UC Berkeley Transfer Thread 2018

have you guys started on your applications?

@seaairuhh poli sci/history major here!

I’ve started filling out my basic information on the app but I still need to begin my personal insight questions.

I got everything filled out up to my personal insights, I still have to play around with my extracurriculars section though.

for the required question of the personal insights, i want to write that i have prepared for upper div courses by completing major prep courses by spring. but thats not true for some of the UCs. what do you guys think i should do?

For a question like that, you want to explain your preparation outside of classroom instruction. They can see your transcript and see which classes you’ve taken. So to write about your coursework and what you learned is redundant. Excite them with things from outside the classroom, or maybe something specific about a particular class, like research, that helped you develop skills they find valuable.

@syrianxo thanks! thats really helpful information

@hopangman no worries. Furthermore, try to focus it on a common theme of your majors. For me, I’m applying for molecular bio at berks but neurobiology, physiology, pharmaceutical at other campuses so I focused on biological sciences in general in the essay. Good luck to you!

My stats:
Major: Business Administration
GPA: 4.0. Honors List
Major GPA: 4.0
IGETC: Will be done spring 2018
7 Course Breadth: Will be done Spring 2018
Pre-reqs: Only macroeconomics left which will be done this coming semester (Fall 2017). So I’ll apply to haas having completed all of my pre-reqs!
I’m trilingual!
ECs: Investment Club member, AGS (honors society) member, Tutor for Calculus 2 and below, led math jam workshops for a whole week( A program that helps students do better on their placement tests to jump or prepare for a certain math class), interned at a financial services company during tax season while taking 17 units, Working on volunteer hours (should have 50+ by the time I apply), was amongst the 100/700 total applicants that got selected for the UC Berkeley summer experience program 2017, Tutored free of charge 2 hours a week for a whole semester.

I saw a better potential for displaying leadership as tutor rather than being a treasure of a club so that’s why i have a lot of tutoring experience

PIQs: I’m writing about how I’ve lived in 3 different countries around the world. I’ve been in cali for almost 4 yrs. How I was once in special ed for all of my core classes. How I had the language and cultural barrier and how I overcame it. How I looked after my families financial issues during my teenage years. How my biggest talent is my versatility…

Wdya think? Getting into haas will be my biggest ever victory especially after all the negativity and underestimation that I’ve faced. I just hope I’m unique b/c even if they say that “GPA is 50%” it really isn’t hahaha!

@syrianxo Heeyyyy I went to BSE 2017 too! Wdy think about the program? I absolutely loved that weekend

Since we’re at it already we might as well begin the tradition…CHANCE ME! XD

@Ak1097 I think you got me confused for @hopangman

Honestly, your stats look great. Just maintain your GPA, finish your classes and make sure you triple quadruple and quintuple check your application and PIQ before submission. I’m not too familiar with Haas, so I would want the opinion of another person. Perhaps start your own chance me thread. I’m sure someone more familiar will give you a good idea of where you stand.

@syrianxo oh shoot I did haha!

Yeah I went to BSE with @hopangman and we started our PIQs there. I’m not gonna submit them until mid Nov so plenty of time to make sure both that and the app over all is ideal.

Hmm yeah definitely a good idea to start a thread for Haas. Please feel free to post ur stats! I’d love to see where you stand.

I’m a one year transfer, literally just graduated high school, took 12 credits over the summer, taking 19 this fall, and 22 in the spring. I’m a poli sci major. I work two part time jobs, Starbucks in the morning, and tutor at Kumon Fridays and Saturdays. I don’t have any other ECs, any suggestions or advice would be great. I have enough AP credit from high school to cover the 60 credits. Half White/ half Middle Eastern. Any advice would be great, thank you!

@hailey5799 I think you should try and join an organization such as the associated students because it will highlight your interest in that area.

@hailey5799 For starters, how familiar are you with the UC admissions process? Do you have any specific questions?

If you haven’t done so yet, familiarize yourself with assist.org (as a reminder, AP doesn’t cover the prerequisites for our major - and we can’t duplicate credits) and review how UC admits transfer students. See this link: http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/counselors/transfer/comprehensive-review/index.html

Familiarize yourself with Berkeley’s resources for transfer students. Transfer Student Services offers drop-in advising for the UC application and PIQs. The Starting Point Mentorship Program (http://transfers.berkeley.edu/startingpoint/) connects applicants to UCB transfers, offering guidance and access to campus resources, classes, and tours. Check if your campus has a designated UCB representative, and contact them! Also, check if you qualify for UCB’s Transfer Alliance Program (http://cep.berkeley.edu/transfer-alliance-project-tap).

You also need to explain why you want to major in poli sci and demonstrate how well-prepared you are (think course preparation, outside experience). No “wrong” way to do this. I second joining associated students and other student organizations/programs (TRiO, EOPs, etc. if offered) on campus, if you can.

@kookachim How does the Mentorship Program and the TAP work? I though TAP was just applying outside of TAG?
I’ve asked my counselors for help but they’re useless. I’ve already looked at Assist.org, I will have all my pre-reqs for my major and my entire IGETC done by the time I transfer. How do you qualify for TAP? I already made a TAP account, am I missing something? The thing is I’m applying this November so I’m scrambling what to add to my app besides grades and jobs bc I’ve literally been in college less than two semesters when I apply.
Thank you in advance!

@hailey5799

You have to apply for the Starting Point Mentorship Program through their website. If accepted, you’ll be connected to a UCB student/transfer. They’ll serve as your mentor and offer guidance during the app process. When I was accepted in the spring, they connected me to a fellow Political Science major who transferred from a CCC. She answered any questions I had and offered to give me a campus tour/the opportunity to sit in on one of her classes. The deadline to apply for the fall semester is mid-September - or until all spaces are taken.

To clarify, the Transfer Admission Planner (TAP), UCLA TAP, and the UCB Transfer Alliance Project (TAP) are completely different. UCB TAP is targeted for a specific demographic, available at select CCCs, and, if I’m getting this right, invite-only. Getting in touch with your CC’s UCB rep (if your campus has one) is a good way to see for sure if you qualify. On my campus, only a few students got in and they were all in touch with our rep.
