UC Berkeley Transfer Thread 2018

I am wondering who has already admitted in recently for 2018 transfer decision. I am quite anxious about the waiting period.

@Snoozekitten No, I live in LA, and honestly really dislike the vibe and atmosphere at Berkeley. I’d pick UCLA or USC over Berkeley in a heartbeat.

@SmartJarhead Same here. I’ve been up there multiple times in the past couple of years for academic stuff, and I got the impression every time that a lot of the students are ostentatious about their political views. Like, I’m a very liberal person, but there’s a distinction that must be made between encouraging social consciousness and contributing to a politically polarized, hostile environment. Frankly, many of UCLA’s departments are either on par or surpass Berkeley’s, besides Business Admin and EECS. It’s still an amazing school in its own right, but I don’t feel like I’d personally be happy there. I applied on a whim and I still hope I get accepted, but I’ve had a really hard time trying to actually visualize myself attending the school.

@Psychiatrist Yup that’s exactly how I feel about it.

Please chance me!

One-Year Transfer Applicant from California CC.
68 Semester Units.
IGETC finishing in Spring.
ALL FOUR major pre-requisites finished in Spring.

Major: History
GPA: 4.0 (4 Courses in Fall, 2 in Winter)
EC: All filled out. Volunteer, work experience.

I heard from some people that Berkeley discriminates against One Year Applicants, while some have said that it doesn’t matter. Also, how do you guys think they’ll view me finishing all four of my pre-req courses in the Spring? I did not know as much in Fall and Winter, so I made sure to stack it all up in the Spring.

Grateful for any information.

Please help!

thoughts?

@farquad24 One-year transfer applicant means that you would have sophomore standing by the time you transfer. With 68 semester units, completed IGETC, and finished major pre-reqs, you will have junior standing. You should have no problem with your status regarding being a one-year transfer.

I was one myself, since I went to CC in my senior year but was still a HS student. I then decided to continue at a CC and then transfer. I was Econ and made it, but I decided to do EEP b/c I don’t like the Econ major vibe and other reasons.

@TheLongRun By any chance, do you know how Berkeley views applicants who finish pre-requisite courses or IGETC courses in the Spring semester?

@farquad24 from what I know, having pre-requisites in progress will hurt your chances of getting in. After GPA, I would say completing pre-requisites before the spring is the second most important thing (followed closely by PIQs, then ECs). Not to sound harsh, but I don’t know how an admissions reader would be able to accurately evaluate an applicant under a major if they haven’t completed a single major preparation course in that major.

@Snoozekitten Hey, I’m in a similar situation so I’d love to talk about it with you. Of course, we both have to get the actual offer from Davis first, as we’ve only been invited at this point. But if I actually get selected for Regents for Davis, I’m seriously considering it and Berkeley is not an auto-enroll because of that. The perks are just too intriguing. the 15k is one thing, but the research opportunities and priority registration are very tempting. Think about it, you could ratemyprofessor search for all your available classes and pick the best professors at the times that you want and thus have the best chance for high grades. Because I am a pre-med student, it doesn’t matter whether I graduate from Davis or Berkeley, what matters more are high grades, MCAT score, and ECs, none of which have to do with prestige of university. But Berkeley is my dream school, the #1 public university in the nation so that is also intriguing. I guess we’re gonna have to make a decision real soon. I’d recommend you to go search on forums/sites relevant to your career choice, and see what people have to say about your situation, or ppl who posted similar situations as our’s. What’s interesting is that the due date for Regents for Davis got extended to the 17th due to technical difficulties. So it seems like they might have to make a decision within one week or something of who gets the scholarship and who doesn’t.

@farquad24 I’m with kevin on this. As you’ve said, they’re already extra strict with 1-year transfers to begin with, so not having any major courses done by the time they look at your app is a big no-no despite the 4.0 GPA. I’d say it definitely hurts your chances, esp. since they only have six courses to look at in your entire application, and only four of them are they guaranteed to look at. (any courses after fall aren’t calculated into the GPA). But hey, I wouldn’t say your chances are absolutely zero it’s just there are so many students you’re competing with who are >1 year transfers and have all those courses done already on the app.

