my family’s financial issues in absence of my dad. These are all leadership qualities. Think deep and write about a time when you feel like you had to take the initiative or be in control of a situation.

Serious question… What makes this program so popular and different from other schools’ business programs?

Bueller…? Bueller…?

@Nontradional Sorry, I wasn’t aware that’s what AK was asking.

@Undercrackers I understand your argument, but I disagree. The prompt wasn’t asking anyone to discuss how humble they are. Cultivating humility is at the core of their program as evidenced by their defining principles. The prompt forced young adults to honestly evaluate themselves and their goals within the larger society.

@Goodafternoonsir I agree with AK and YoursTruly. Leadership isn’t defined by obtaining a title in a club. If you’re unable to position yourself in time for application season then I would suggest you strategize and consider establishing yourself through community involvement. Haas preaches quality over quantity. Find something you’re passionate about and tackle projects (different than just volunteering). This can definitely help to differentiate yourself from the applicant pool. At the end of the day, you need to efficiently utilize your time so that you’re able to discuss your contributions when you apply.

@mcmc1234 In my opinion Haas is the most distinguishable program because of their principles. They create a unique culture in comparison to other schools. Also, there is plenty of upsides that drives the popularity. It’s tied with Ross as the #3 undergraduate business school in the nation, it’s ideally located, and Haas arguably yields the best ROI. Not to mention it’s Berkeley, “the number one public institution in the nation.”

Anyone else FREAKING OUT about the idea of an interview? The very real possibility of it making/breaking your chances. I believe I’m a pretty strong interviewee but the nerves continue to be very real. Also, that’s really the only thing to look forward to other than our admission decision.

As much as i don’t want to be interviewed, I have a strong feeling that I’m going to be on the list. Most of the people i know at haas got interviewed and they said that it was super chill. The interviewer doesn’t know anything about you and he/she doesn’t get to see your application. My mentor, who’s at haas, said that he didn’t really get asked any questions and they just had a chill conversation. He said that they just want to see if you can talk haha. I’m assuming that if you have a chill conversation with the interviewer then you’re pretty much in already and they just want to look at you. But they’re definitely leaning more towards interviewing as many applicants as they can.

SDSFCalifornia

How do these 4 principles translate into the classroom?

I was told by a Haas undergrad advisor, that students after Haas do not normally continue with school. Anyone know why?

It seems like people are discussing the possibility of interviews - has anyone been notified yet about being asked to attend one yet?

@Ak1097 curious, but what makes you feel strongly that you’ll be on the list for an interview?

@hopesolo

  1. they’re leaning more and more towards interviews every year(they mentioned this at the haas orientantion that i attended last semester).
  2. People I know who had similar stats to me also got interviewed
  3. Story of my life. I always tend to end up in least desirable situations lol.

Not implying any superiority haha its just a gut feeling. Chances are, most of the competitive/eligible applicants will probably end up getting interviewed.

@Ak1097

Thanks for the info. Have you or know of anyone who has received any notification of being asked to interview yet?

I certainly don’t see an interview as a least desirable situation, if anything its just another opportunity to let them see who you are, which is a plus in my book.

@hopesolo
Nope I do not. I believe the invites will begin going out sometime during the latter half of march.
