UC Berkeley Transfer Thread 2018

@svkashani I didn’t submit FAFSA because I wouldn’t qualify for it, and I still got the email, so I don’t think its based on financial need.

@LittleBear24 @tc00000 I go to DVC too, imagine the odds lol.

@LittleBear24 I also have a lower GPA because of a D I got in one class, which I’m retaking this semester, so I feel.

@hailey5799 lol yeah its a small world

@WolfOfCraigslist lol small world, I got it too J

I know it’s not supposed to mean anything but I may have had a mini breakdown over not getting an email… I blame the semester getting to its overwhelming peak plus the anticipation of decisions within 2 weeks LOL

^ I feel. I wish they hadn’t sent me that because it threw me off my game for about two/three hours while I was obsessing about it and then trying not to obsess about it, convincing myself it meant nothing. I can’t deal with all this fake scares, I have tests! I so feel though, the semester is coming into the last stretch and I’m an emotional mess between midterms now finals studying and final papers and decisions. Why the hell did I think 6 classes was a good idea? I will never do this again.

Sorry for the rant, just had to get that off my chest!

@hailey5799 i got this in high school and did not get into CAL and they asked for a letter of rec. So dont worry. it doesnt mean much

@Ohm888 Does she know how they select the people to apply?
I did not recieve an email.

@Ohm888 @pleaseacceptme69 Thanks for providing input about the scholarship emails. Hopefully a lot of applicants on this and other threads can benefit from your input and rest a bit easier!

I didn’t receive the email, and that’s kinda weird. I applied for both fafsa and eop; moreover, based on my financial situation, I need that scholarship stuff!

Major: CS (L&S)
Overall GPA: 4.0
Prereq: completed by Spr
IGETC: completed by Spr
100+ quarter units completed by Spr

It’s really hard to understand their selection criteria for this. If this is separate from the admission, why didn’t they send the email to every applicants so that they can decide by themselves?
It bothers me for nothing.

@AroMina how are your extra curricular activities? I ask because I applied for EECS and I have a 3.94 so a little lower than yours and I got the email. I have IGETC done and will also have all the Prereq done by spring with 100+ units however I think I had good extra curricular activities. I am also taking a class that actually articulates to CS61B Data Structures and I know it is hard to actually find a CC that offers this class and actually articulates.

@AroMina FWIW, when I applied a few years back I had a high GPA and 2 major-related internships and I’d started my own non-profit. I did not get invited. Someone said it had to do with stuff you checked at the very beginning of the application. I have no idea if that is true. But I got into Cal, so don’t worry. I did not apply for a scholarship after hearing about the emails (you can apply without an email invite - at least you could then), because they are all aimed at people with financial aid, and I did not have FA, which might be why I wasn’t sent an email. I believe only the Regents is open to merit as well as financial aid, although I might be wrong.

@Mitroyo I have some internship experience at startups as a senior computer programmer assistant for about 3 years. And I already took a data structures course, as well. I still need to take a lab class at Cal to fulfill the exact requirement, though. Well, I thk I’d better just wait for 15 days. I know that anxiety gives nothing to me now. Thx for replying.

@Ohm888 Thanks a lot. Your story really did help me feel free from the meaningless worry. I appreciate that.

@ohm888 Coming through clutch once again.

Thank you for the input and taking the time to hopefully put the craziness about the scholarship email to rest.

Wow so does everyone go to DVC orrrr… because I go there too! I’m currently freaking out because I didn’t receive the email so I think it is safe to say I’m having yet another reason to be stressed.

I feel like I stand a chance because my major is Media Studies with a 4.0 Major and Overall GPA. I’ve completed all required prereqs except for one which I am taking this semester along with finishing the other extra prereqs for the major. My essays were pretty good as well (I had like 10 people read them including an ex admissions officer). I don’t have many EC’s but I work 30 hours+ a week, am a member of Phi Theta Kappa, freelance interior design, and speak/coordinate for a club called Active Minds at Chabot College. I’m still really nervous so until April 27th I’ll keep biting my nails

@ericbadmon - I can relate to your dilemma because I am in the same boat. I would like to go to graduate school also but here is how I analyze my options - (assuming I get into UCB or UCLA):

  • If I go to UCD merely to get good grades and to look good for grad school, then I am taking a huge risk. What if for some reason beyond my control my GPA falls at UCD, OR Despite a resonable GPA I don’t get into the top tier graduate school then I will have the worst of everything.
  • If instead I go to UCB/LA I will at least have something to fall back on for my resume.

I worked my butt off for the past two years to have a shot at UCB/LA. I don’t want to forego the opportunity to go to the top public university in the world simply to game my GPA for grad school.
If after working my tail off at UCB/LA, I cannot go to a top tier graduate school, then so be it.
A bird in hand is better than 3-4 running in the bushes.

Again this is my perspective. Others are free to disagree.

@tman831 I have a 4.0 in a non-impacted major with all my prereqs done already and received no email. I also received no financial aid from any of the colleges i’ve been accepted to so far, except for UC Davis but that was Regents which is solely based on academics and “personal accomplishments.” From what I understand, the email is only sent to those eligible for financial aid which makes sense I didn’t get it… and as Ohm says it is a separate thing from admissions. Wouln’t worry too much about it, tho I was kinda bummed about it initially as well.

No need to fear @ohm888 is here

@hailey5799 that’s weird you received one without FAFSA. I think most of the people who got in on this thread are strong students including yourself but looking at threads from high school students, kids with 3.0 GPAs were getting the email so idk what it has to do with. People speculate it might be based on the things you check off for your scholarship interests and your leadership exp. Apparently the one for UCLA is only sent to the top echelon of candidates tho… key word apparently