@Snoozekitten @ericbadmon I’m in the same position too! I actually had a heart to heart with a couple of my friends who went to ucla and Berkeley about the situation. They pretty much unanimously said that the perks of regents shouldn’t be passed up, ESPECIALLY if you’re planning on graduate school. At the top UCs like Berkeley and ucla, not only can it be a big struggle to get your desired classes and professors, but it’s also far more competitive to land research positions (which I need to have in order to get into a clinical psych grad program).
While my friends loved the schools they went to, most of them realized how easy it was to be drowned out by all of the other students. For graduate school, it’s better to be top of your class at a less prestigious school than to be an average or below average student at a top school.
At this point, I feel like if I’m granted the regents scholarship, I will go to davis. If not, and I’m accepted to ucla or Berkeley, I will choose one of those.

From an outsiders perspective regents is an offer you can’t refuse, especially if grad school is on the table.

hello all,

long time reader, first time poster. if any of you lovely ppl would like to chance me that would be gr8 but i am also posting because I like to read other peoples chances, so maybe you’d like to read mine too??

other:
other: I’m pretty gay, but i don’t think i mentioned it (only clicked the box) spanish speaking, latina
essays: i feel like they were p good in the end i had a berkeley admissions officer read and made those changes
what im worried about: i did not go to cc straight from highschool. my first semester i was at a 4 year and then switched to bcc. i am hoping that this will not negativley effect me, but we will see what happens.

good luck to you all and see you all here on the 27th either excited or depressed

go bears baby

@ohbeebee LOL more similarities!!! Yeah that’s what everyone seems to be saying when I go on studentdoctor forums (I’m premed). Everyone is saying take regents at UC davis
And yeah I heard the grade deflation thing is the real deal. But i heard it’s mainly for the sciences, esp. the lower division chem/bio courses since they are supposed to weed out students. And because I’m premed, I’m gonna have to take at least some of those classes there. Of course I could take em at a CC after I graduate, (i actually started some already) but apparently adcoms look negatively at pre-med prereqs being taken at a CC. So I’m really considering it… of course we all have to get it first. Those perks just sound too awesome, but it’s freaking Berkeley and LA lol, like those are all of our dream schools I’m pretty sure.

Here’s my status:

I am a CCC student from applying for Fall 2018

Overall GPA: 3.91
Major GPA: 3.89

Major: EECS

IGETC: No since not suggested for college of engineering

TAP: YES

EC’s/work:

Worked at an established High Tech Company for an internship as a Software developer, did some pretty cool stuff 30+ hrs/week for summer
Tutor for Math, Physics, Computer Science (Created a tutoring school online that over 2,000 people in 100+ countries participated in for free)
AMATYC Math Competition top 5 winner at my college
Game Design Certificate: (programmed and published games onto arcade website) one of which trended for almost 1 day
Executive position at student government
A few positions at stem related clubs
NASA Aerospace Scholar Program (Participated in 4 day competition sponsored by NASA)
Tutor/Mentor for a private company
Volunteer at local Soup Kitchen (place near and dear to me)
Won the only STEM scholarship at my school one year
Volunteer at Grandma’s retirement home for a while and taught her along with other residents how to use social media to keep in touch with family/old friends
Phi Theta Kappa Member

Self Supported or through scholarships

Essays: solid 9.5/10; Tap Counselor was amazed.

Only reason why I don’t have a 4.0 is because I was facing some personal issues which forced me to miss a total of 5 weeks during the term (also dropped a class with a W to lessen my load during the time) and by the time I came back, finals were near.

Major course:
On my way to finishing after this quarter

Chance me if you can
Good Luck !!!

@ericbadmon I KNOW! It’s freaking me out, maybe we are twins that were separated at birth :))
Yeah part of me would feel stupid for rejecting ucla or Berkeley if I’m accepted, especially since I’ve wanted to go for so long. But I also dont want to make undergrad harder for myself than I have to.
I’ve kind of lost hope for berkeley though, considering I’m missing the calculus pre-req for psych. I literally didn’t have time to take all of the prereqs for that class. Sucks that it’s such a popular major they added calc as a weeder class :frowning:

@ericbadmon @ohbeebee Take the regents, if debt and money is an issue, get out of undergrad debt free, if its not then wait for berkeley and UCLA.

I’m curious about this because on my portal it says “… on or before April 27.” Why is it worded like that if they really only release decisions on the 27th?
Thank you for the info, it’s easier to put the whole thing out of my mind knowing I won’t hear for a couple weeks.

@xaambi I guess maybe just a couple hours early…
